What is an intensive outpatient program for substance use in Chicago?

An intensive outpatient program in Chicago, or IOP, is a structured nonresidential level of care that the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) places at Level 2.1, with at least nine hours of services a week for adults and at least six for adolescents. Standard outpatient care runs below those hours.

A partial hospitalization program, ASAM Level 2.5, typically means 20 or more hours a week in a day setting. Program length depends on assessment and progress, often several weeks to a few months, not a fixed term. Chicago listings show day, evening or virtual formats where providers supply them.

Some Chicago IOPs treat mental health conditions only, so look for a listing that names addiction services. Illinois licenses addiction treatment organizations through a division of the Illinois Department of Human Services, under 77 Ill. Adm. Code Part 2060. You can ask intake staff for the license details and check them with that division.

Evening groups can make intensive outpatient care workable alongside a job, but a good number of West Side and South Side programs are on Chicago Transit Authority bus corridors rather than the ‘L’, so the trip home deserves planning. Illinois Medicaid may pay depending on the plan and network, and minors 12 and older can consent to treatment themselves.
