About Girard Medical Center – Girard
Girard Medical Center operates from 302 North Hospital Drive in Girard. The site sits in Crawford County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Columbus, Fort Scott and Parsons. Kansas draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Hospital inpatient care is delivered here, alongside telehealth appointments. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves. Care offered spans more than one level, which means someone can move between them without changing provider.

Treatment Services at Girard Medical Center
Hospital inpatient care runs to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Ask what happens at the end of the program as well as the beginning, since that is where plans usually thin out. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Girard Medical Center Reviews and Ratings
What patients and their families say about Girard Medical Center sits alongside the licensing and accreditation detail on this page. Reading the two together gives a fuller picture of this Girard program than either gives alone.
I've been holding onto this story and finally feel brave enough to share publicly. My mother was brought into the ER July 2025 where my brother and I took alternating shifts to be with her. I was told she was being… transferred to comfort care. My brother and I are in our early 30s and my mother was 60. While we knew our mother wasn't well, we were not aware of the full extent of her health problems. It's hard to hear anyone will be needing hospice but especially for 2 young adults who are supposed to be the patient's advocate. Her condition was not explained well to us and my neurodivergent brother had a hard time accepting. At one point, Simon from the ER came in to explain all of the tests he ran. He was extremely impatient with us but while he was there, a nurse came in to check her catheter. He snapped at the nurse to tell her my mom does not have a catheter because she is vaginally bleeding. The nurse continues to check her perineal area and he says "You're braver than I am." Later, when we ended up going to Mercy in Pittsburg, the staff had no issues putting a catheter in her so that my mom wasn't constantly in soiled briefs. Mindi Gardner ended up being my mom's doctor in comfort care. While my mom was in her comfort care room, we invited family to see her. 8 of us total for a few hours and we gathered around to pray for my mom. The next day, my mom is kicked out before we were able to speak to a social worker to transition her to a long term health facility. I am told to take my dying, immobile mother to her primary doctor. I also find out we were kicked out because we had 12 people in the ER and were performing a SEANCE. The only time we had visitors was in her comfort care room where you are allowed visitors! And it shocks me in this extremely Christian community that a doctor would have an issue with a family praying over a loved one. My mom ends up dying maybe 36 hours after all this and it was anything but peaceful thanks to this hospital. I drove my mom to her primary, to a nursing home, ambulanced her to Mercy, ambulanced her back to the nursing home. I am giving it the 2 star rating because if you need labs, you'll have a good time, and a lady from the kitchens is a golden gem of a person. My daughter's primary physician is Dr. Bonzo in Frontenac and we love him. GMC is lucky to have Kay Quick as well. She did my first pap when she was at Freeman and successfully distracted me from the very uncomfortable procedure.
Surgery went great, the staff and nurses were incredible. Unlike Mercy in Pitt, they actually gave better meds other than ibuprofen and tylenol for this surgery. Thank you so much!
This hospital has the absolute rudest staff in their emergency room. Every time I have ever come up to be seen they are so rude I want to leave. One time I came to this hospital with my 4 month old baby because he was… having rib retractions while he had walking pneumonia and without even being seen they told us our son was not having rib retractions and to not waste their time. We then went to via Christi and the situation was taken very seriously and we were seen right away. The staff at via Christi was appalled we had been treated that was here. I filed multiple complaints and no one EVER called me back. Never go to Girard hospital.
They over charge on blood work and are not able to work with people
Wife had a procedure recently. Great experience for us from entry to exit. Nice people there.
This poor excuse of a doctor just basically buried my mother! My mother has been going to her for years and for the last year, she straight lied to my mother about possible cancer, saying she is ok and there is no… reason she needs to worry instead of just making sure. My mother tried to get Salvador to refer her to a doctor who can help diagnosed her if she has anything. Only NOW she passed her on to a doctor WHO FOUND THAT SHE HAS STAGED 4 CERVICAL CANCER! She had it for almost a YEAR! This woman needs to be dealt with by attorneys and her license revoked and all patients need to beware!
They listen to me
Do not come here if you need medical assistance in any way. I was sent here by poison control due to a possible ingestion of hair thinner. The staff was nice up to the point I told them that I have suffer from… Borderline Personality Disorder, they then switched to where I get my pills from, interrupting me and being very rude. When the doctor came in he walked in a looked at me said rudely “what did you do to your hair?” Again focusing on mental health and pills asked me if I told anyone where I went to the hospital for my mental health ? I did told staff twice. He then looked at me and gave me a weird look and asked me who my bf was, I told him that’s my bf. He then looked me over and he touched my hair and seeing that I still had product in my hair he touched and then sled me why I have coconut oil in my hair and wiped the product on the pillow next to my face. They didn’t asked any question about any existing health conditions and seeing I have pre diabetics and hypothyroidism if this is unchecked it could be dangerous. I will never go back there.
Continued struggles in reaching the billing department. Frustrating.
Could not recommend anyone to come here. I was seen for a work comp issue and though the receptionist was nice, the NP automatically dismissed my concerns of a possible concussion since I did not lose consciousness and… could recall what occurred. He was demeaning and rude in his responses with me, and when I was genuinely confused about some activity he was trying to do (touch my finger, touch your nose), he stopped and responded "seriously?" as though it was my fault that I didn't understand. I waited over an hour for him to come in and automatically judge me right away, not even looking at my injury site or at my eyes. No scans were done. It was a waste of time. Now, almost a month later, I recognize that they billed my personal insurance instead of work comp as it was told. I now have to communicate and get it fixed, which is unnecessary, if they just did it right the first time. I also don't feel that I should be paying the amount that was billed for such poor service.
Had surgery and an overnight stay. Each person, from the front desk, hospitality, labs, anesthetist, recovery room, food service, and floor nurse were helpful, kind, and good at their job. Being in contact with records… and billing has also been a good experience. I would not hesitate to return if I needed to.
Everyone here hates their job. None of them are happy & they all act like they don’t want to help you or anyone around you. Every time I come here they act like they’re better than everyone & they are always rude.… Horrible customer service. I was trying to leave a number for my unstable aunt and they pretty much told me to leave it with her when she’ll lose it & I was try to explain that but they shut the door on my face.
I had a terrible experience at Girard after a fall on ice. Most of the nurses were wonderful but it only takes one really bad Doctor, nurse, or assistant to make the experience bad. My surgery had to be done over and I… did 6 weeks of rehab on a still broken leg. Dr, Yost "tried" to repair my comminuted fracture with a rod and 9 brads instead of replacement. As an x-ray tech I thought this was a mistake...He and staff at Girard (Jody an RN who should lose her license), thought I was faking not being able to walk. Wouldn't even refer me to inpatient rehab. NEVER RE X-RAYED MY FEMUR!!!! I had minimal inadequate PT at Girard hospital. Mercy Home health refused to treat me and said I should have never been sent home. Could not ambulate at all..After 3 weeks later at a rehab center it was discovered his repair totally failed and bones collapsed with femur poking into my sacrum.... Had to have total hip replacement with reinforcement where brads were placed weakening my femur. Total non union repair. Dr. in KC could not understand how I tolerated the pain that long. I had told Dr. Yost many times about pain in my sacrum...STILL NO RE-X-RAY....JUST HORRIBLE...GIRARD HOSPITAL....JODY THE CHARGE NURSE AND DR. YOST....TOOK ME OVER 1 YEAR TO RECOVER FROM THEIR HORRIBLE NEGLECT and LACK OF FOLLOW UP CARE...
My mom was in the behavioral unit of this facility and was yelled at up in the face from these nurses and med doctors that were there to help get her meds straightened out and not only that she was on the phone with my… father and he heard them yelling at her she has early onset dementia and this is the one of care her money paid she is not the only one this happened to either.
I’ve always had positive experiences at this hospital. Of the options in my area, Girard Medical will always be my first choice for myself and loved ones.
I'm not sure when Kevin went but I'm sure it wasn't to the E.R. in the middle of the night. Don't expect to see actual doctors here. You'll be lucky to land a N.P. Also, the higher up the person is you see, the more… rudely you'll be treated, on average. Also, Medicare fraud is practiced here...just FYI...
Excellent care and great people!
