My partner was suffering from self-harm tendencies, so we were referred to Gateway. Immediately upon entering the facility we were forced to deal with the lackadaisical and just overall rude receptionists. This caused… my partner to feel uneasy, which led to her feeling even more scared about getting help. This kind of behavior is unacceptable for a mental health hospital. If you don’t like your job then don’t work at a mental health hospital where you need to actually CARE about your job. Other than the receptionist ladies, the physician and on-site therapist my partner talked to were wonderful.

A friend was having a mental health crisis: panic attacks, depression, etc. Was referred to Gateway by the hospital ER after being released. They didn't have a regular counselor/ therapist and we all know how long it… can take to get in to see someone. So it seemed like a good idea to them. First of all, they only do outpatient care from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. but this doesn't seem to be listed anywhere. So when they showed up to see if they could see a counselor they were greeted by a security person who offered that they could sign themselves in as an Inpatient! Like, what!?! Crazy... And if you're not aware, here's why. The history of medical professionals taking advantage of minority communities, especially people of color and non-conforming queer people, creates a fear and suspicion of what can happen to these people in these settings. I would not be surprised if people didn't return for help after that initial experience. Creating a fear of being locked up just because you need to talk to a counselor about how stressful your life is! Surprisingly, they went back the next morning at 7:00 a.m. to see a counselor. The outpatient paperwork they were given also had some verbiage about being admitted, even though it was outpatient paperwork about missing scheduled appointments, so that also seemed weird to them... Again, not really creating a safe space for a vulnerable person in a moment of crisis. After sitting in the waiting room for an hour they were told that Gateway does not take their insurance. So it would be $145.00 to see someone. They were allowed to leave, thank God. But the whole experience made it obvious that this is not the place to get help if you need it. If you are looking for help, good luck, and maybe look into programs that the city of Savannah offers through the health department? 🤷🏻‍♂️☹️❤️

EXTREMELY long waiting time to see anyone doctor related. Even if you get there at 7am on the dot, you will still sit for hours. They don’t start calling people back until 8 & even then you will be sitting for another… hour if they don’t call you back before 9. So twos waiting room time guaranteed.

I took my mom tonight and yes it was late but they are 24 hours and she has no sense of time and takes forever to ever leave the house. It has taken me forever to get her to agree to come and I told the man what was… going on but since they are short staffed he said she would have to come in the morning. (There was also Alan that came from Illinois sitting out front waiting to go inside in the morning) We live 45 minutes away and she changes her mind each day so I was afraid if I went home she wouldn’t agree to come tomorrow so I took her to memorial hospital but then she wouldn’t get out of the car. Now I have to worry about getting her there tomorrow and if she won’t go I’ll have to resort to getting an order from the court and calling the police.

Made you wait for almost two hours. They took everyone else before me. My appointment was at 7:45 and doctor didn’t see me till 9:45. absolutely ridiculous do not come unless I’m have all day. 1 star is absolutely… ridiculous they deserve negative 5

Honestly. I wish i had something good to say about gateway, but i don’t. One star is already too much. They don’t recall the appointments THEY made for you. Will have you driving back and forth to their facilities,… wasting time, money, and gas. I wish i could get my prescription elsewhere. And did I mention the terrible customer service? 0/100 stars.

My experience with Gateway was as a private citizen trying to be a Good Samaritan to a person who needed assistance who was in crisis. Gateway was the logical place to call because their name echoes in our community. I… placed a phone call to their crisis center very late on a Saturday night and found their posted hours of 24/7 to be absolutely true! The nurse we spoke with was kind and responsible and encouraging. The person that I called for ended up not going to Gateway but that does not take away the fact that a competent service was ready and available to a person in need. I commend the Gateway staff who must really face some troubling things yet continue to show up for their employer and this community. Thank you Gateway Crisis Center
