Rehab Centers in Kentucky That Accept Medicare

Medicare can pay for substance use treatment in Kentucky, but only for certain services and only when the provider is enrolled in Medicare. Hospital-based withdrawal care, outpatient counseling, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, opioid treatment programs and several addiction medications each fall under a specific part of Medicare.

Kentucky programs on this page report that they accept Medicare. The information comes from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves. Nearly half of these programs, 49 percent, are in rural areas, and the largest groups are around Ashland, Mount Vernon and Elizabethtown. Confirm Medicare billing directly with any program before you plan an admission.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Common questions about Medicare Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Kentucky cities have Medicare rehabs?

Clustering is clearest in Ashland, Mount Vernon, Elizabethtown, London and Richmond, the Kentucky cities where listings for Medicare-covered rehab gather. Each listing shows the payment routes a provider records, so Medicare acceptance can be checked city by city before anyone calls intake staff to ask about openings.

Lexington, Meads and Louisville are the larger cities near these listings. Travelers coming from farther away often plan around them when arranging transport, lodging for family or a first appointment.

Rehab Centers in Ashlandhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/kentucky/ashland-ky/
Do Medicare rehabs in Kentucky take Kentucky Medicaid?

Kentucky Medicaid is also recorded as accepted by nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Kentucky. People enrolled in both programs can ask the admissions team how the two payers are billed together, which one pays first and whether any share of cost remains once both apply to a stay.

Rehab Centers in Kentucky That Accept Kentucky Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/kentucky/kentucky-medicaid/
Are there Medicare rehabs near a river in Kentucky?

Yes. Nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Kentucky are within 25 miles of a river, with a median of about 12.9 miles from listed facilities to the nearest one. The Dix River, the Salt River and Blue River Branch are the waterways named first near these listings.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

Does Medicare pay for addiction treatment in Kentucky?

Yes, Medicare pays for medically necessary substance use treatment in Kentucky when a Medicare-enrolled provider delivers a covered service. The benefits are set federally, so a Kentuckian with Original Medicare has the same coverage as someone across the river in Ohio or Indiana.

Whether a provider is enrolled matters as much as which service you need. Since 2024, licensed mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists can enroll in Medicare and bill it directly, which added outpatient clinicians who can see Medicare patients. A program can also bill some services to Medicare and charge privately for others, so ask which services fall under Medicare.

Medicare is not only for adults 65 and older. People under 65 qualify after receiving Social Security Disability Insurance for 24 months, and people with end-stage renal disease qualify as well. Some people in these groups also have Kentucky Medicaid, which is called dual eligibility. Others qualify for a Medicare Savings Program, which helps pay Part B premiums and cost sharing.

Which parts of Medicare cover detox, outpatient care and medications?

Part A covers hospital care, Part B covers outpatient services, and Part D covers prescription drugs. The table below shows how each part applies to substance use treatment.

PartSubstance use servicesCost terms
Part AInpatient stays in a general or psychiatric hospital, including medically managed withdrawalDeductible per benefit period; 190-day lifetime limit in a freestanding psychiatric hospital
Part BOutpatient therapy, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, opioid treatment program services including methadoneYearly deductible, then usually 20 percent coinsurance
Part DBuprenorphine, naltrexone tablets and other prescribed medicationsPlan copays up to a yearly out-of-pocket cap

Hospital-based detox in Kentucky is billed under Part A. Partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs are billed under Part B. Part B has covered intensive outpatient care as its own benefit since 2024, and has covered opioid treatment program services since 2020. For medication for opioid use disorder, see methadone clinics and Suboxone providers in the state. Medicare.gov lists the current year’s deductibles, coinsurance and Part D cap. These amounts change every January.

Does Medicare cover residential rehab, and what are the options if it does not?

No, Original Medicare generally does not pay for residential rehab at a program that is not a hospital, and it does not pay for sober living. This is the biggest gap between what people expect from Medicare and what it actually covers.

People with both Medicare and Kentucky Medicaid have another route. Kentucky Medicaid’s behavioral health fee schedule includes daily rates for residential treatment, including ASAM level 3.7 programs. Its managed care plans are Aetna Better Health of Kentucky, Humana Healthy Horizons in Kentucky, Passport Health Plan by Molina Healthcare, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and WellCare of Kentucky. See Medicaid rehab coverage for more on how Medicaid works with treatment programs.

People without Medicaid can look at state-funded rehab or sliding scale programs. The Adult Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Services Branch of the Kentucky Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities oversees state and federal funds for community providers.

How do Medicare Advantage plans in Kentucky handle substance use treatment?

Medicare Advantage plans in Kentucky must cover the same services as Original Medicare, but they use provider networks and often require prior authorization for higher levels of care. Seeing a provider outside the network can cost more or may not be covered at all. A listing that reports Medicare acceptance does not tell you whether the program is in your plan’s network, so call the plan and give it the program’s name and address.

Telehealth can help people who live far from a provider. Medicare allows substance use disorder treatment by telehealth, including from home, and Advantage plans may add their own rules. You can browse telehealth options in Kentucky.

What to confirm before admission

Before you start, ask intake staff:

  • whether the program and its clinicians are enrolled in Medicare
  • which services they bill to Medicare
  • what your deductible and coinsurance will be
  • whether you need prior authorization
  • whether video or phone visits are available

Where can people on Medicare in Kentucky get free help comparing coverage?

Kentucky’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as SHIP, offers free counseling on Medicare plans, Medicare Savings Programs and dual eligibility. You can also get help from these lines:

  • 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) answers questions about coverage and claims.
  • Find Help Now Kentucky, 800-854-6813, lists treatment openings.
  • The national treatment referral line, 1-800-662-4357, offers referrals to treatment.
  • 988 is available for anyone in a mental health or substance use crisis.

The Kentucky programs that list Medicare are spread across the state. Ninety-seven percent are within 25 miles of a river, most often the Dix River, at a median of 12.9 miles. Blue Grass Airport is the nearest airport for about three in ten, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 33.7 miles. Daniel Boone National Forest is the forest closest to these programs. To compare programs by city or level of care, start from the Kentucky rehab directory, and see the national Medicare rehab guide for coverage outside the state.
