Rehabs That Take TriWest Healthcare Alliance

TriWest Healthcare Alliance administers TRICARE West, the military health program’s western region, and also supports community care networks for the Department of Veterans Affairs. TRICARE plans administered by TriWest can include drug and alcohol treatment for service members, retirees and families, with benefits varying by plan, network and level of care.Centers in several states name TriWest on their own websites. TRICARE rules on referrals and authorization depend on whether the beneficiary uses TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select, so have your plan details ready. Before admission, contact the facility and TriWest to check network status, any required referral or approval, and any cost share.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is TriWest Healthcare Alliance?

TriWest Healthcare Alliance is a Phoenix-based government health care contractor founded in 1996, not an insurance company. It runs the TRICARE West Region for the Department of Defense and administers the VA Community Care Network in Regions 4 and 5, where it builds the provider network and processes claims.

Benefits themselves are set by the government. TRICARE rules come from the Defense Health Agency, and VA decides what community care a Veteran receives.

TRICARE Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/tricare/
Is TriWest the same as TRICARE?

No. TRICARE is the Department of Defense health program managed by the Defense Health Agency; TriWest is the contractor that administers it in the West Region, starting January 1, 2025, when it took over from Health Net Federal Services. Humana Military runs the East Region.

Coverage, cost shares and rules come from TRICARE. TriWest handles the network, referrals, authorizations and claims for beneficiaries across its 26 West Region states.

TRICARE Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/tricare/
Does TriWest cover rehab?

Yes. TRICARE covers substance use treatment in the West Region, including inpatient care, detoxification, residential rehabilitation, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, medication assisted treatment and opioid treatment programs, when the care is medically necessary. TriWest administers those benefits rather than setting them.

Aversion therapy and unproven substance use treatments are excluded. Veterans reach community programs a different way, through a VA referral under the Community Care Network.

TriWest Healthcare Alliance is a government health care contractor rather than an insurance company. It runs the TRICARE West Region for the Defense Health Agency and administers the VA Community Care Network in Regions 4 and 5, so the benefit on the card belongs to TRICARE or to VA while TriWest holds the network contract, the authorization file and the claim.

The company was founded in 1996 and is based in Phoenix, owned by a group of nonprofit health plans and university health systems that includes Blue Shield of California, Regence Blue Shield, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, HMSA in Hawaii, the University of Colorado Hospital Authority and the University of New Mexico Hospital. TriWest began serving the West Region in January 2025 under the T-5 contract, covering roughly 4.3 million active duty service members, retirees and family members across 26 states.

This guide sets out which addiction services TriWest authorizes under each program, where pre-authorization applies and what changed in May 2026, what a stay costs under the 2026 TRICARE cost shares, how medication is paid for, and what a treatment program has to hold before a claim will pay at all.
