About Veterans Affairs Medical Center – Albuquerque

Veterans Affairs Medical Center operates from 1501 San Pedro Street SE in Albuquerque. The site sits in Bernalillo County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Carnuel, Kirtland AFB and South Valley. Distance matters here, and the nearest option is not always the one that fits.

Hospital inpatient care, detox, residential treatment, intensive outpatient and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside medication-assisted treatment, telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Detox and Rehab Services at Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Withdrawal management covers alcohol, benzodiazepine, cocaine, methamphetamine and opioid dependence and is handled on site rather than referred elsewhere. Someone starting in detox can move into residential care without changing provider or repeating an intake. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Residential runs both short and long term, so the question at intake is which length the assessment points toward. Buprenorphine and naltrexone are available and paired with counseling rather than prescribed alone. Trauma-specific services run alongside, which matters where the two are tangled together.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center Address, Location and Contact Information

The address is 1501 San Pedro Street SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, in Bernalillo County. The catchment reaches Carnuel, Kirtland AFB and South Valley. Confirm what a program covers before traveling in, since the level of care listed is not always the level with capacity.

Telehealth appointments cover some contact where travel is difficult, which removes part of the journey for people further out. Ask what a first appointment involves and how long the current wait runs before making the trip. Waiting times vary with capacity, so call ahead rather than arriving unannounced.

How Much Does Treatment at Veterans Affairs Medical Center Cost?

The typical price of rehab in New Mexico for someone paying privately is $1,540 to $4,900 for a week of medical detox, $6,000 to $25,000 a month for residential treatment, $2,500 to $9,000 a month for an intensive outpatient program and $1,200 to $5,000 a month for standard outpatient care. Prices for Veterans Affairs Medical Center were not found at the time of writing, so its actual fees could differ.

Accommodation, meals, medical monitoring, the intake assessment, group therapy and individual counseling are standard, so Veterans Affairs Medical Center most likely includes them. Other services may cost more. This is an informed guess, and the facility is the only source for its actual price.

Worst VA. Rudest employees. David Lohr Valdez and Matt Thompson we see how you treat us. Shame on you! These government employees need to be fired. Lazy.

After getting out of the Marine Corps, I settled in New Mexico and have used the VA facility for over 37 years now and let me say New Mexico truly has none of the finest medical facilities. Throughout the United States,… New Mexico has my number one. Vote for the healthcare for all veterans, and I've only been to 2 others lomelinda, California, which is always busy and always slammed for the veterans, and then there's the one on oho street in Tucson Arizona, where I was sent to go by the VA from New Mexico. For special medical treatment that the VA back then do not offer here. But they found me a facility where I could go and get my medical treatment done. That's what I call looking out for a veteran during a tough situation.

It is a government beaurocracy. You must fit the system or the system will absolutely ignore you. Seek the help of the administrators and the intake nurses and carefully follow their directions otherwise you will suffer… all kinds of frustrations. Be kind to the little folks. They will help you. The more senior folks are frustrated with the system as well and don't have that much time to assist you. So do yourself a favor and really pay attention to the junior people. Have your act together beforehand. Search the internet and know what you need and what the system can provide. That way unrealistic expectations do not frustrate them as well as you.

I never really got a chance to thank them but if not for this place, I would have died... so 5 stars lol Specific shout out to the ER, ICU, and the lady that installed my PICC line. Which, when they described to me what… that was, sounded horrifying, but alls well that ends well. Infectious Disease clinic is top notch, great docs and nurses that helped me through it.

I have traveled all over the country and visited a few VA facilities throughout my life, and I have to say that this Albuquerque campus is easily the best one I have ever seen. What truly sets this medical center apart… is the staff—these are genuinely caring people who treat you with real respect. Every single interaction I’ve had here has been outstanding. Dr. Vasi in the ENT department is exceptional, providing top-tier care and actually taking the time to listen. My experience with Erika in Physical Therapy has been equally fantastic, as she is incredibly dedicated to helping you improve. Even the staff down in the lab who draw blood are incredibly kind, patient, and caring, which turns what is usually a routine chore into a pleasant visit. The campus itself is large, but the exceptional attitude of the staff across all these different departments makes navigating your healthcare here a much better experience than at other facilities nationwide. I am deeply grateful for the high level of care and humanity shown by the team here.

Very sad that this is the service our veterans receive. From primary care to surgical this facility and their employees are a mess.

This VA is without question the Diamond in the Rough of the VA system. No matter the department or mental state that I arrive in...I have been treated with care and dignity and respect. I have been to some absolutely… midevil VA hospitals that wouldn't know what a uterus is even if you threw one at em. As a female veteran ive found VA care to be very hit and miss, but the folks here both male and female staff have always strived to accommodate me (even if I was acting crazy). They have THE best mental health care in the VA IMO. BEACON (WALK-IN emergency mental health) is an absolute blessing and every VA should have something similar. If youre a vet and want to know about your benefits and care options, ABQ is the place to go. Is it without issues? Of course not. The difference here is when they do fall short they really work to fix it or make it right. I am so grateful to them for everything over the last 6 years Ive been here.

I have been seen by the optometrist, audiologist, ENT, sleep center, and most recently the MRI section and have been amazed EVERY time with the caring, professional attitudes of ALL of the employees. In fact, the last… time I attempted an MRI at a civilian hospital, I was unable to complete it. At the VA, it was only due to Jeff's compassionate and caring manner that I was able to complete the MRI. This is the best healthcare I have ever received, bar none.

Just the best care, My primary Dr. shows me he really cares and does the best for me. I am a Vietnam Era Vet and later a civil service Fire Fighter and have been cared for my whole working life as follows, Army 2 years… and AIR FORCE APPROX 26 years also done some Fire Fighting in Los Alamos as a civil servant FF protecting the Labs and town! I am totally blessed and being helped through all my injuries which I will not list some worse than others!

I was abducted by the Albuquerque police at my primary care provider’s request and taken to the emergency room for psychiatric evaluation after I requested appointments for cancer screening and help with anxiety and… depression. But that’s not what bothered me. The didn’t have chamomile tea in the emergency room either. Really would’ve helped me stay calm under the circumstances.

Honestly, I’m amazed by the level of care and professionalism I’ve experienced at the VA. The staff has been attentive, respectful, and genuinely committed to helping veterans. I’ll admit—my expectations were shaped by… what I’d seen in movies like Born on the Fourth of July and Jacob’s Ladder. But what I experienced today was completely different—in the best way possible. Grateful for the people who show up every day to take care of those who served. 🇺🇸

I've heard the stories of how bad the VA is and the sub-standard treatment the veterans receive, but I have to write that my father and uncle received outstanding care at the Albuquerque VA hospital until it was time… for them to pass. As for myself as a veteran, and one who receives medical care at the same hospital, I've only receive fantastic care and advice from the staff and physicians there. People may complain about the Emergency Room, but I've taken relatives to Lovelace and Presbyterian, where they were treated like cattle than I have received at the VA E.R.
