Treatment Centers in California That Accept Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente covers drug and alcohol rehab in California mainly through its own addiction medicine departments, which members can reach without a referral in both its Northern and Southern California regions. An outside facility is covered when Kaiser’s medical group authorizes the referral, and Kaiser Medi-Cal members are referred to their county for substance use treatment.

Every facility listed was located through California’s licensing records or government treatment registers, and any CARF or Joint Commission accreditation is shown with it. Kaiser’s Medi-Cal contract covers 32 counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Alameda and Sacramento, so programs in those areas appear below with their county access lines.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Does Kaiser Permanente Cover Rehab in California?

Yes. Kaiser Permanente covers drug and alcohol rehab in California, and it states that the addiction treatment its care team recommends will be covered by the member’s health plan. Care is normally delivered by Kaiser’s own addiction medicine programs or providers Kaiser authorizes, and California drug and alcohol rehabs outside Kaiser are covered when Kaiser authorizes them.

Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., a California nonprofit based in Oakland, issues Kaiser’s California contracts, and Kaiser Permanente Insurance Company underwrites its PPO and point-of-service products. California has two Kaiser regions, each with its own Permanente Medical Group, and Kaiser Permanente plans run addiction care as Addiction Medicine and Recovery Services in the north and Addiction Medicine in the south.

Does Kaiser Permanente Have a Medi-Cal Plan in California?

Yes. Since January 1, 2024, the California Department of Health Care Services has contracted directly with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan for Kaiser Permanente Medi-Cal in 32 counties, on a five-year term. Enrollment is limited to recent Kaiser members, their family, foster youth and people with both Medicare and Medi-Cal, plus default enrollment up to a county cap.

Does Kaiser Permanente Cover Inpatient Rehab in California?

Yes. Kaiser’s California benefit summaries list inpatient detoxification as a substance use benefit, and named plans such as Stanford’s 2026 Kaiser HMO also cover residential rehab through transitional residential recovery services. Because general exclusions in some summaries mention residential facilities, the plan’s Evidence of Coverage is the document that settles whether a residential stay is included.

How long will Kaiser Permanente pay for residential rehab?

Kaiser’s medical group decides it, because Kaiser authorizes residential and outside care itself. On one California employer plan, Stanford’s 2026 Kaiser HMO, transitional residential recovery is priced per admission rather than per day. Kaiser Medi-Cal members placed in residential care by an organized delivery system county such as Los Angeles face no state maximum on days.

Does Kaiser Permanente need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Only for care outside Kaiser. Most care from Kaiser’s own mental health and substance use specialists needs no referral or prior authorization, but a non-Kaiser inpatient rehab program is covered only when Kaiser’s medical group approves the referral in advance, including when a service is not available from Kaiser providers. Emergency care needs no authorization anywhere in the world.

Does Kaiser Permanente Cover Detox in California?

Yes. Inpatient detoxification is one of the three substance use lines in Kaiser’s California group benefit summaries. What a member pays for inpatient detox programs depends on the plan: no charge on Contra Costa County’s 2026 Traditional HMO, 20 percent on the small-group HMO with coinsurance, and 30 percent after the deductible on the Deductible HMO.

Does Kaiser Permanente Cover Outpatient Rehab in California?

Yes. Kaiser covers individual and group outpatient addiction treatment, and Stanford’s 2026 California HMO lists intensive outpatient and day treatment at no charge. Group substance use visits usually cost less than individual ones on Kaiser HMO plans, and visits are offered in person, by video or by phone, with no visit cap shown in the California summaries.

Kaiser’s Northern California region may approve outpatient care with a community provider when a timely Kaiser appointment is not available, and members contact the Department of Psychiatry directly without a primary care referral. Kaiser members in both regions can use Headspace and Calm without charge.

Does Kaiser Permanente Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Kaiser Permanente covers medications for addiction treatment through region- and plan-specific formularies, such as its 2026 California Commercial Marketplace Formulary, and members reach Kaiser’s addiction medicine doctors without a referral. Prescriptions for Kaiser Medi-Cal members are paid by Medi-Cal Rx, a state program, not by Kaiser.

Does Kaiser Permanente cover methadone?

Yes on at least one California employer plan: Stanford’s 2026 Kaiser Permanente HMO lists methadone maintenance as a covered benefit at no charge, and other plans set it in their Evidence of Coverage. Kaiser Medi-Cal members receive methadone clinic treatment through a licensed Narcotic Treatment Program arranged by their county, which must offer a non-urgent appointment within three business days.

Does Kaiser Permanente cover Suboxone?

Kaiser’s answer depends on the member’s formulary: Kaiser publishes region and plan formularies, and it says the addiction treatment its clinicians recommend is covered by the member’s plan. For Kaiser Medi-Cal members, Suboxone through Medicaid is paid by Medi-Cal Rx, and naltrexone covered by insurance follows each Kaiser formulary.

Kaiser Permanente Rehab Centers Near Hot Springs, on the Coast and at Lake Tahoe

Kaiser Permanente’s Medi-Cal map reaches beyond the big metros into wine country, the Central Coast and the Sierra foothills, because its 32 counties include Napa, Sonoma, Santa Cruz, Ventura, El Dorado and Placer. In each of those counties Kaiser sits beside at least one other plan, and the county runs rehab.

Kaiser Permanente rehab near Napa Valley hot springs

Napa and Sonoma counties, with Calistoga’s hot springs at the north end of Napa Valley, list Partnership HealthPlan of California and Kaiser as their Medi-Cal plans. Napa has run the organized delivery system since December 15, 2017 and Sonoma since December 1, 2024, so rehabs near hot springs around Santa Rosa treatment programs fall under full county coverage.

Kaiser Permanente rehab near Central Coast beaches

Santa Cruz County pairs Kaiser with Central California Alliance for Health, and Ventura County pairs it with Gold Coast Health Plan; both counties joined the organized delivery system in 2018. Near beachside rehab centers in Capitola, Oxnard and Ventura County rehab programs, the county authorizes residential care, while Kaiser handles mild to moderate mental health care.

Kaiser Permanente rehab around Lake Tahoe

El Dorado and Placer counties, which share Lake Tahoe’s California shore, both list Kaiser for Medi-Cal, beside Anthem and Mountain Valley in El Dorado and Partnership in Placer. Kaiser also began serving northern Nevada in 2026, where visiting members get routine care at standard copays, while rehabs near lakes on the California side follow county Medi-Cal rules.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Kaiser Permanente in California?

Browse the listings on this page. The programs shown work with Kaiser Permanente, and filtering by city, level of care and substance shows which ones offer detox, residential or outpatient care near home. Each listing gives the program’s direct number, and private insurance rehabs are grouped on another page.

Admission depends on whether the program is Kaiser’s own. Kaiser addiction medicine takes members without a referral, through 1-888-937-5748 in Northern California, which routes to a crisis center after hours, or 1-833-579-4848 in Southern California, where 1-800-900-3277 answers crises at any hour. An outside program needs Kaiser’s advance authorization, and Medi-Cal members’ care is authorized by the county.

Kaiser Permanente rehab in Los Angeles

Los Angeles County falls in Kaiser’s Southern California region, where Addiction Medicine runs the program and Kaiser is one of three Medi-Cal plans beside L.A. Care and Health Net. Medi-Cal members there are referred by Kaiser for county authorization from Los Angeles County Substance Abuse Prevention and Control, covering care at Los Angeles rehab programs and Santa Clarita treatment centers.

Kaiser Permanente rehab in Orange County

Orange County Medi-Cal members choose between CalOptima Health and Kaiser, and the state’s Orange County plan directory notes that people with both Medicare and Medi-Cal are one group allowed into Kaiser’s Medi-Cal plan. Their rehab is authorized by the county, whose line is (855) 625-4657, for Orange County treatment options and Anaheim rehab centers.

Kaiser Permanente rehab in San Diego

San Diego County is a Geographic Managed Care county with four Medi-Cal plans, and Kaiser’s Medi-Cal phone, 1-855-839-7613, serves its members there and statewide. Kaiser refers San Diego Medi-Cal members needing rehab to the county, whose access line, (888) 724-7240, authorizes care at San Diego treatment centers and El Cajon recovery programs.

Kaiser Permanente rehab in Oakland and the East Bay

Oakland is Kaiser Permanente’s headquarters, and Alameda and Contra Costa counties are two of the three single-plan Medi-Cal counties, where Kaiser is the alternative to the local plan. Contra Costa County’s own 2026 Traditional HMO for employees lists inpatient detox at no charge, and Oakland treatment programs and Concord rehab centers appear in the listings.

Kaiser Permanente rehab in Sacramento

Sacramento sits in Kaiser’s Northern California region, where The Permanente Medical Group has practiced since 1948 and Addiction Medicine and Recovery Services runs addiction care. The City of Sacramento offers its employees Kaiser HMO plans, and the county’s (888) 881-4881 line authorizes Kaiser Medi-Cal members’ care at Sacramento rehab centers.

Can I use Kaiser Permanente for rehab in a different county or state?

Yes within Kaiser’s areas, mostly not outside them. A member visiting another Kaiser region gets routine care at standard copays, but outside Kaiser areas most plans cover only emergency and urgent care; the travel line is 951-268-3900. Medi-Cal rehab follows the county that holds the case, whichever Kaiser facility is nearest.

How much does rehab cost with Kaiser Permanente?

Kaiser Permanente’s California HMO plans charge a flat copay per outpatient visit and either no charge, a per-admission copay or coinsurance for inpatient care. The 2026 Deductible HMO applies 30 percent coinsurance after the deductible to every mental health and substance use service, while Kaiser Medi-Cal members pay no copays.

Kaiser Permanente’s closed network means an outside program needs Kaiser’s authorization before admission, while Kaiser’s own addiction medicine programs need no referral. Northern California rehab programs and sliding scale treatment are also listed for people outside Kaiser’s areas or between plans.
