Treatment Centers in California That Accept Blue Shield of California

Blue Shield of California pays for drug and alcohol rehab across its employer, individual, Medicare, CalPERS and Medi-Cal plans, and since January 1, 2026 it manages that care itself as Blue Shield Behavioral Health. Residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs need prior authorization; office therapy and office-based opioid treatment do not.

The programs listed here are gathered from California licensing records and government treatment registers, and CARF or Joint Commission accreditation shows on the listings that carry it. Blue Shield Promise members in Los Angeles and San Diego reach rehab through the county, so those counties appear alongside Oakland, Sacramento and the Central Valley below.

Rehabs by setting in California

Other parts of California, and what each is near.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Does Blue Shield of California Cover Rehab in California?

Yes. Blue Shield of California covers substance use disorder treatment in outpatient and inpatient programs, and its 2026 and 2027 plan summaries carry separate rows for office visits, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, inpatient hospital care and residential care. California drug and alcohol rehabs taking Blue Shield of California plans are listed by city below.

Blue Shield of California sells coverage in no other state, and its parent since January 2025 is Ascendiun, a nonprofit holding company. On January 1, 2026 Blue Shield took behavioral health back from Magellan, which had run it as the Blue Shield Mental Health Service Administrator, and members in treatment that day were not asked to discharge and readmit.

Is Blue Shield of California the same company as Anthem Blue Cross?

No. Blue Shield of California, headquartered in Oakland, holds only the Blue Shield license in the state, while Anthem Blue Cross holds the Blue Cross license as part of Elevance Health. The two compete for the same employers and Covered California customers, and both serve federal employees under the FEP Blue plan in California.

Does Blue Shield of California Cover Inpatient Rehab in California?

Yes. Blue Shield covers hospital-based inpatient rehab and longer residential stays with insurance when medically necessary, with medical necessity judged under California’s SB 855 by the ASAM Criteria for substance use disorders. Blue Shield Promise Medi-Cal members are the exception: their residential care comes from the county through the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System.

How long will Blue Shield of California pay for residential rehab?

Blue Shield of California decides it through prior authorization, judging each residential stay against the ASAM Criteria as California’s SB 855 requires for substance use disorders. Days also appear in cost sharing: the 2026 Gold 80 Trio HMO charges its residential copay per day for up to five days of each admission.

Does Blue Shield of California need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes. Since January 1, 2026 Blue Shield requires prior authorization for acute inpatient care, residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs. An expedited acute admission is decided within 24 hours, other expedited requests within 72 hours, and standard requests within five business days of a complete request. Questions go to Blue Shield Behavioral Health, (877) 263-9952.

Does Blue Shield of California Cover Detox in California?

Yes. Blue Shield’s 2023 HMO provider manual lists medical acute detoxification among covered substance use services, and acute inpatient care needs prior authorization except in an emergency. Emergency services are on Blue Shield’s list of care that never needs prior authorization, along with initial assessments at insured medical detox programs and other providers.

Does Blue Shield of California Cover Outpatient Rehab in California?

Yes. Blue Shield covers outpatient substance use treatment and intensive outpatient through insurance, with intensive outpatient set at three or more hours on at least three days each week and partial hospitalization at five or more hours on at least four days. Initial assessments, outpatient therapy and medication management need no prior authorization.

Blue Shield of California’s 2026 individual Trio HMO plans, sold in 28 counties, include Teladoc Health mental health visits at no cost, and Tandem PPO members can book virtual sessions with psychologists, psychiatrists and marriage and family therapists through Virtual Blue. Blue Shield Promise states there is no limit on outpatient mental health visits for its Medi-Cal members.

Does Blue Shield of California Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Blue Shield of California covers medications for addiction treatment through drug lists that differ for individual, small group, large group and Medicare plans, and its plan summaries exempt office-based opioid treatment from the prior authorization that applies to other outpatient substance use services. Promise members receive MAT clinic care under Medicaid through their primary care provider.

Does Blue Shield of California cover methadone?

Yes. Methadone tablets and oral solution sit on Blue Shield’s Standard Drug Formulary as the alternative for opioid treatment after brand Diskets came off on January 31, 2026. Opioid treatment program services appear in the 2026 Inspire HMO summary and in one employer’s 2026-27 Blue Shield 65 Plus group plan, so methadone clinic programs are a Medicare Advantage benefit there.

Does Blue Shield of California cover Suboxone?

Yes for office-based treatment, which needs no prior authorization on Blue Shield’s commercial plans; the formulary tier for buprenorphine depends on which of Blue Shield’s Standard, Value or Performance drug lists the plan uses. Promise Medi-Cal members get buprenorphine and Suboxone care paid by Medi-Cal Rx, which has covered their prescriptions since January 1, 2022.

Blue Shield of California Rehab Centers by the Beach, on the Bay and in the Sierra

Blue Shield of California sells a PPO through Covered California in all 19 pricing regions, so its members can reach coastal, bay and mountain programs under one network. What changes by setting is the Medi-Cal side, because Blue Shield Promise exists only in Los Angeles and San Diego counties.

Blue Shield of California rehab near Southern California beaches

Coastal programs in Santa Monica, Long Beach, La Jolla and Pacific Beach fall inside the two counties where Blue Shield Promise serves Medi-Cal members and where Blue Shield sells its HMO D-SNP. For Promise members near rehabs near beaches, the county authorizes care; commercial members need Blue Shield’s prior authorization for facility-based care.

Blue Shield of California rehab around San Francisco Bay

San Francisco Bay touches six Covered California regions, among them Marin in Region 2, San Francisco in 4, Alameda in 6 and Santa Clara in 7, and Blue Shield’s PPO is sold in each. Members near rehab centers near bays use Blue Shield commercial plans, since there is no Promise Medi-Cal option north of Los Angeles.

Blue Shield of California rehab in the Sierra Nevada

Covered California Region 1 covers 22 northern and Sierra counties, from Nevada County’s Truckee to Tuolumne and Shasta, and Blue Shield’s PPO is sold there as everywhere. Near rehabs near mountains and Grass Valley recovery programs, non-participating providers cost more under that PPO’s out-of-network rules.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Blue Shield of California?

Browse the listings on this page. All the programs here take Blue Shield of California, and the filters cut the list down by city, level of care and substance treated, with each facility’s phone number on its listing. Programs taking Blue Shield Promise for Medi-Cal have their own page.

Admission for a residential, partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient program starts with a prior authorization request to Blue Shield Behavioral Health, which the facility usually files; a facility that was in network through Magellan had to contract with Blue Shield directly to stay in network after January 1, 2026. Promise members start with their county line.

Blue Shield of California rehab in Stockton, Modesto and San Jose

Blue Shield Inspire (HMO), a Medicare Advantage plan, is sold in San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced and Santa Clara counties, and its 2026 summary lists opioid treatment program services and outpatient therapy among its benefits. Stockton rehab centers and Modesto treatment options appear in the listings for Inspire and other Blue Shield members.

Can I use Blue Shield of California for rehab in a different state?

Yes, through the BlueCard Program, which lets Blue Shield members use other Blue plans’ providers while outside California, with Blue Shield Global Core abroad. Blue Shield’s HMO plans, including Trio and Access+, limit that to emergency and urgent care, so planned out-of-state rehab needs a PPO or a prior authorization.

How much does rehab cost with Blue Shield of California?

Blue Shield of California’s costs depend on plan type: HMO plans mostly use flat copays for outpatient visits and a per-day copay or coinsurance for inpatient and residential care, while PPO plans use coinsurance after the deductible. The 2027 Bronze 60 PPO charges 40 percent in network and 50 percent out of network for residential care.

Blue Shield Promise members pay nothing for county rehab services while their income is under the Medi-Cal limit, and Promise outpatient mental health carries no copay or deductible. Members between plans can also find sliding scale programs in Southern California rehab listings below.
