Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about Costa Rica

Answered from what is listed here.

Is public addiction treatment free in Costa Rica?

Public drug and alcohol treatment in Costa Rica comes mainly from the national institute on alcoholism and drug dependence, a public body under Costa Rica's Ministry of Health, which says all its treatment is free.

Cover from the national social security fund, the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS), is not needed, and the institute runs outpatient detox, assessment and therapy groups in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, plus regional outpatient centers.

How are rehab programs authorized in Costa Rica?

The Instituto sobre Alcoholismo y Farmacodependencia (IAFA), Costa Rica's national institute on alcoholism and drug dependence, authorizes programs in two steps: a technical aval, then an aprobación after inspection.

The aprobación stays valid for two years, and IAFA staff carry out follow-up visits to the program while it is in force.

Do I need a visa for rehab in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's visa guidelines sort nationalities into four groups: the first enters visa-free for up to 180 days, the second visa-free for 30 days extendable to 90, and the last two need a consular or restricted visa. The guidelines list no medical treatment visa, so nationality decides whether a 30 to 90 day stay fits.

Drug and alcohol treatment in Costa Rica has a free public route run by IAFA, the national institute on alcoholism and drug dependence, alongside private programs paid for by the person or family. Outpatient care is listed at most of the rehabs in Costa Rica, walk-in rehab at about half, and residential programs at some.

Costa Rican listings are grouped by town, with pages for San José, Liberia, Limón, Nosara, Puntarenas and Tamarindo. Rehab is also listed in Colombia and Mexico.

Costa Rican entries rest on several sources at once: public directories of authorized programs, licensing records, accreditor lists and program descriptions supplied by the providers. Spanish is used in treatment at nearly all of them and German at a few.
