Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center – Indianapolis (5610 Crawfordsville Road) Detox and Rehab Services

The register shows Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center – Indianapolis (5610 Crawfordsville Road) providing intensive outpatient and outpatient care. Sessions follow a set timetable while people keep living at home. Anyone unsure which level fits should ask for an assessment rather than choosing from a list, since placement criteria exist precisely to make that judgement.

Both conditions are treated in parallel, which is what the research supports. It is worth asking how many hours a week the program runs, because that decides whether it fits around everything else.

Okay here we go...the state help/funded anything can be hard to navigate and down right trying at times! BUT, the office people are nice/patient with you if you are also. The therapists are knowledgeable/hardworking but… if you are not a forthcoming/active person in your own journey/recovery then how are they supposed to know how to help. These people see LOTZ of different mental health afflictions and a wide range of severity. So, if the therapist is not working for you, then you have a wide range of other "available" therapist/groups you can choose from!

I dont leave alot of reviews.. However, i feel obligated to share my first experience with Eskenazi. All other medical care has been from the Community South. Called to schedule an appt for evaluation and was informed… the intake process is only as walk ins and condcuted between 9am - 12pm m-f. After I was assured if I'm there by 12pm I would be seen, I left work early to come in. Once my ID and insurance was ran I was directed to try again tomorrow as they didn't have anymore open slots for an intake. The receptionist reccomened to show up between 8am - 8:30am to have the best chance at getting an evaluation. Listen to the other reviews. Go somewhere else if you can.

I have been going here for a little over a year now. Overall, my therapist Edna and my Doctor, Dr. Matthewson, have been great. I give my team 5 stars that have been helping me through my mental health battle.

I had an incredibly rewarding experience with Dr. Butler and Leah Pyle, LCSW. You could tell they really had a heart for what they are doing and care about their patients as a human and not just a number. I have had a… long road with my mental health journey, seeing the entire spectrum of clinical expertise for nearly two years. Countless therapists, NPs, MDs, diagnoses - you name it - I saw them all. When I was still struggling after multiple different interventions, my PCP made a referral to Eskenazi which is close to where I live. I met with a therapist for a few visits and then found my FAVORITE Dr of all time, Dr. Butler. It was a tough road but that's because mental health is - and Dr. Butler really reviewed my history and made new recommendations. She took a comprehensive approach to my mental health and really made me feel like I could trust her and that she cared. We only had to do a couple of different med changes and I feel like a completely new person. I attribute this to her clinical competency and compassion for her patients. Managing and improving mental health does NOT happen in one visit. It is a process, but trust the process!

Tonya Butler, DNP approached me at the front desk when I was going to pick up my short term disability extension form on Jan 30th and told me to sit down and wait... When I was picking up documentation for my son at the… window as well. Provider held my short term disability form hostage for 16 days, knowing I need it to get my income. Provider denies getting my phone call on Jan 23rd asking for my paperwork, when there is a telehealth visit in portal asking for my documents. Sent provider a portal message on Jan 27th asking her to call me to fill out patient report section of my paperwork and to advise I wasn't ready to return to work due to mental health and PTSD symptoms. Provider lead me back to her office with no explanation or appt scheduled only to have her male manager waiting inside as she verbally attacked me and accused me of not needing to stay home from work, when she also said I wasn't making "any progress" with my therapist. When I advocated for myself she interrupted and silenced me. Manager said I need IOP therapy elsewhere, but my therapist offered CPT 2 times a week. I was told I can no longer see my counselor 2 times a week, and they need to see progress on my screening scales. What the heck? So they can see I am in crisis, and yet DNP Butler changes my whole short term disability application to not only undermine the therapist who recommended I be off work, but she contradicts her own assessment that I need more intensive therapy than they can offer me. Even tho they get $600 from my insurance for each therapy session, bc they charge a $400 dollar facility fee on top of the $200 therapy session charge. My therapist and my son's are amazing, but this system is toxic and bullying with medical providers that revictimize the vulnerable by using their power over them, which NP Butler described as a power struggle... When I told her it is only her that has the power, so i refuse to ever schedule with her again. I am trained as a recent APRN graduate and she doesn't practice patient centered or collaborative care, nor even listen or believe a patient. She even accused me of taking her time and my therapists time, when the manager had to call her in to the "ambush" meeting and have my counselor express her view that I should stay home from work due to my crisis situation and symptoms. The escalation was caused by NP Butler and no one else, as well as involving everyone and taking everyone's time. NP Butler didn't believe me when I told her one medication caused me to gain weight and didn't warn me of any of the side effects of the med she prescribed, including low blood sodium levels. I requested my short term disability paperwork to be filled out by my therapist, and the NP said she had to fill it out bc she was the medical provider and the paperwork was rejected by the company for being incomplete and incongruent to the original application filled out by my therapist. She even had my wrong job title on it. She sent it in against my request saying I should just go back to work with no explanation, and the paperwork didn't reflect any of the therapists evaluation of me. Avoid her at all costs as she shouldn't be practicing medicine, let alone treating patients with trauma. She has some personal vendetta vs patients who are on short term disability and get financial support, bc there is no logical reason for her to come after my benefits like that.

I found the front desk or receptionist very nice and knowledgeable but the way it is set up is very unproductive. It maybe that they try to weed out those who are not serious about treatment or appointments but this is… not the way to go. My doctor just needs me to do one thing and she can do the rest. But when it a first come first serve bases and you have to come a hour before opening and available spots are limited, like some food rationing line, you can't get things done. It's really sad!

I've had probably about six or so Zoom appointments with Leslie Pell, and if she is employed here afterall, please do yourself a favor and avoid this person. She may act professional with her smile but that doesn't mean… she listens well. I've had psychiatric care for the last 15 years and this person is robotic and seems to only know textbook material. And I say she seems to only have textbook knowledge because she will repeat herself as if reading from a script. She is not interested in the patient and it's very clear she lacks experience. With my previous doctors I've been able to pick up from where we left off. Not with this person. Seems like a common issue at this location.

A great place for help overall, receptionist ladies are super nice and understanding. You do need to have at least 2-3 therapist appointments at the clinic before you can see a psychiatrist, but wasn’t an issue for me.… Dr. James T is a wonderful therapist and has helped me tremendously with my anxiety disorder and my depression. I’m always given resources for additional help after every session. Everyone’s needs are different with therapy and psychiatrist help, but I’ve been helped a lot here and highly recommend it.

Everyone rates their therapy experiences low because their individual needs are not immediately met. It is up to Us to heal ourselves. They are there to provide support, advice, proper medication, and coping mechanisms.… Ik it can be frustrating, but they do the best they can. The office is amazingly friendly. Dr. Mathewson is very down-to-earth and real. The therapists are hit-or-miss. Some are 20 years younger than me and literally read stuff off a computer screen. I requested and older, more experienced therapist and it's been much better. Would love to get into some TMS therapy soon.

Double charges for appointments! You get billed by the physician and the hospital!!! I even called the billing department prior to my first visit to check on prices. They only quoted the charge for therapy, completely… left out the obscene hospital facility fee of $350 per visit. I didn't even go to the hospital for care.

★☆☆☆☆
Kathi Hoffmeister5 years ago

I went to see Dr. Mathewson a few days after I had visited a hospital when I was very upset and suicidal. I was really upset and crying in her office. She is aware of the things that I have been going through that last… several months. She proceeded to tell me that “every time I come to her office all I do is cry,” that “I was just feeling sorry for myself,” and that “other people have it much worse than I do.” I was stunned. I felt so dismissed and unimportant. Please request another psychiatrist if you come here. I hope nobody ever has to endure this kind of treatment from her again.

Therapist office was right outside the waiting room where I could hear the waiting patients and I’m sure my private convos could be heard to some degree (no white noise machine was on). I was charged ~$70 for speaking… with someone then later charged the EXACT same amount for a facility charge. I have to pay $140 to work on not killing my self. I’m not supporting this business and hope you consider looking else where. SHAME

I’d give 0 stars if possible. Therapist consistently showed up 20 minutes late to my appointments even though it was the first appointment of the day, and getting messages through to the therapist or psychiatrist is a… nightmare. Tried to get an emergency message through about my meds not working and being in crisis on Thursday afternoon. Today is Wednesday and have heard nothing at all. If I had waited for a call back instead of going to the hospital over the weekend things could have been pretty bad. Switching to Centerstone asap.

Schedule me with an out of network PA without telling me. Then said it was my responsibility to find out if the PA was in network even though I had been seeing a NP regularly there at the clinic that was in network. The… staff was very rude in explaining. Will not recommend Eskenazi Health for a place of service.

Dr. Fretwell is amazing. Therapists are hit or miss.... Been through 4 in 8 months because they keep quitting.... None read your chart ahead of time...it's so frustrating... Have had 1 appointment with a therapist that… wasn't an introduction meeting.... Unfortunately, with my insurance I can't go anywhere else. So, my medications are right thanks to the brilliant genius of Dr. Fretwell, but I've had no therapy whatsoever. None. Completely incompetent in the therapy department. The front desk ladies are absolutely fabulous

Doctors don't look at your charts... They just assume they remember. They'll prescribe you the wrong dosage of medication. I know this as, like I said, IT'S IN MY CHART. Radnovich is the worst of all. Routinely arrives… hours late for appointments, and doesn't listen to you. He just sits there and rambles off book knowledge which helps no one. So if you like sitting in the waiting area for hours on end (you have nothing better to do like work, right?), then by all means go for it. Too bad it's the only mental health place that accepts my insurance. Otherwise, I'd avoid this place like the plague
