Fletcher Hills climbs the western slopes of El Cajon, on the ridge that separates the valley from La Mesa.

It is named for Colonel Ed Fletcher, the land developer and state senator whose subdivisions shaped a great deal of inland San Diego County in the first half of the twentieth century.

El Cajon itself takes its name from the Spanish for the box — a description of the valley, ringed by hills, that the Rancho El Cajon land grant covered.

The housing here is mostly postwar, on hillside lots with views west toward the city and east across the valley floor.

Navajo Road, Fletcher Parkway and Interstate 8 connect it in every direction, with downtown San Diego around twenty minutes west.

San Diego County recorded 340 fentanyl-caused deaths in 2025, down from 802 in 2022, and overall overdose deaths fell 21 percent between 2023 and 2024 — a third consecutive annual decline.
