About Avera McKennan Hospital (BHS) – Sioux Falls
Avera McKennan Hospital (BHS) operates from Avera Professional Plaza in Sioux Falls. The site sits in Minnehaha County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Anderson, Canton and Harrisburg. South Dakota draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Intensive outpatient and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Treatment Services at Avera McKennan Hospital (BHS)
Intensive outpatient and outpatient care run to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers. Ask what happens at the end of the program as well as the beginning, since that is where plans usually thin out. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Avera McKennan Hospital (BHS) Reviews and Ratings
A review of Avera McKennan Hospital (BHS) does not need to be long. If you were a patient or a family member, a few plain sentences on what went well, and what you wish you had known beforehand, will help the next reader.
They seem good for emergency and serious problems, but I haven't had great luck with getting help for undiagnosed or chronic conditions here. Also their parking is horrendous. Recommend allowing extra time for parking.… Seriously. Plan on arriving 20 to 25 minutes before your scheduled appointment. If you or a family member has a serious condition or something, go drive around the place ahead of time so you know exactly how to get to where you need to be.
They were really great when I had an injury, they were very supportive and helped me with my injury quick.
Very well thank you! Very respectful and courteous staff. I was very ill and needed blood they were right on top of that and before you know it I'm back on my feet. They saved my life for real no joke! Thank you Avera… McKennan Hospital from the bottom of my ❤️ I am so grateful for all you and your team had to do to save My life.
Kind, professional people!
Gave birth to my first baby here, 10 out of 10 - would recommend!
Best treatment and services in Avera mckennan hospital
The staff is really nice! Taking care of family the best way they can…. But please get your ac fixed in the rooms. Earlier when it was 90 degrees outside it was about 72 in here. Suns down, it’s cooler outside yet it’s… 79 degrees in here. The thermostat states it’s set at 68 degrees. No cold feeling whatsoever until you walk into the hallway. There is zero air flow in this room. They said there’s nothing they can do. We had to beg for a second fan. Uh yeah there’s something you can do, get it fixed? lol you want the patient to be comfortable because of the state she is in (had a stroke) yet she’s suffering in heat. Drenched in sweat.
I called and told them I was having blurred vision, been super lightheaded for weeks, and numbness in my hands and they told me to come in. I got there and they said it was a 3 hour wait! I went to 2 other clinics, 2.5… hours at one, and they other is randomly closed today. How can you just close a clinic for the day? Im better off sitting in their parking lot and dying from a stroke then getting actual help from Avera. I will now be looking out of state for other medical options. Its sad that we need to drive hours to a hospital just to get basic medical help. I really hope you guys find yourself on the wrong end of a lawsuit.
Dr's. and nursing staff have always taken wonderful care of me every appointment and stay I've had.
BEWARE DONT COME HERE FOR ANYTHING !!Mom went here and is missing thousands in jewelry. All her gold rings were stolen by someone in the hospital.
Just letting people be aware that today after an ER visit was completed we got someone else's paperwork that had all their privet information on it.
I used to love avera but after my experience in the ER I will be switching to Sanford for emergency needs. I came in with unbearable stomach pain. I brought my husband and baby with me because shes EBF. The nurse kept… taking my baby from my husband without permission and giving her back to me despite the fact I was in a terrible amount of pain. I have severe anxiety which I know for a fact is in my chart so I didnt say anything and just brushed it off. He was very offended by her treating him like he couldn't take care of his own child. I do appreciate that they addressed the issue with my daughters eye thats been ongoing. But once again I have severe anxiety and the nurse told me the infection could spread to her brain?! But I finally got a CT scan and then a different doctor came in then the one i had originally and said they didnt find anything and they were discharging me. Great because after sitting there for 5 hours in pain I honestly would've rather been sitting around in pain at home. The NURSE was the one who told me I have gallstones. Absolute joke of care.
I am currently hospitalized after having a 6 hour anterior posterior back surgery forlur days ago. My experience has been nothing short of amazing. Dr. Schwind is a highly skilled surgeon and he is an excellent… communicater and explains things in easy terms. He is personally interested in my case, sympathetic to my pain, and very anxious to get me free of pain. He has been in to see me everyday even on the weekend. All nurses who took care of me couldn't have been more caring. I get teary eyed thinking about the compassion I received from them. We had moments of tears but more moments of laughter. They are the best and not once was I treated with disrespect or unkindness. All supporting staff are wonderful from housekeeping to food services, and case workers. I would highly recommend this facility if you are looking for professionalism and a staff who truly is caring, compassionate and makes you feel you are important as an individual patient. My experience has been a very unexpected wonderful surprise inspite of the pain. Thank you, Avera McKennan for all you have done for me during my stay here. God bless all of you.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND this clinic. I was transferred last night to this hospital. There was a little confusion at check in, but the front desk peeps were apologetic. The urologist had to put a stent in my right kidney… because my kidney infections are so bad. The urologist and his team were wonderful and did a great job. I spent the night in the ER and everyone who helped me was very sweet and compassionate. I like them so much that I want this hospital to be my new primary care hospital and plan to do continued kidney care with the urologist going forward. Cannot say enough positive things about this place. Thank you guys for your help last night and glad to be feeling so much better. 🖤
Poor delivery, would not listen about epidural amount, wife couldn't feel a thing and it lasted 21 hours for no good reason. You need to feel something. Lots of people in the room as well.
Literally the worst hospital ever. Go anywhere but here. Sanford has never treated me the way they have.
Everyone from the Dr's to the janitors we're so so helpful. God bless each and every single one of them.
You guys need to reevaluate your nurses in your ortho wing. Having people wait hours for their meds after already being 2 hours late and having to call them for it. And if you call and complain and let someone know they… treat you worse. Absolutely disgusting. If you don’t want to do the work and help patients don’t be in the medical field. This hospital needs to do better or get shut down!!
My mom had surgery Friday morning. My parents and I are really impressed with the staff and volunteers at Avera. We are so glad we made the two hour drive to have surgery with Dr. Jameson at Avera. Such wonderful caring… people! Thank you!
We received the expert and gracious assistance from Mr. Andrew Brown, Supervisor, Environnental Services while trying to find the admitting desk for my wife's treatment. He was very knowledgeable and professional in his… guidance as he walked is through the facility to the admitting desk.
My late husband was brought here Sept 2025 and and our daughter in law and I where instructed to go to a homeless shelter late at night because we had no where else to go, so glad we moved to Sanford that at lease help… people that have no money or no where to go in an emergency!! Avera Mckennan could learn a lot from Sanford!!
--- I want to share my experience at the hospital last night because I felt deeply let down and worried about my health. I went to the ER with very high blood sugar levels and told the staff that my insulin sets weren’t… working properly. I also explained that I hadn’t been able to eat and was feeling unsafe to be alone or take care of myself. Despite this, I was told I had only 15 minutes to leave, or security would escort me out. This made me feel scared and abandoned. I was reassured by the hospital staff that my insulin set was working and was advised not to give any additional shots after leaving. They told me to fix the problem in the morning and have someone check on me then. I called the on-call nurse for advice that night because my blood sugar was still dangerously high, over 300, even though I hadn’t eaten anything since leaving. Unfortunately, the nurse was not helpful and ended the call abruptly after speaking to my doctor. I have been trying to manage my blood sugars on my own for the past two weeks, but despite my efforts, they have been out of control. I am now experiencing worrying symptoms like tingling and coldness in my legs and feet, which makes me afraid of permanent nerve damage. I expressed to the hospital staff that I felt like my life was at risk, even saying I didn’t want to live if things didn’t get better, but I was still sent home without proper support. The lack of care and empathy I received has made everything worse. I don’t feel like anyone listened to my concerns or understood how serious my condition is. Being sent home without proper treatment or a plan has left me feeling helpless and scared for my health. I am writing this review in the hope that the hospital will improve how they handle patients with complex conditions like mine and provide better support in emergencies.
