The Campo Band of Diegueño Mission Indians, a Kumeyaay people, holds the reservation here, and the community has been continuously inhabited far longer than any record of it.

The Gaskill Brothers’ stone store, built after a gunfight with a raiding party in 1875, still stands as a museum — one of the older surviving structures in the back country.
