Drug and Alcohol Rehabs in Venice, CA

Venice was built as a resort. Abbot Kinney opened it in 1905 with canals dug through the marshland, gondoliers imported from Italy and a pier with an auditorium at the end.

Most of the canals were filled in for streets in 1929, but a section survives south of Venice Boulevard and is now a historic district.

Muscle Beach began on the sand in 1934, and the weight pen that succeeded it drew the bodybuilding scene that made the boardwalk internationally known from the 1960s.

The Ocean Front Walk is one of the busiest public spaces in Southern California, and it also holds one of the most visible concentrations of unsheltered people in the city.

Lincoln Boulevard, Venice Boulevard and Pacific Avenue connect it, with Santa Monica north and Mar Vista inland.

Los Angeles County recorded 2,298 accidental drug overdose and poisoning deaths in 2025, a 6 percent fall from the previous year and the third consecutive annual decline, according to the county Department of Public Health. Deaths are down nearly 30 percent from the 2022 peak of 3,220, driven by a more than 40 percent reduction in fentanyl-related deaths.

The county’s own analysis found fentanyl overdose death rates nearly four times higher in its least affluent areas — those where more than 30 percent of families live below the federal poverty level — than in its most affluent, at 39.1 against 10.0 per 100,000 in 2024. Venice contains both extremes within a few streets of each other, and the boardwalk encampments have been the subject of repeated county and city intervention.

Which Level of Care Do You Need

Los Angeles County holds around 609 listed treatment programs, 286 of which accept Medicaid and 35 of which are licensed opioid treatment programs — by a wide margin the deepest publicly funded provision in Southern California. The city of Los Angeles alone carries around 137. Counts come from the federal SAMHSA treatment locator.

Medically Supervised Detox

Detox manages withdrawal under clinical observation across several days. The city carries around 26 detox programs, with five more in Santa Monica minutes north, four of them residential detox.

Inpatient Residential Treatment

Residential care means living on site for weeks or months, and for anyone without stable housing it addresses two problems at once. Around 45 residential programs sit within reach across the city and Santa Monica.

Outpatient, IOP and PHP Treatment

Outpatient care asks you to attend from wherever you are living, which is harder without a fixed address. The city carries around 99 outpatient and 30 intensive outpatient programs.

Dual Diagnosis and Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment

Dual diagnosis care treats a substance use disorder and a mental health condition together rather than one after the other. Around 54 city programs treat co-occurring serious mental illness — the level most relevant where housing instability, trauma and substance use compound each other.

Sober Living Homes and Transitional Living

Sober living homes provide substance-free housing after formal treatment ends, and in Venice recovery housing and transitional housing frequently overlap. Certification is by the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals.

Addiction Treatment Cost and Insurance Coverage

Medi-Cal enrollment does not require a fixed address, and Venice has established outreach infrastructure for exactly that.

How Much Does Addiction Rehab Cost in Venice

Outpatient care across the city runs roughly $1,200 to $5,000 a month and IOP $3,000 to $10,000, with detox at $7,000 to $24,000 and residential at $6,000 to $45,000. Around 72 city programs accept Medicaid and 44 run sliding fee scales, of 286 and 181 countywide.

Los Angeles County provides no-cost substance use treatment at any provider in its network for anyone who meets the criteria, regardless of immigration status, and an intake appointment should be scheduled within ten calendar days of a screening. Being unhoused is not a barrier to coverage, even though it is frequently assumed to be.
