Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in Georgia

An intensive outpatient program, or IOP, gives you structured substance use treatment several days a week while you live at home and keep up with work, school or family. Georgia’s IOP listings lean toward metro Atlanta. The places that appear most often include College Park, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Roswell, with a smaller group around Valdosta in the south.

Program details here come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send in themselves. RehabSeekers.com doesn’t rank or recommend programs, so treat each listing as a starting point for a call with intake staff.

Common questions about IOP

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are IOP programs in Georgia?

College Park, Dunwoody, Atlanta, Valdosta and Sandy Springs are where Georgia listings for intensive outpatient treatment cluster, and Athens joins Atlanta and Valdosta among the larger cities nearby. An intensive outpatient schedule means group and individual sessions on set weekdays while living at home, so a program within commuting distance matters.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in Atlantahttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/atlanta/iop-atlanta/
Do IOP programs in Georgia take Georgia Medicaid?

Georgia Medicaid is recorded as accepted by about half of the intensive outpatient programs in Georgia, so confirming coverage with the admissions team before a first group session can prevent an unexpected bill later on, since acceptance varies by program.

Members usually receive benefits through a Georgia Families care management organization. Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan appear on an undated state page naming those plans.

Rehab Centers in Georgia That Accept Georgia Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/georgia-medicaid/
Are there IOP programs near a river in Georgia?

Dog River, the Mulberry River and the Little Mulberry River are named most frequently near Georgia intensive outpatient listings. Most of the intensive outpatient programs in Georgia lie within 25 miles of a river, and the median distance from a listed facility to the nearest one is about 14.1 miles, measured separately for each facility.

What is an intensive outpatient program for substance use in Georgia?

An intensive outpatient program for substance use disorder in Georgia is a scheduled set of group and individual counseling sessions, held several days a week, for people who don’t need round-the-clock care. Sessions usually cover coping skills, planning for high-risk situations and family involvement, and some programs also offer medication for alcohol or opioid use disorder.

Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities oversees addiction services and contracts with providers across six state regions. Under criteria from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, adult intensive outpatient care means 9 or more weekly hours of treatment, and many attend for several weeks to a few months.

Some Georgia programs that call themselves intensive outpatient treat mental health conditions only, such as depression or anxiety. A substance use disorder program at this level is a different service, so ask which kind a listing runs. If you need help with both, look at dual diagnosis programs in Georgia.

The level fits people who are medically stable and have a safe place to live. Because withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids can be dangerous, a clinical assessment should come first, and the Georgia Crisis and Access Line, 1-800-715-4225, can point callers to an open detox or crisis bed statewide.

How many hours a week does IOP take, and how long does it last?

Adult IOP means at least 9 hours of treatment a week under The ASAM Criteria, the placement standard from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, which calls this Level 2.1. For adolescents the minimum is 6 hours. DBHDD licenses addiction treatment programs in Georgia, but this page doesn’t quote a Georgia rule on weekly IOP hours. Ask each program what its weekly schedule is.

Level of careASAM levelWeekly hoursSetting
Standard outpatient1Under 9 (adults), under 6 (teens)Office visits, live at home
Intensive outpatient2.19 to 19 (adults), 6 to 19 (teens)Clinic several days a week, live at home
Partial hospitalization2.520 or moreClinic most weekdays, live at home
Residential324-hour structureLive on site

How long IOP lasts depends on your assessment, not a set calendar. Many people attend for several weeks to a few months, and the clinical team adjusts the plan as goals are met. Be cautious if a program quotes a fixed number of weeks before it has assessed you.

Is IOP the right level of care, or is PHP or residential needed?

IOP fits people who are medically stable, have a safe place to live and can stay away from use between sessions with support. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids can be dangerous, so get a clinical assessment first. If you need withdrawal management, detox in Georgia or residential treatment in Georgia may come before IOP. Many people also move into IOP after finishing a partial hospitalization program in Georgia.

The Georgia Crisis and Access Line (GCAL), 1-800-715-4225, can help you find an open crisis or detox bed anywhere in the state and set up urgent appointments. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988.

Does Georgia Medicaid or private insurance cover IOP?

Georgia Medicaid serves most members through Georgia Families managed care, so your plan’s rules decide coverage for substance use IOP. The care management organizations the state has listed include Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan. Georgia ran a new plan procurement in 2024, so ask your plan which organization you’re in, whether it covers IOP and whether it needs prior approval. See programs that accept Medicaid.

Georgia has not adopted the ACA adult Medicaid expansion. Instead, Georgia Pathways to Coverage covers some adults with income up to 100% of the poverty level who take part in 80 hours a month of work or other qualifying activities. Pathways eligibility rules change on January 1, 2027.

If you have no insurance, DBHDD funds treatment through contracted providers, and GCAL can point you to one. See state-funded rehab in Georgia. Medicare and private plan benefits vary, so ask your insurer about outpatient substance use coverage, copays and network status.

Can I attend IOP in the evenings or online in Georgia?

Georgia listings include day tracks, evening tracks and virtual sessions, and each listing shows its program format. For Georgia Medicaid, covered telemedicine must use live audio and video, and telephone-only calls are listed as non-covered. Ask whether a program’s virtual group meets that rule, or browse telehealth rehab in Georgia.

Listings also show which insurers a program accepts, the languages it offers, including Spanish, and who it serves. You can narrow your search to teen programs, women’s programs or programs for veterans.

Georgia’s IOP listings are spread across settings: 45% are urban, 41% are in towns and 14% are rural. About two in three sit within 25 miles of a river, a median of 14.1 miles away, most often the Dog River. The nearest airport is a median of 10.4 miles away, most often DeKalb Peachtree Airport.

Looking up a Georgia license

House Bill 584 moved licensing of Drug Abuse Treatment and Education Programs from the Department of Community Health to DBHDD on January 1, 2026. To look up a program, ask for its license number and search it with DBHDD’s licensure office. Older paperwork may still show the Department of Community Health.

Using these listings

Compare a few programs by schedule, payment and distance before calling. If IOP turns out to be more than you need, standard outpatient rehab in Georgia meets fewer hours a week. For every level of care and city, start from the Georgia treatment overview.
