I said this time and time before again the psychiatric unit for children and young adults sucks. They don’t care about doing their jobs.
This has been one of the WORST experiences I have ever had with a psychiatry clinic. I honestly would not recommend this clinic to anyone seeking consistent and dependable psychiatric care. My biggest concern is the… lack of CONTINUITY OF CARE. It feels like I am constantly seeing a different provider or graduate/resident student instead of having one consistent psychiatric provider who actually knows my history, medications, and previous reactions. What made my experience even worse was having a BAD REACTION to a medication that I was prescribed through this clinic. I was already having a very difficult day because of the reaction, and instead of feeling like I received the support and guidance I needed from the clinic managing my medication, I was given a piece of paper with phone numbers to call. That was extremely upsetting. When a patient is struggling after starting a medication prescribed by a psychiatric clinic, they should feel like their concerns are being HEARD, TAKEN SERIOUSLY, and appropriately addressed. As a UAB employee, this experience was especially disappointing. I expected better communication, consistency, and support from a healthcare system that I work for and once trusted with my own care. Patients seeking mental health treatment are already dealing with enough. They should not have to wonder who they will see next, repeatedly explain their history to someone new, or feel unsupported when they experience problems or symptoms with a medication. I am extremely disappointed with the care and communication I received.
Family Atmosphere
Had the opportunity to stay in this facility about 8 years ago… and let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed. I was scared at first but my rommies were very nice and welcoming, one even taught me how to do origami! One… of the nurses even free styled for us one night! He was great! And don’t get me STARTED on the cannolis. I’m better now, but would recommend.
This clinic is so unhelpful. The physicians are alright but the receptionists who are at the front door on the first floor are never there to open the door. So you have to go to the garage level to get to the elevator… and the clinic isn’t even in the Sparks building like they say it is. The most unhelpful and inept people ever.
DO NOT RECOMMEND NEVER GO HERE VERY MEAN STAFF!!
They didn’t give me all my stuff and gave me someone else’s stuff
Really great high accuity mental illness wards
Dr. Kipatrick lacks empathy, and some of the night nurses are very angry, especially during one-on-one sessions. Otherwise, they do care about you and try to find solutions, thanks to nurse Jordan Mili.
Was a patient here at the adolescent unit the doctor’s were fine some staff and nurses were very disrespectful.
This is not a practice that offers solutions I had a terrible experience with UAB psychiatry which is disappointing considering my other health care experiences with UAB medicine have been good. I sought help with Dr.… Clyde Mclane with depression and other issues I’ve been battling in my life for quite sometime and was basically told there was nothing he could do to help me and insisted medicine would not help me even though I’ve never been prescribed anything he insisted it was useless and had to be convinced by my mother to give me a prescription my experience with UAB psychiatry was terrible and I left feeling even more hopeless than I already was. I do not recommend this institution or Dr. Clyde Mclane for your psychiatric health please seek help from another institution.
My fiance went in there I find it very very ridiculous that I had to pick him up and verify that it was me to pick him up and to okay for him to come home he had to call me from the hospital I had to let security they… had to let security know that I was there to pick him up
stayed for one week on two separate occasions on the adolescent psych ward. kind nurses, nice activities, and good food. some older nurses were rude and the dress code is a little strict. i left feeling better than i… did when i arrived!
UAB Psychiatric Center on 6th Ave S. First visit and consultation with Dr. Clyde McLane lll. Never again. It was a waste of a visit. Waste of a parking fee. 👎 He was no bit of help. Very condescending! I only changed… back to UAB because I now have better insurance to do so. Well he listened and asked many very bias questions only to say he has no advise to give me , he had no suggestions on my medications not any words towards help or a plan like most doctors do. He did not show interest in a follow-up. Just a very bad 1st impression overall. He preceived to be very judgemental to my life stories and things im experiencing.! It was obvious he was only in it for the insurance money. I noticed his was focused on and asking if I had Medicaid. Little do they know psychiatrist have some of the most weirdest strangest ways while they trying to see deeply into other people and form their own opinions. I will not be going back for sure.
I didn't have a good experience here at all. I felt like they weren't concerned one bit with my health. I don't recommend.
My sister went there terrible place do not send your children there nurses are very rude and hateful
I had a family member in the geriatric unit, and there are not enough thank you’s that I could give to our family member’s social worker, nurses, doctors, and all staff. They are extremely open to working with you as a… family, and take great care of your loved one. They show care, kindness, patience, and professionalism. The incredible progress and help that we received having our family member here could never be repaid. Should you need it, they will be a great advocate for your loved one. Thank you so much!
worst place if you cant afford good insurance....just got a phone call about my daughter...its been two years and 2 times at uab 4 times at childrens and 1 time at grandview and everytime they keep her for 5 days and… they release her saying that they cant keep her and there is no place to put her they excepts medicaid,,,understand she is an extreme self harm chils 13 years old with over 200 cutts,,,they just told me either give her to dhr and they can put her in a place witch ill lose my daughter or bring her home and one day she will probably succeed in killing herslf...she has said that sence her mother passed away she wants to die and they refuse to help other than 5 days and they let her go....im at my witts end on begging for help with my child and now i either give her up or i loose her.....a billion dollar hospital and they dont care unless you have good insurance..its all about money money money....they dont care about a child with probably the worst case of self harm in alabama
Good doctors, the parking is always a headache
Change doctor's too often. How can you build trust in your doctor if you have a different one every few months?
I went here in July stayed for 2 weeks. I feel this is one of the better psych wards. Most of the nurses were nice beside one nurse Kristian. She was very rude and inconsiderate to people's emotions. Why work at a… psychward of your gonna be mad when people cry or are upset? They also went through are stuff with no warning one girl even said her panties were on the floor. I met good people in there but I would not recommend being friends once you get out because it can be very toxic. The food was good but they got our order wrong a lot and sometimes they wouldn't even get our food and we would have to wait hours to eventually get it. Also I feel there was some favoritism to certain patients because one person can get away with having there mask down, drinking in the common room, or even dating in the hostpital, which is crazy to me. The doctors are pretty nice but they seemed in a hurry to get me out of there even though I didn't feel totally good about going home. They did change my medicine and it has helped. The social workers are super nice! the groups were fun and gym was great too. I liked how we were out of our rooms most the time socializing or playing games. Overall it was a pretty chill place.
Well my 27 year old daughter was here, and yesterday they told her she was going to go home and be checked out, and to call for a ride. So she calls me and after my 2 hour drive to get there, they tell her that if she… wants prescriptions fir meds she needed she would have to wait and check out the following morning. She said, no not after my mom already drove out here, my second complaint is, my daughter was out of it from a concussion the first few dsys so when she called me she didn’t give me a code, to be able to call her back. And when the hospital first called me they didn’t tell me anything about needing a code to call back my daughter. So the next day i was not ablle to speak to my daughter on the phone without the “code” and no one was able to tell me how she was because of hippa violation worries so i was quite worried and wondered well what would happen if she spiralled downhill and i woukdnt know?? But thankfully she did call me the day after that.
i am 14 for reference i went to uab for attempting suicide and was there for 10 days. the actual hospital once i was admitted was nice, the staff are genuinely good people and seem to care. some staff are rude and… inconsiderate but that’s to be expected and happens everywhere. it’s my second time being there and i will say it has helped me a lot. especially with coping and actually being safe enough to go home and not end my life. the only complaint i have is that you have to go through the er to be able to be admitted to any psychiatric ward and i waited for 4 days in the er waiting for a bed. it was a pain. when i got a bed in the ward it was like a sigh of relief but it made my stay feel so much longer and it made me extremely home sick.
My spouse was admitted here despite being discharged by a doctor already, and then held until an entirely different doctor could evaluate and discharge her. Horrible miscommunication that led to my wife being unable to… come home and go back to work.
The business office, specifically the billing office, will send you straight to collections even though your account is still being adjusted by your health insurer (which UAB provides to their students) and by the time… you pay the account and ask that it be removed from the record considering the whole process was done incorrectly, they get upset because you are not to question their poor communication with the outside vendors they hired to harass you.
The place is overall okay. My experience was decent. The food is good, and the rooming is pretty clean. The staff on the other hand wasn’t so nice. A lot of times they were demanding towards the psych patients and rude… to us for no reason.
