About Higher Ground Papa Taumata

A charitable trust in Te Atatū Peninsula, West Auckland, Higher Ground Papa Taumata has run a live-in recovery programme for people with severe alcohol and other drug addiction since 1984. It is overseen by a board of trustees and funded mainly through Health New Zealand contracts.

The main adult programme lasts 18 weeks; a separate 24-week programme, Te Whare Taonga, is for pregnant women and new mothers, who can stay with one baby up to three years old. Continuing-care groups and counselling support people before and after the live-in stay. Residents aged 18 and over come from Auckland and Waikato, and most people refer themselves.

The live-in programme runs for 18 weeks, which makes it long-term residential care, and Te Whare Taonga extends to 24 weeks for pregnant women and new mothers, who can keep one baby with them up to the age of three. Continuing-care groups and counselling support people before and after the stay. Alcohol, stimulants and methamphetamine are the recorded focus, and screening comes first.

The therapeutic community is built on twelve-step recovery principles alongside evidence-based therapy, with group, individual and family counselling, addiction counselling, self-help meetings and alumni continuing care. Tikanga Māori runs through daily life, including te reo, karakia, kapa haka and waiata, and whānau join evening groups and weekend visits. Approaches vary by programme and clinician.

How Much Does Treatment at Higher Ground Papa Taumata Cost?

The trust is funded through Health New Zealand contracts, and most residents qualify for a Work and Income benefit, part of which is paid directly towards living costs. People who are not eligible for a benefit are charged NZD 250 a week, the trust’s own published figure and a subsidised contribution rather than a private rate. New Zealand publishes no country range for residential care; free public and NGO treatment is what is published at this level.

Raise money early with the admissions team: ask what the weekly amount covers, whether medical appointments and medication sit outside it, and what applies if a stay runs past 18 or 24 weeks.

Higher Ground Papa Taumata Reviews

Higher Ground has a Google Business Profile rated close to five stars across dozens of reviews, accumulated over many years rather than in a single burst. For a residential service in New Zealand, that is a substantial public record, though it still describes feelings rather than outcomes.

Whether the service holds current certification, the make-up of its clinical and counselling team, and the length of the programme are the harder facts. Ask what the aftercare and whānau support look like once the residential stay ends.

Tena koutou katoa, ko Stacee-Jaye ahau he tangata taru kino me inu waipiro kaiwarawara ahau. He paetahi nui ahau o Te Papa Taumata. I came into Papa Taumata with an aspiration to work the programme and I had reserved… motives of doing it my way, I realised it got lonely for me at the point after I was flying under the radar, holding negative power in the house, not holding my peers accountable, and behaving as if anti-social behaviour wasn't going to have an impact in all aspects of my recovery. It was a timely experience learning new ways to do everything all over again literally from scratch, I took risks I never thought would be hard to manage with control issues, vulnerability, boundaries, relationships in general, trust, and honesty. By the time I graduated I had being dreading my last month leading up to the end of it, fear of discharge, fear of failure. I'm grateful to all the staff of Papa Taumata for their forceful efforts that have changed my behaviour and attitude towards a different life moving forward. Nga mihi Stacee-Jaye.
