Treatment Centers in California That Accept UnitedHealthcare

In California, UnitedHealthcare’s drug and alcohol rehab coverage comes through employer plans written by UnitedHealthcare of California and UnitedHealthcare Benefits Plan of California. Its California policy requires fully insured plans to cover residential treatment, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care without limiting it to short-term treatment, and its California behavioral health entity carries the Optum name.

The facilities on this page were identified from government treatment registers and California’s licensing records, and The Joint Commission or CARF accreditation appears on listings that hold it. UnitedHealthcare no longer runs a Medi-Cal plan here, so programs in San Diego, Orange County, Sacramento and Los Angeles are listed for its employer members.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Rehab in California?

Yes. UnitedHealthcare covers drug and alcohol rehab in California, and its California policy says fully insured HMO, EPO and POS plans must cover medically necessary mental health and substance use disorder treatment, including residential treatment, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care. California drug and alcohol rehabs taking UnitedHealthcare plans are listed below.

UnitedHealthcare of California issues the HMO plans and UnitedHealthcare Benefits Plan of California the EPO and POS plans, all sold through employers, including Level Funded plans for groups of 5 to 300. The SignatureValue HMO family comes from PacifiCare Health Systems of Cypress, bought by UnitedHealth Group on December 21, 2005; the PacifiCare name was retired in 2011.

Does UnitedHealthcare Have a Medi-Cal Plan in California?

No. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan entered Medi-Cal in 2017, left Sacramento County in November 2018 and stopped serving San Diego County Medi-Cal members on January 1, 2023. The California Department of Health Care Services, which runs Medi-Cal and sends rehab through county behavioral health departments, now lists no UnitedHealthcare plan in any county, and UnitedHealthcare sells no Covered California plans either.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Inpatient Rehab in California?

Yes. UnitedHealthcare’s California policy requires its fully insured plans to cover residential rehab programs and inpatient addiction care when medically necessary. Optum matches each member to a level of care using the ASAM Criteria, and it keeps a separate California set of clinical criteria among the state-specific sets it publishes.

How long will UnitedHealthcare pay for residential rehab in California?

As long as it stays medically necessary. UnitedHealthcare’s California mental health policy, dated August 2026, says coverage under its fully insured California plans cannot be limited to short-term or acute treatment. Self-funded employer plans administered by UnitedHealthcare set their own terms.

Does UnitedHealthcare need prior authorization for inpatient rehab in California?

Usually. One 2025 UnitedHealthcare employer certificate from outside California, a national Choice Plus plan, requires prior authorization for partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, and for out-of-network scheduled admissions five business days ahead. In California, UnitedHealthcare’s behavioral health entity is U.S. Behavioral Health Plan, California, licensed by the California Department of Managed Health Care.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Detox in California?

Yes. UnitedHealthcare’s California detox policy, BIP035.N, covers medical detoxification, inpatient acute detox when medical complications are present or highly likely, and medically necessary outpatient detox at insured medical detox programs. The same policy excludes rapid anesthesia opioid detox, aversion therapy and court-ordered services that are not medical.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Outpatient Rehab in California?

Yes. UnitedHealthcare’s California policy requires fully insured plans to cover outpatient rehab programs, intensive outpatient through insurance and partial hospitalization when medically necessary. OptumHealth Behavioral Solutions of California sets routine appointments within 10 business days in its California network manual.

UnitedHealthcare members can also request teletherapy by phone or video, use the Calm Health app at no extra cost, and on some employer plans join weekly virtual behavioral coaching. OptumHealth Behavioral Solutions of California holds NCQA managed behavioral health accreditation through June 18, 2028.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Optum Rx, UnitedHealth Group’s pharmacy manager, runs UnitedHealthcare’s drug benefit, and on its September 2026 commercial list acamprosate, disulfiram and oral naltrexone all sit in the lowest tier, none marked for prior authorization; naloxone nasal spray, including Narcan, is Tier 1 too. Disulfiram treatment with insurance and acamprosate cover alcohol use disorder.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover methadone in California?

Yes, with prior authorization. UnitedHealthcare’s California detox policy covers methadone maintenance and requires prior authorization for it, and methadone for opioid use disorder is billed as a medical benefit by opioid treatment programs rather than through the pharmacy, so methadone clinic treatment goes through that medical benefit.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover Suboxone in California?

Yes. The September 2026 UnitedHealthcare drug list places buprenorphine-naloxone film and tablets on Tier 2 and plain buprenorphine tablets on Tier 1, each with a quantity limit and without a prior authorization flag. Members starting Suboxone treatment with insurance can call UnitedHealthcare’s Substance Use Helpline, 1-855-780-5955, any hour.

UnitedHealthcare Rehab Centers on San Diego Bay, at Lake Tahoe and Along the Colorado River

UnitedHealthcare’s California rules have a geographic edge: a 2021 trade report said its fully insured California plans stopped paying out-of-network benefits outside the member’s service area, defined as California plus bordering states. That makes the San Diego coast, the Nevada line at Lake Tahoe and the Arizona line on the Colorado River worth looking at closely.

UnitedHealthcare rehab around San Diego Bay

San Diego Bay communities such as Coronado, National City and Chula Vista lie in the county where Optum, UnitedHealthcare’s sister company, has run the county’s behavioral health administrative services since 1997. UnitedHealthcare employer members near rehab centers near bays and Coronado treatment programs follow their plan’s network rules, and Medi-Cal care there is authorized through the Optum-run county line.

UnitedHealthcare rehab near Lake Tahoe ski resorts

Lake Tahoe straddles the California and Nevada line, and Nevada is a bordering state under the service-area rule reported in 2021. Rehabs near ski resorts on either shore and in nearby Truckee recovery programs therefore stay within reach of a fully insured California member’s out-of-network benefit, where the plan has one.

UnitedHealthcare rehab along the Colorado River

The Colorado River forms California’s border with Arizona from Needles south past Blythe, and Arizona, like Nevada, is a bordering state under that reported rule. Rehabs near rivers on the California bank sit in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, where Options PPO and Select Plus members keep out-of-network benefits at the lower level.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts UnitedHealthcare in California?

Browse the listings on this page. UnitedHealthcare members can sort these programs by town, treatment level or substance, and each one lists a phone number that reaches the facility directly. Detox, residential and outpatient programs are all included. Optum also manages behavioral care for other California plans, and Optum behavioral health plans have their own page.

Admission for facility-based care starts with prior authorization, which the facility requests after its assessment; in the national Choice Plus certificate that covers partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and out-of-network scheduled admissions. Employer-plan members can call 1-866-801-4409 or the number on the card, and out-of-network admissions need approval in advance to avoid a higher share of cost.

UnitedHealthcare rehab in Orange County

Orange County is home to UnitedHealthcare’s California HMO heritage: PacifiCare Health Systems was based in Cypress before UnitedHealth Group bought it in 2005, and its HMO lives on as SignatureValue. SignatureValue members near Orange County rehab centers and Fullerton treatment programs use the HMO’s network.

UnitedHealthcare rehab in San Diego

San Diego County is where UnitedHealthcare Community Plan ended its Medi-Cal service on January 1, 2023, yet Optum still answers the county’s Access and Crisis Line, (888) 724-7240, around the clock. Sharp Health Plan members there also moved to Optum behavioral management on January 1, 2026, and San Diego treatment programs appear in the listings.

UnitedHealthcare rehab in Sacramento

Sacramento County lost UnitedHealthcare’s Medi-Cal plan in November 2018, but OptumHealth Behavioral Solutions of California manages mental health and substance use benefits for Western Health Advantage, the Sacramento HMO, and is UnitedHealthcare’s California behavioral entity. Sacramento rehab programs and Folsom treatment centers appear below.

UnitedHealthcare rehab in Los Angeles

Los Angeles County employer members on UnitedHealthcare Options PPO or Select Plus can use programs outside the network at a lower benefit, while Select members stay in network except in emergencies. Federal employees on GEHA’s Standard, High or HDHP options use UnitedHealthcare’s Select Plus network for Los Angeles treatment centers and Torrance rehab programs.

Can I use UnitedHealthcare for rehab in a different state?

Yes, on plans with out-of-network benefits, such as Options PPO and Select Plus, which pay outside the network at a lower benefit. Select and Core Essential pay out of network only in emergencies, and fully insured California plans were reported in 2021 to limit out-of-network benefits to California and bordering states.

How much does rehab cost with UnitedHealthcare in California?

The cost depends on the employer’s plan. One national 2025 Choice Plus certificate from outside California lists no copayment for any in-network level of behavioral care and 20 percent coinsurance outside the network, which climbs to 50 percent when a required authorization is not obtained; Surest plans replace deductibles and coinsurance with set copays.

UnitedHealthcare and Optum both belong to UnitedHealth Group, so a California member’s rehab benefit, network and authorization all run through the same parent. Members leaving employer coverage can look at sliding scale rehab and Southern California treatment programs in the listings, and Medi-Cal accepts adults with incomes reaching 138 percent of the federal poverty level.
