Medically Supervised Detox Centers in Colorado

Detox in Colorado, also called withdrawal management, is the medically supervised first stage of care when stopping alcohol or another drug could bring on withdrawal. Most Colorado detox listings sit along the Front Range, though not all: 58 percent are in urban areas, 30 percent are rural, and the median listing stands at 5,485 feet above sea level.

Colorado listings draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details the providers supply themselves. Compare setting, medications, payment and admission hours below, then call intake staff to talk through fit before you travel.

Common questions about Detox

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Colorado cities have detox centers?

Detox centers in Colorado cluster in Denver, followed by Aurora, Colorado Springs, Arvada and Wheat Ridge. Denver, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins are the larger cities connected to these listings, so families comparing options often start with those cities before widening the search to smaller towns across the state.

Medically Supervised Detox Centers in Denverhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/colorado/denver/detox-denver/
Does Health First Colorado cover detox in Colorado?

Nearly all of the detox centers in Colorado record accepting Health First Colorado, the state's Medicaid program. Since July 1, 2025, behavioral health coverage has run through Regional Accountable Entities, including Rocky Mountain Health Plans, Northeast Health Partners, Colorado Community Health Alliance and Colorado Access, by region.

Members of Elevate Medicaid Choice through Denver Health are in a separate plan. Asking intake staff which plan a program bills, and confirming with the plan, avoids surprises before admission.

Are there detox centers near a river in Colorado?

Most of the detox centers in Colorado sit within 25 miles of a river, with a median of about 15.3 miles from each listed facility to the nearest one. The North Fork South Platte River, Burgess River and Crystal River are the rivers named most frequently near these programs.

What happens during detox (withdrawal management) in Colorado?

During detox in Colorado, a person is medically monitored, often with medication, while getting through withdrawal before ongoing treatment for substance use disorder begins. Federal clinical guidance describes detox stays in days rather than weeks, and length varies with the substance and the person’s health.

Colorado programs describe their services using withdrawal management levels from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, which run from outpatient visits with a prescriber to a hospital bed. The right level depends on the substance, how much and how long it was used, past withdrawals and other health conditions. You can also compare detox centers nationwide.

Home detox without a clinician is not safe for everyone. Stopping heavy daily drinking or long-term sedative use can bring seizures, so talk with a doctor first. Opioid withdrawal is rarely dangerous by itself, but tolerance falls quickly, which makes it a good moment to ask about buprenorphine or methadone.

Detox ends withdrawal but does not treat the underlying disorder, so plan the next step before discharge. Payment can come from Health First Colorado, Medicare or a private plan, each with its own rules on covered levels. Colorado’s Behavioral Health Administration licenses providers and adds service authorizations for care such as withdrawal management.

ASAM levelSettingWhat it involves
1-WMOutpatientScheduled visits with a prescriber; for mild, lower-risk withdrawal only
2-WMOutpatient with extended monitoringSeveral hours of daytime nursing observation
3.2-WMResidentialAround-the-clock support, with medical staff on call
3.7-WMInpatient, medically monitoredNurses on site 24 hours, physician oversight
4-WMHospitalIntensive medical care for severe or complicated withdrawal

Is it safe to detox at home, or do I need medical care?

Detoxing at home without a clinician is not safe for everyone, because withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can cause seizures and other life-threatening problems. People stopping heavy daily drinking or long-term sedative use should talk with a doctor first. Colorado listings for alcohol treatment and benzodiazepine treatment show which programs offer supervised withdrawal. Outpatient detox is only an option when a medical provider is overseeing it.

Opioid withdrawal is rarely dangerous in itself, but it is a key time to ask about medication such as buprenorphine or methadone. Tolerance drops quickly after stopping, so a return to use carries real risk. Colorado listings for opioid treatment include programs that start medication during detox.

Call 911 for a seizure, confusion, hallucinations, chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing. Call or text 988 to reach 988 Colorado for thoughts of suicide or an emotional crisis. Colorado’s Good Samaritan law, C.R.S. 18-1-711, gives some legal immunity to people who report an emergency overdose.

Does Health First Colorado, Medicare or private insurance pay for detox?

Health First Colorado, Medicare and many private plans can pay for detox, but each sets its own rules on which level of care it covers. Health First Colorado is the state’s Medicaid program and has covered the expansion adult group since January 1, 2014. Since July 1, 2025, its behavioral health benefit has run through Regional Accountable Entities: Rocky Mountain Health Plans, Northeast Health Partners, Colorado Community Health Alliance and Colorado Access. Denver Health’s Elevate Medicaid Choice is a separate managed care plan. See how Medicaid coverage works across listings.

Medicare Part A generally applies to hospital inpatient stays, and Part B to outpatient care from doctors and clinics. Not every Colorado program bills Medicare, so ask before admission or browse Medicare listings in Colorado. Private plans differ on prior approval and network rules.

Colorado residents without insurance have fewer obvious entry points, since the state has no separate substance use helpline. The Behavioral Health Administration oversees federal block grant funds that pay for some care for uninsured people. The administration also points people to its OwnPath directory. Colorado listings for state-funded programs show which providers accept public funding.

How are detox programs licensed in Colorado, and how can I look one up?

Colorado’s Behavioral Health Administration, part of the Department of Human Services, licenses detox and other behavioral health providers. Providers hold a Behavioral Health Entity base license, plus endorsements for the specific services they offer, such as withdrawal management. The Behavioral Health Administration’s licensing and designation page, on its website, explains these license types. Ask the admissions team which license and endorsements the program holds. Then compare that answer with the administration’s records.

What should happen after detox ends in Colorado?

Detox ends withdrawal, but it does not treat the substance use disorder, so plan the next step before discharge. Many people move straight into residential treatment in Colorado or a structured outpatient program. Anyone who started opioid medication should leave with a plan to keep taking it. Opioid treatment programs fall under the Behavioral Health Administration’s State Opioid Treatment Authority. Options include methadone clinics and buprenorphine prescribers.

Naloxone is easy to get in Colorado. Standing orders from the state health department’s chief medical officer let pharmacies and agencies give it to anyone at risk of experiencing or witnessing an overdose. Ask a pharmacist, or ask intake staff whether the program sends people home with naloxone.

Using the Colorado detox listings

Colorado detox listings show the detox setting, medications offered, payment types, insurers, languages and populations served. Some also show walk-in or 24-hour admission; see walk-in options. Denver, Aurora and Colorado Springs appear most often, while Grand Junction is the main hub on the Western Slope. The median distance from a listing to an airport is 14.7 miles, and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport is most often the closest. About 69 percent sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the North Fork South Platte River. More options are on the Colorado treatment page.
