Laguna Niguel sits inland of the coast in south Orange County, between Aliso Viejo and Dana Point.

The name combines the Spanish for lagoon with Niguili, a Juaneño village that stood near Aliso Creek.

The city was planned from 1959 on the Rancho Niguel and was among the first large master-planned communities in California. The Ziggurat, a federal building completed in 1971, is among the larger government structures west of the Mississippi.
