Awakenings Counseling Center – Merrillville

I was told by my therapist Melody, who I had been seeing on and off for almost 2 years, that she was not trained or equipped to handle someone with borderline personality disorder. During our last session she let me… know that going forward I'd need to find a different therapist, and that no one in her office would be able to help me either. Awakenings is one of the only places I've been to that would still help people without insurance, so I guess I don't need help anymore. At the time of her ending communication, I was recovering from a major surgery that made me lose my ability to work and to walk. I am still unable to walk or work as of right now so I guess I get no help to handle that mentally. This is the 2nd time in the last few years Melody has left me hanging, in 2024 when she went on maternity leave she ghosted me and I had no contact until I reached out in June of 2025 during a mental breakdown. March 24th of 2026 is when she decided she can't help me anymore. I'm not sure how mentally messed up of a person you have to be in order for a therapist to tell you not only can she not help you, but no one in her team can either. This has tainted therapy for me, I will not be continuing anymore, which is a shame because I need to heal from a lot of things. Her as a therapist overall I give her 4 stars, but being discarded? I wish I could give her 0. Maybe I wasn't making as much progress as her other clients, maybe she had too much on her plate, but deciding *I* didn't make the cut or no longer deserved the help while I literally fought for my life, is a pain I can't describe. Thanks for everything.

I've been seeing Melody at Awakenings for years now and I can't say enough good things. I have done both in person and virtual sessions, but have moved to mostly virtual sessions. She has seamlessly adjusted our… sessions based on the needs of my life and it usually feels like getting great advice from a trusted friend rather than getting preached at by a clinician. I've never had any billing or insurance issues, I've never had any scheduling issues... I just really love and feel so safe and welcome at this practice. They're even great at getting you in quickly for an urgent session when life throws you curveballs. I recommend them to everyone who I know who's seeking out counseling!

Melody is one of the therapists at Awakenings and she is amazing. She has really helped me overcome my flying anxiety and overall anxious tendencies and mindset. I highly recommend her and this counseling center.

Melody is a lifesaver, and I am so glad to be her client. She helps tremendously with my anxiety, depression, and history of trauma by restructuring my thought patterns and giving successful grounding techniques.

If I could give a zero I would. First time here so I decided to come early. No one in the front to greet you. I’m saying hello, hello hello until one person decides to come out. She wasn’t very welcoming at all. I guess… I interrupted her session because I was early. I asked her was it paperwork or something that I needed to fill out she kind of chuckled and said no. I walked out and said I won’t be back.

The billing department is a joke. I highly DO NOT recommend going here unless you want to be sued for extra visits that never even existed.

Went to this place about 2 years ago. They said they took my insurance when in fact, they did not. I now owe them a bunch of money. MAKE SURE they take your specific insurance before you go here. Cus they will say yes I… suspect even if they do not

This place is very helpful in my sobriety. I look forward to going to Awakenings twice a week. Wish I could go more.
