Drug and Alcohol Rehabs in Lakewood, CA

Lakewood was built faster than almost any community in American history. Between 1950 and 1953, developers put up around seventeen thousand houses on former bean fields at a rate that reached a hundred a day.

It incorporated in 1954 and invented the contract city — buying policing and services from Los Angeles County rather than building its own departments. The Lakewood Plan was copied by dozens of cities afterward and remains the standard model in the county.

The Lakewood Center mall opened in 1952 as one of the largest in the country at the time, and the city still runs to the grid the developers laid.

Del Amo Boulevard, Carson Street and the 605 connect it, with Long Beach south and Bellflower north.

Los Angeles County recorded 2,298 accidental drug overdose and poisoning deaths in 2025, a 6 percent fall from the previous year and the third consecutive annual decline, according to the county Department of Public Health. Deaths are down nearly 30 percent from the 2022 peak of 3,220, driven by a more than 40 percent reduction in fentanyl-related deaths.

One figure from that analysis stands apart. While overdose deaths fell across almost every age group in 2025, deaths among adults aged 65 and over rose 14 percent — and the original buyers here are now in exactly that group.

Which Level of Care Do You Need

Lakewood carries around two listed programs, with Long Beach and Downey minutes away. Counts come from the federal SAMHSA treatment locator.

Medically Supervised Detox

Detox manages withdrawal under clinical observation, and in older adults alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can complicate existing cardiac and hepatic conditions. Around three detox programs sit in Long Beach and four in Downey within fifteen minutes.

Inpatient Residential Treatment

Residential care means living on site for weeks or months. Around one residential program operates in Lakewood, with 21 in Long Beach and nine in Downey nearby.

Outpatient, IOP and PHP Treatment

Outpatient care lets you sleep at home, which most older adults strongly prefer. Around 25 outpatient programs sit within fifteen minutes, and 203 county programs accept Medicare.

Dual Diagnosis and Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment

Dual diagnosis care treats a substance use disorder and a mental health condition together rather than one after the other. Bereavement, isolation and late-onset depression are common drivers in later life, and around 187 county programs treat co-occurring serious mental illness.

Sober Living Homes and Transitional Living

Sober living homes provide substance-free housing after formal treatment ends. They are rarely the relevant option for long-settled homeowners here, though transitional housing exists across the southeast county.

Addiction Treatment Cost and Insurance Coverage

Los Angeles County carries 203 Medicare-accepting programs, far more than any neighboring county.

How Much Does Addiction Rehab Cost in Lakewood

Outpatient care within reach runs roughly $1,200 to $5,000 a month and IOP $3,000 to $10,000, with detox at $7,000 to $24,000 and residential at $6,000 to $45,000. Around 35 programs within fifteen minutes accept Medicaid and 11 accept Medicare.

Medicare Part A covers inpatient treatment and Part B covers outpatient, both subject to deductibles and coinsurance. Dual eligibility for Medicare and Medi-Cal is common on a fixed income and opens more doors than either alone.

Does Insurance Cover Rehab in Lakewood

Yes. Medicare covers substance use treatment, and federal parity law requires most other plans to cover it on terms comparable to medical care. Within fifteen minutes around 35 programs accept Medicaid, 11 accept Medicare and 20 accept TRICARE.

Prescribed medication should be raised with a physician rather than stopped abruptly. Benzodiazepine withdrawal in particular should be medically managed, and a supervised taper is safer than a sudden stop. Los Angeles County provides no-cost substance use treatment at any provider in its network for anyone who meets the criteria, regardless of immigration status, and an intake appointment should be scheduled within ten calendar days of a screening.

Free and State-Funded Addiction Rehab in Lakewood, CA

Los Angeles County delivers publicly funded treatment through its Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System, administered by the Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Abuse Prevention and Control.

Dual eligibility for Medicare and Medi-Cal opens the widest set of options.

The LA County Help Line on 800-854-7771 is free, confidential and staffed 24 hours a day, and also handles mental health referrals.

Around 181 county programs run sliding fee scales, and the LA County Aging and Disabilities Department can help with arranging care for an older adult.

More Help and Recovery Support

Lakewood Regional Medical Center is in the city with an emergency department, and Long Beach Memorial — with a Level II trauma center — is around ten minutes south.

Alcoholics Anonymous runs daytime meetings across Lakewood and Long Beach through the Long Beach central office, which suit retired members better than evening groups. Narcotics Anonymous operates through the Southern California Region, and Al-Anon meets across the southeast county.
