Outpatient Rehab Centers in Georgia

Outpatient rehab in Georgia means treatment for substance use that you attend while living at home. It does not mean physical therapy after an injury or surgery. Schedules range from a weekly counseling hour to most of the day, several days a week. Programs are listed from Dunwoody and Woodstock north of Atlanta to Gainesville, College Park and Valdosta.

Listings on RehabSeekers.com come from several kinds of sources: government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and details the providers send in themselves. Each listing shows the levels of care, payment types and services a program reports, so you can compare options before you call the admissions team.

Common questions about Outpatient Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Georgia cities have outpatient rehabs?

Outpatient rehab listings in Georgia cluster in Gainesville, College Park, Dunwoody, Woodstock and Atlanta. Athens and Macon are also worth checking for additional options. Because outpatient care involves regular travel to sessions, choosing a program close to home, school or work can make attendance easier to manage.

Outpatient Rehab Centers in Atlantahttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/atlanta/outpatient-rehab-atlanta/
Can I use Georgia Medicaid for outpatient rehab?

Yes. Most of the outpatient rehabs in Georgia record accepting Georgia Medicaid. Members in Georgia Families care management organizations such as Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan receive coverage through the plan they are enrolled in, so asking whether a program works with that specific plan before the first appointment is wise.

Rehab Centers in Georgia That Accept Georgia Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/georgia-medicaid/
Are there outpatient rehabs near a river in Georgia?

Within 25 miles, a river is found near most of the outpatient rehabs in Georgia, and the most-named rivers are Dog River, the Little Mulberry River and the Yellow River, as measured from each listed facility.

The median distance to the nearest river is about 14.5 miles. For regular outpatient visits, the commute to sessions often matters more than being near water.

What does outpatient treatment for substance use look like in Georgia?

Outpatient treatment for substance use disorder in Georgia is scheduled counseling, group therapy and medication care that people attend while keeping their work, school or family routines. Programs are concentrated in metro Atlanta, with smaller clusters around Augusta, Savannah, Columbus and Macon, and rural south and north Georgia have fewer choices.

About half of the listed outpatient programs in Georgia are in towns, and the rest split between urban areas and rural places, with urban settings the larger group. Most sit within 25 miles of a river, with the Dog River nearest to more of them than any other, and some lie within 25 miles of a named summit such as Stone Mountain.

Elevations run from 20 to 2,740 feet above sea level. DeKalb Peachtree Airport is the nearest airport for more programs than any other, and the median distance to an airport is 19 miles. Georgia licenses methadone providers as Narcotic Treatment Programs, while buprenorphine can be prescribed in office-based settings.

Standard outpatient care for adults usually totals fewer than 9 hours a week under the levels set by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, though each Georgia program sets its own schedule. Georgia Medicaid’s managed care program is Georgia Families, and since the state has not adopted the adult expansion, Georgia Pathways covers some lower-income adults.

Medications offered in outpatient settings

Medications for opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder are part of care at some Georgia outpatient programs. Buprenorphine can be prescribed in office-based settings, and listings for Suboxone clinics in Georgia show where it is offered. Methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed only by opioid treatment programs, which Georgia licenses as Narcotic Treatment Programs. Those are listed under methadone clinics in Georgia. Naltrexone and acamprosate are other options a prescriber may discuss.

Who the Georgia listings serve

Georgia law lets a minor consent alone to drug treatment from a hospital, public clinic or licensed physician, although the physician may still inform a parent. Programs for younger people appear under teen rehab in Georgia. The state’s Women’s Treatment and Recovery Services serve women who are pregnant or parenting children under 13. Veterans can look at VA medical centers in Decatur, Augusta and Dublin, or at veterans programs in Georgia. Spanish-language services are marked on the listings where a provider reports them.

How many hours a week is outpatient care compared with IOP and PHP?

Standard outpatient care is usually under 9 hours a week for adults, according to the ASAM level definitions. Intensive and partial hospitalization programs add more structured time. Schedules differ from one Georgia program to the next, so ask intake staff for the actual weekly hours.

Level of careTypical weekly hours (ASAM)
Standard outpatient (Level 1)Fewer than 9 for adults, fewer than 6 for adolescents
Intensive outpatient (Level 2.1)9 or more for adults, 6 or more for adolescents
Partial hospitalization (Level 2.5)20 or more

Georgia programs offering the two higher-intensity levels are listed under IOP in Georgia and PHP in Georgia.

Does Georgia Medicaid or private insurance pay for outpatient treatment?

Georgia Medicaid, Medicare and most private health plans can pay for outpatient substance use treatment, depending on your coverage. Georgia Medicaid’s managed care program is Georgia Families. Its care management organizations have included Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan, but plans can change, so check your current card. Georgia has not adopted the adult Medicaid expansion. Its Georgia Pathways program instead covers people with incomes up to 100 percent of the federal poverty level who log 80 hours a month of work or other qualifying activities. Pathways eligibility rules change on January 1, 2027. See programs that accept Medicaid.

Federal parity law generally requires private plans to cover substance use care on terms comparable to medical care. Each listing names the insurers a program reports accepting. If you have no coverage, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities contracts with providers in six state regions. Those providers appear under state-funded rehab in Georgia, and fee-based options appear under sliding-scale programs.

How can I find out whether an outpatient program in Georgia is licensed?

Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities licenses outpatient substance use programs. It issues licenses as Drug Abuse Treatment and Education Programs and as Narcotic Treatment Programs. House Bill 584 moved this licensing from the Department of Community Health to DBHDD on January 1, 2026, so an older license may still show the previous agency’s name. Ask the program for its license number and look it up through DBHDD’s licensure information.

Accreditation from the Joint Commission or CARF is another credential to ask about. A listing on RehabSeekers.com shows what a provider reports, so ask the program directly about its license and accreditation status.

When is outpatient care not enough?

Outpatient care may not be enough when withdrawal could be medically risky or when home is not a safe place to stay. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids can cause serious symptoms. Severe co-occurring mental health conditions may also call for more care. All of these are reasons to get an assessment before choosing a level of care. Medically managed withdrawal options are listed under detox in Georgia.

For urgent help, call the Georgia Crisis and Access Line at 1-800-715-4225. GCAL can arrange mobile crisis help, find an open crisis or detox bed, set up urgent appointments and connect you to state-funded providers. You can also call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency. For a broader view of outpatient care, see the national outpatient guide, or browse every treatment type on the Georgia locations page.
