What ComPsych Actually Provides

ComPsych is one of the larger providers of employee assistance programs in the United States, and it also administers behavioral health benefits for some employers. Those are two different things and it is worth knowing which your employer bought.

An employee assistance program offers short-term counseling, assessment and referral, usually free to the employee and confidential from the employer. A behavioral health benefit is insurance coverage that pays for treatment. Some employers offer both through ComPsych; many offer only the EAP.

Why the EAP Is Worth Using

Confidentiality at Work

This is the question people actually want answered, and the answer is reassuring with one qualification.

EAP counseling is confidential. Your employer receives aggregate usage data rather than names, and federal privacy rules apply. Addiction treatment records carry additional protection beyond ordinary medical confidentiality. The qualification is that a referral made through a formal management process, sometimes called a mandatory referral, works differently and does involve the employer, so be clear which you are entering.

If you approach the EAP yourself, that is a self-referral and it stays between you and the counselor.

What Happens After the EAP

EAP sessions are limited, commonly a handful per issue per year. That is enough for assessment and for short-term support, and it is not enough for treatment of a substance use disorder.

At that point you move onto your health plan, and the questions become the usual ones: which facilities are in network, what needs prior authorization, what you will pay. The EAP counselor can frequently help with the handover, and that assistance is worth accepting rather than starting again alone.

Where ComPsych Administers the Benefit

Where an employer has ComPsych administering behavioral health coverage rather than only the EAP, it takes on the role a company like Optum or Carelon plays elsewhere: holding the provider network, applying medical necessity criteria and authorizing admissions.

In that case detox and residential treatment will require prior authorization, with continued stay reviewed as treatment progresses. Ask which arrangement your employer has, because it determines whether ComPsych is your referral route or your authorization authority.

Coverage by Level of Care

Where treatment is covered, it follows the usual continuum: medically supervised withdrawal, residential care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient therapy, alongside medication for opioid use disorder. Federal parity law requires substance use benefits to sit on equal terms with medical ones on essentially all employer plans.

Emergency care applies regardless of authorization, and dangerous withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines belongs in an emergency department rather than a queue.

Verifying Coverage

Ask first whether ComPsych provides your EAP only, or your behavioral health benefit as well, because everything else follows from that answer.

What Treatment Costs

EAP sessions are typically free. Treatment beyond that is charged against your health plan’s deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum. The rates below show the underlying market cost before any coverage.

Leave and Job Protection

Coverage and time away from work are separate questions, and for someone considering residential treatment the second is often harder. Federal medical leave protections can cover treatment for a serious health condition at employers of sufficient size.

Raise leave with HR separately from the clinical conversation. The EAP counselor can advise on how to approach it without disclosing more than necessary.

If You Manage People

Supervisors frequently find this page while worrying about someone on their team. The useful thing to know is that you can consult an EAP yourself for advice on how to raise a concern, without naming the person as a case.

Raise the observable facts, missed deadlines, absence, behavior at work, rather than a diagnosis you are not qualified to make. Mentioning that the EAP exists and is confidential is legitimate; requiring someone to attend is a formal step with different rules and should involve HR.
