DUI and DWI Programs in Connecticut

Connecticut’s court route for a first impaired driving arrest is the Impaired Driving Intervention Program, known as IDIP. The Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) oversees it through its Office of Pretrial Intervention. The program used to be called the Pretrial Alcohol Education Program, and older court paperwork may still use that name.

Listings here cover providers that report DUI or DWI services, plus clinics offering the outpatient, intensive outpatient and residential care an evaluation may recommend. Details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and what providers tell us about themselves. Confirm current services with intake staff before you rely on them.

Common questions about DUI and DWI Programs

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Connecticut cities have DUI programs?

Connecticut listings for DUI and DWI programs cluster in West Torrington, New Milford, Derby, Peach Lake and Bridgeport, in that order, so drivers outside the largest cities may find options closer to home than expected.

Waterbury, Bridgeport and Stamford are the larger cities near these listings. Anyone completing a court-referred program can ask intake staff about class schedules, evening sessions and whether the provider reports progress to the referring court.

Do DUI programs in Connecticut take HUSKY Health?

Nearly all of the DUI and DWI programs in Connecticut accept HUSKY Health, the state's Medicaid program. Behavioral health benefits run through the Connecticut Behavioral Health Partnership rather than managed care plans, with Carelon Behavioral Health CT handling administration. Members can ask intake staff which parts of a court-referred program the plan covers.

Are there DUI programs near a river in Connecticut?

Rivers are close to DUI and DWI programs in Connecticut: nearly all of the DUI and DWI programs in Connecticut sit within 25 miles of one, at a median of about 1.1 miles to the nearest. The West Branch Naugatuck River, East Aspetuck River and Naugatuck River are the most-named.

For a DUI program, the setting matters less than the schedule. Anyone attending regular sessions can ask the admissions team about parking, transit and how session times fit around work.

What DUI or DWI program does Connecticut require, and who oversees it?

Connecticut requires the Impaired Driving Intervention Program for people arrested for the first time for impaired driving, and the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services oversees the contracted providers that run it. State materials link the program to the pretrial statute, Connecticut General Statutes section 54-56g.

Whether you qualify, and what you must complete, is decided by the court handling your case. Three separate pieces are easy to confuse: the evaluation, the intervention program and clinical treatment. An evaluation sends the court a written report, and that report may suggest the intervention sessions alone or added clinical care as a condition.

Facility licensing for addiction treatment sits with the Department of Public Health’s Facility Licensing and Investigations Section. That license covers treatment, which is separate from a contract to deliver the intervention program. Court-ordered care can range from weekly outpatient counseling to an intensive outpatient schedule or a residential stay.

State sources describe the program as a first-arrest option and publish no hour counts for repeat or underage drivers, so ask the court clerk which rules apply to you. Your driver’s license is handled separately by the Department of Motor Vehicles, and finishing a program does not settle the charge itself; a lawyer can advise on that part.

How does the evaluation decide which program or treatment you need in Connecticut?

A substance use professional evaluates your alcohol and other drug use and sends the referring court a report with recommendations. The court then decides what you must complete. The report may say IDIP alone is enough, or it may recommend clinical care. Either way, the court can order treatment as a condition.

Recommended care can range from outpatient counseling to an intensive outpatient program or a residential stay. Some listings also report medication for alcohol use disorder or opioid use disorder. You can compare providers that accept legal referrals on the court-ordered rehab page for Connecticut or the alcohol rehab listings.

Repeat arrests and drivers under 21

Connecticut state sources describe IDIP as a first-arrest program. Those sources do not set out hour counts or separate tracks for repeat or underage drivers. Ask the court clerk or the Office of Pretrial Intervention which requirements apply to your case and how many sessions are expected. Under C.G.S. 17a-688(d), a minor in Connecticut can consent to alcohol or drug treatment on their own.

DUI listings with map locations sit in towns across western Connecticut, including West Torrington, New Milford, Derby and Bridgeport. All of them lie within 25 miles of a river, at a median of 1.1 miles, with the Naugatuck and its West Branch among the closest. Tweed New Haven Airport is the nearest airport for most, at a median distance of 23.3 miles.

Can you complete a DUI or DWI program online in Connecticut?

You can finish online only if the court that referred you accepts it. The state sources behind this page do not confirm online completion of IDIP. Before you pay for any virtual course, get the court’s or the program’s answer in writing.

Clinical treatment by video is a separate question. HUSKY Health pays for live video telehealth at the in-person rate for services on its telehealth list. Audio-only behavioral health is covered only when video is not workable for the member. Providers offering remote sessions appear on the Connecticut telehealth listings.

How do you pay for the program or court-ordered treatment in Connecticut?

The IDIP fee and treatment costs are paid separately, and no published state fee schedule for the program was found. Ask the court or the program what the intervention costs and whether you can request a fee waiver.

Treatment may be covered by private insurance or HUSKY Health, Connecticut’s Medicaid program run by the Department of Social Services. Behavioral health under HUSKY goes through the Connecticut Behavioral Health Partnership. Payment options in listings include Medicaid, sliding fee scales and state-funded programs. If you need services in another language, filter for Spanish-speaking providers or ask whether interpreters are available.

What happens after you finish the program, and how do you get your license back?

Your completion is reported back to the court, and your driver’s license is handled separately. Reinstatement and any ignition interlock condition fall under Connecticut’s Department of Motor Vehicles, so check its current rules for your case. Finishing a program does not guarantee any outcome on the charge, and a lawyer is the right person to ask about that.

What to bring and ask when you call a provider

Have your court paperwork, any evaluation report and your deadline ready when you call. Ask the admissions team how they report attendance and completion to the court. Ask too which insurance they bill and whether they can start you on schedule.

For help finding care today, call Connecticut’s Substance Use Services Access Line at 1-800-563-4086, which is open 24/7. DMHAS funds the line and Wheeler runs it. Staff can refer you to walk-in assessment, outpatient care, detox or residential beds. The national treatment referral line is another option, and 988 answers calls for a mental health or substance use crisis. More options across the state are on the Connecticut treatment page.
