Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in Idaho

Intensive outpatient programs, known as IOP, provide structured substance use treatment several days a week while you keep living at home and keep up with work, school or family. In Idaho, IOP listings gather around Garden City, Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Caldwell, Twin Falls and Nampa, and 78 percent sit in town settings, with 19 percent in rural areas.

The listings here are drawn from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves. Each one shows schedule, payment and language details, so you can compare programs before you call an admissions team.

Common questions about IOP

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Idaho cities have IOP programs?

Intensive outpatient listings in Idaho cluster first in Garden City, followed by Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Caldwell and Twin Falls. Schedules and session times vary by program.

Boise, Idaho Falls and Pocatello are the larger cities close to these listings. Because intensive outpatient treatment means traveling to sessions on set days each week, the regular drive matters, and asking about evening groups can make the schedule workable.

Rehab Centers in Garden Cityhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/idaho/garden-city-id/
Is intensive outpatient treatment covered by Idaho Medicaid?

Idaho Medicaid is recorded as accepted by nearly all of the intensive outpatient programs in Idaho, and Magellan of Idaho manages members' behavioral health coverage through the Idaho Behavioral Health Plan.

Members with both Medicaid and Medicare may be in Idaho Medicaid Plus or the Medicare Medicaid Coordinated Plan, offered by Molina Healthcare of Idaho and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Idaho. Intake staff can confirm which plan applies.

Rehab Centers in Idaho That Accept Idaho Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/idaho/idaho-medicaid/
Are there IOP programs near hot springs in Idaho?

About half of the intensive outpatient programs in Idaho sit within 25 miles of a hot or warm spring, at a median of about 19.1 miles from the nearest one. Elkhorn Warm Spring, Roystone Hot Springs and Nat-Soo-Pah Warm Spring are named most frequently. For a weekly schedule, the drive to sessions matters more.

What is an intensive outpatient program for substance use in Idaho?

An intensive outpatient program in Idaho is a set schedule of group and individual counseling for a substance use disorder, held several times a week with no overnight stay. Sessions usually combine group therapy, individual counseling, education about substance misuse and planning for recovery supports.

Many programs also work with a prescriber on medication for opioid or alcohol use disorder. Under the placement standard used nationwide, set by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, this level of care means a minimum of 9 structured hours weekly for adults and 6 for adolescents, though each program sets its own timetable.

Some Idaho listings are mental-health-only intensive programs for depression, anxiety or trauma. Those programs differ from addiction-focused ones, so read the program type on each listing. Intensive outpatient is one step in a wider range of outpatient rehab in Idaho.

Idaho Medicaid covers this level of care through the Idaho Behavioral Health Plan run by Magellan of Idaho, and expansion in January 2020 widened eligibility for adults on low incomes. Anyone at risk of alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal may need medically supervised care before starting.

How many hours a week does IOP take, and how long does it last?

Under the ASAM Criteria, the national placement standard from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, IOP is level 2.1. At that level adults get at least 9 hours of structured services a week, and adolescents get at least 6. The table compares IOP with the levels above and below it.

ASAM levelWeekly hoursSetting
1, outpatientFewer than 9 (adults)Office visits, live at home
2.1, intensive outpatient9 or more (adults), 6 or more (teens)Clinic sessions, live at home
2.5, partial hospitalization20 or moreMost of the day, live at home

Idaho’s standards for approved treatment programs are set by the Idaho Board of Health and Welfare under Idaho Code 39-305. This page does not quote an Idaho weekly hour minimum, so ask each program for its exact schedule.

IOP has no fixed length. A clinician sets the length after an assessment and revisits it as treatment goes on. Many people move down to standard outpatient care once they finish.

Is IOP the right level of care, or is PHP or residential needed?

IOP suits people who are medically stable, can stay safe between sessions and have a home setting that supports recovery. An assessment is how you find out whether that describes you. Intake staff ask about your substance use, your health, your housing and your past treatment, then match you to an ASAM level.

Anyone at risk of withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids may need withdrawal management before starting IOP. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be medically dangerous without supervision. Detox programs in Idaho handle that first stage. If you need more structure than IOP offers, the next options are partial hospitalization or residential rehab.

Does Idaho Medicaid or private insurance cover IOP?

Idaho Medicaid covers substance use treatment through the Idaho Behavioral Health Plan, which Magellan of Idaho runs. The plan’s outpatient rate schedule lists intensive outpatient services. Idaho expanded Medicaid in January 2020, so more adults on low incomes now qualify. You can compare programs on the Medicaid listings.

Idaho residents without insurance may qualify for the SUD Services Program from the Division of Behavioral Health. The program is funded by a federal block grant and delivered through Magellan of Idaho. Under IDAPA 16.07.17, eligibility depends on belonging to a priority population that the department sets each year. See state-funded rehab in Idaho for more.

Medicare and private insurers may also pay for IOP, but plan rules differ. Ask your plan about prior authorization and copays, and browse Medicare rehab in Idaho. Veterans can also ask the Boise VA Medical Center about outpatient care.

How do I find and look up an IOP in Idaho?

Day, evening and virtual schedules

Each listing shows whether a program offers daytime, evening or virtual sessions. Magellan of Idaho’s plan pays for intensive outpatient delivered by live audio and video at the same rate as in-person care. For remote options, see telehealth rehab in Idaho.

Listings also show accepted insurers, languages and the groups each program serves. Some programs focus on teens, women or veterans.

Idaho IOP listings sit at a median elevation of 3,880 feet. Seventy-three percent are within 25 miles of a river, most often the Portneuf or the South Teton River. The median distance to the nearest airport is 8.5 miles, and Boise Air Terminal/Gowen Field is the one most often nearest. Seventy-six percent of programs lie within 30 miles of an airport.

Approval status and where to get help

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare inspects approved treatment facilities and keeps the list of them. The state credential is called an approval. Ask the admissions team for the program’s approval status, then look the program up with the department.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988 at any time. Idaho has no separate state helpline. Instead, the department directs people on Medicaid and people without insurance to Magellan of Idaho at 1-855-202-0973, which answers around the clock. To see every type of care across the state, start from the Idaho rehab page.
