Is Wellpoint the same as Amerigroup?

Yes, in most states. Amerigroup plans took the Wellpoint name in January 2024 in Arizona, Iowa, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas and Washington, with Maryland switching on January 1, 2023 and the District of Columbia later. Benefits, coverage and provider networks did not change at the rebrand.

Georgia keeps the Amerigroup name for Medicaid, and Amerigroup-branded Medicare Advantage plans are reported to remain in New Mexico.

Yes. Substance use disorder treatment is a covered benefit across Wellpoint's Medicaid plans, though the levels of care follow each state contract. Texas STAR lists outpatient treatment, detoxification, medication-assisted therapy and residential treatment with room and board; Tennessee lists inpatient, residential and outpatient substance use benefits.

Does Wellpoint Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. Coverage includes assessment, medically supervised withdrawal, residential treatment, intensive outpatient, outpatient counseling, medication for opioid use disorder, case management and peer support, generally with little or no cost sharing.

Wellpoint is the rebranded Amerigroup, part of Elevance Health, and it operates Medicaid managed care and Medicare plans under contract to state governments. Older correspondence and directories still carry the Amerigroup name, which causes some confusion.

Your State Sets the Benefit

Medicaid benefits are defined by each state, and Wellpoint delivers them under contract. What residential treatment is covered, how it is authorized and whether a state has expanded Medicaid at all vary considerably. A Wellpoint member in Tennessee and one in Maryland are in genuinely different positions.

Expansion and Eligibility

This is worth raising early because it determines whether coverage is available at all. Tennessee, Texas and Georgia have not expanded Medicaid in the ordinary way, which means adults without dependent children generally do not qualify at any income unless pregnant, aged, blind or disabled. Georgia operates a limited expansion requiring qualifying activity. Maryland and other states in Wellpoint’s footprint have expanded.
