Rehab Centers in Indiana That Accept Medicare

Medicare pays for specific parts of substance use treatment in Indiana, but not for everything people picture when they hear the word rehab. Hospital-based withdrawal care, outpatient counseling, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, opioid treatment programs and several medications each fall under a particular part of Medicare, and each part has its own costs and limits.

Indiana programs on this page report that they accept Medicare. Their details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send us. Ask each program directly whether it bills Medicare for the care you need, because acceptance can change.

Common questions about Medicare Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are Medicare rehabs in Indiana?

Listings for Indiana rehab programs that accept Medicare cluster first in Evansville, then Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Columbus and Bloomington. Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville also stand out as the larger cities nearby, so a search by someone on Medicare often starts in one of them.

Before admission, the clinic's billing staff can confirm whether Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan is accepted, since the answer can differ between programs in Indianapolis and elsewhere.

Rehab Centers in Indianapolis That Accept Medicarehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/indiana/indianapolis/medicare-rehab-indianapolis/
Do Medicare rehabs in Indiana take Indiana Medicaid?

Indiana Medicaid is also recorded as accepted by nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Indiana, which matters for dual-eligible members. Admissions staff can explain how Medicare and Indiana Medicaid are billed together and whether any costs remain after each has paid before intake is scheduled.

Rehab Centers in Indiana That Accept Indiana Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/indiana/indiana-medicaid/
Are there Medicare rehabs near a river in Indiana?

Rivers are within 25 miles of most of the rehabs that take Medicare in Indiana, with a median of about 11.6 miles from listed facilities to the nearest one. The most-named rivers are the South Fork Eel River, the Saint Marys River and the Eel River.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

Does Medicare pay for addiction treatment in Indiana?

Yes, Medicare pays for medically necessary addiction treatment in Indiana when the provider is enrolled in Medicare and the service fits a covered benefit. Original Medicare benefits are set by federal Medicare law and are the same in every state, so an Indiana enrollee has the same core coverage as someone in Ohio or Illinois.

Federal parity rules do not set these benefits. Part A covers inpatient hospital care, including medically managed withdrawal; Part B covers outpatient counseling, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care and opioid treatment program services; and Part D covers prescriptions such as buprenorphine and naltrexone tablets. Residential rehab outside a hospital usually falls outside Original Medicare.

Medicare covers more than adults 65 and older. People under 65 who receive Social Security disability benefits usually become eligible after 24 months of benefits, and people with end-stage renal disease can qualify at any age.

Provider enrollment matters as well. Since 2024, licensed marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors can enroll in Medicare, so more Indiana counseling practices may now be able to bill for outpatient care. Medicare Advantage members should still check the network and any prior authorization rules before intake.

Which parts of Medicare cover detox, outpatient care and medications?

Part A covers inpatient hospital care, Part B covers outpatient services, and Part D covers prescription medications. The table below shows how common substance use services fit into those three parts.

PartWhat it coversMain limits
Part AInpatient stays in a general or psychiatric hospital, including medically managed withdrawalDeductible for each benefit period; lifetime limit of 190 days in a freestanding psychiatric hospital
Part BOutpatient counseling, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care (added in 2024), and opioid treatment program services including methadone (added in 2020)Yearly deductible, then usually 20% coinsurance
Part DPrescriptions such as buprenorphine and naltrexone tabletsPlan formulary and copays apply, with a yearly out-of-pocket cap

Dollar amounts change every January. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to get this year’s deductibles and the current Part D cap. Indiana law bars the state from approving new opioid treatment programs, so methadone through Part B depends on programs that already operate. Indiana listings are available for detox, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, methadone clinics and Suboxone clinics.

Does Medicare cover residential rehab, and what are the options if it does not?

Original Medicare generally does not pay for residential treatment outside a hospital, and it does not pay for sober living. Many people looking at residential rehab in Indiana are surprised by this gap, so it helps to plan for other ways to pay before choosing a program.

People who have both Medicare and Indiana Medicaid can use Medicaid as a second payer. Indiana Medicaid, formally Indiana Health Coverage Programs, may cover services that Medicare leaves out. Its programs include Indiana PathWays for Aging, whose health plans are Anthem, Humana and UnitedHealthcare. Medicare Savings Programs, also run through Indiana Medicaid, can help pay Medicare premiums and cost sharing for people with limited income. Medicaid-accepting programs are listed separately.

Indiana residents without Medicaid can look at state-funded rehab, which the FSSA Division of Mental Health and Addiction helps fund through block grant and opioid settlement money. Another option is sliding scale programs that set fees by income.

How do Medicare Advantage plans in Indiana handle substance use treatment?

Medicare Advantage plans in Indiana must cover everything Original Medicare covers, but they can limit care to a provider network and require prior authorization. A program listed here may accept Original Medicare and still be out of network for a particular Advantage plan, so call the number on your plan card before intake. Prior authorization is common for inpatient stays, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care.

What to ask before admission

Questions for the admissions team should cover four points:

  • Whether the program is enrolled in Medicare.
  • Which of its services it bills to Medicare.
  • What you would pay out of pocket.
  • Whether visits can happen by video.

Medicare allows many substance use services by telehealth, including from home, and Indiana lists telehealth programs as well. Programs that list Medicare report a range of care, including withdrawal management, outpatient counseling, medication for opioid or alcohol use disorder, and treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions.

Where can people on Medicare in Indiana get free help comparing coverage?

Indiana’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program offers free, one-on-one Medicare counseling, and 1-800-MEDICARE can give you its local contact details. Counselors can compare Advantage plans, check Part D formularies for buprenorphine or naltrexone, and help you apply for a Medicare Savings Program. The national treatment referral line (1-800-662-4357) is free and open all day, and 988 answers calls and texts for anyone in crisis. Indiana 211 (dial 211 or 866-211-9966) connects callers to local services.

Reading the Indiana Medicare listings

Indiana programs listing Medicare cluster around Evansville, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. Most are in town settings (56 percent) rather than urban cores. Eighty-seven percent sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the South Fork Eel River, and the median elevation is 720 feet. The median drive to the nearest airport is 24.9 miles, a little farther than for Indiana listings overall, and Indianapolis International is the airport closest to these programs most often. Each listing reports Medicare acceptance based on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and the providers’ own details. Ask the program to confirm before you rely on it. For more ways to search, see the Indiana treatment overview or the national Medicare guide.
