Rehab Centers in San Diego That Accept Medicare

Medicare can help pay for substance use care in San Diego, but only for certain services and only through providers enrolled in Medicare. The listings on this page report Medicare acceptance, based on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send in themselves.

Programs listing Medicare gather around central San Diego, Lemon Grove, National City and Imperial Beach. Before admission, ask intake staff whether the program bills Medicare for the service you need and what your share of the cost is likely to be.

Common questions about Medicare Rehab, San Diego

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are Medicare rehabs in San Diego?

Rehabs that record Medicare cluster across San Diego itself, then in Lemon Grove, National City, Imperial Beach and La Mesa. Ask intake staff first whether a program bills Medicare directly.

Neighborhood choice often comes down to travel for family members and for repeat outpatient visits. Asking the admissions team which Medicare plan types a provider works with, including Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, saves a wasted call later.

Rehab Centers in Hillcresthttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/california/southern-california/san-diego/hillcrest/
Do Medicare rehabs in San Diego take Medi-Cal?

Medi-Cal is also accepted by nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in San Diego, so people enrolled in both, often called dual eligibles, usually have treatment options in the city.

Medicare generally pays first, and Medi-Cal can pick up remaining costs it covers. Confirming that a program bills Medicare and Medi-Cal alike, and which Medi-Cal plan the person is enrolled in, keeps intake straightforward.

Treatment Centers in San Diego That Accept Medi-Calhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/california/southern-california/san-diego/medi-cal-san-diego/
Are there Medicare rehabs near the beach in San Diego?

Within 25 miles of most of the rehabs that take Medicare in San Diego lies a beach, and the nearest is a median of about 5.9 miles from listed facilities. Among named beaches, Coronado Shores Beach is first, followed by Crown Point Shores and Ski Beach. Admissions staff can share a program's address.

What does Medicare pay for in substance use treatment in San Diego?

In San Diego, Medicare pays for medically necessary addiction care through Part A, Part B and Part D, but it does not cover every kind of program. Part A pays for inpatient hospital and psychiatric hospital stays, including medically managed withdrawal.

You can see where that level of care is listed locally on the detox in San Diego page. Part B covers outpatient therapy and partial hospitalization, along with intensive outpatient programs and opioid treatment program services, which are offered by some methadone clinics in San Diego.

Part D drug plans cover prescribed medications such as buprenorphine and naltrexone. Deductibles, coinsurance and the yearly Part D out-of-pocket cap change every year, so get this year’s figures from 1-800-MEDICARE or Medicare’s own plan materials. Residential programs outside a hospital and sober living generally fall outside Original Medicare.

For people who also qualify for Medi-Cal, that program often fills the gap, and many dual enrollees are younger than 65 and qualify for Medicare through disability. Medicare Advantage plans tend to pay full rates only inside their networks and may need sign-off before higher levels of care, so confirm network status before scheduling intake.

Does Medicare cover residential rehab, and what else can San Diego residents use?

Original Medicare generally does not pay for residential programs outside a hospital, and it does not pay for sober living. Medi-Cal often fills that gap for people who qualify for both programs. Many people with both are under 65 and on Medicare because of a disability. In San Diego County, Medi-Cal is offered through plans that include Community Health Group Partnership Plan, Blue Shield of California Promise, Molina Healthcare of California and Kaiser Permanente.

County Behavioral Health Services runs the Access and Crisis Line at 1-888-724-7240, which answers 24 hours a day and can connect callers to county-funded care. You can check Medi-Cal eligibility at 1-866-262-9881. California’s Medicare Savings Programs can help some people with limited income pay Medicare premiums and cost sharing. Options without insurance are covered on the state-funded rehab in San Diego page.

How do Medicare Advantage plans affect your choice of a San Diego program?

Medicare Advantage plans pay only their own network providers in full and often require prior authorization for higher levels of care. Ask the plan whether a listed program is in network before you schedule intake. Then ask the admissions team four things:

  • Is the program enrolled in Medicare?
  • Which services does it bill to Medicare?
  • What will you pay out of pocket?
  • Are telehealth visits available?

Since 2024, licensed counselors and marriage and family therapists can enroll as Medicare providers. That change widens which outpatient clinics can bill Medicare, but enrollment still varies from one clinic to the next.

Where programs listing Medicare are located

Programs listing Medicare in San Diego are mostly coastal. A median program is 4.2 miles from the ocean, and 95 percent are within 25 miles of a river, most often the San Diego River. Nearly nine in ten list San Diego International as their nearest major airport, a median of 6.1 miles away. The median distance to a park is 1.3 miles, with Mission Trails Regional Park among the most common. Many central-city sites are reachable by MTS trolley.

Browse other care options on the San Diego treatment page. For programs taking Medicare across California, see Medicare rehab in California. For free help comparing coverage, call 1-800-MEDICARE. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.
