Sober Living Homes in Louisiana

Sober living homes in Louisiana are shared, alcohol- and drug-free residences. People in recovery rent a room, follow house rules and support one another while they work, study or attend outpatient care. Listings here cluster around Bossier City and Baton Rouge, with others in Zachary and Lafayette. Four in five sit in town settings rather than city cores or open country.

Each listing draws on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves. Use this page to compare house rules, populations served and medication policies. Call a home directly before you commit to a move.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Louisiana cities have sober living homes?

Bossier City leads the sober living listings in Louisiana, followed by Baton Rouge, Zachary, Westminster and Monticello, in that order, based on where listed homes cluster across the state.

Larger Louisiana cities nearby include Baton Rouge, Shreveport and New Orleans. Residents often need to attend outpatient treatment, work or school while living in a sober home, so choosing a location close to those daily commitments makes the arrangement easier to keep up.

Rehab Centers in Bossier Cityhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/louisiana/bossier-city/
Does Healthy Louisiana cover sober living in Louisiana?

Healthy Louisiana is accepted by nearly all of the sober living homes in Louisiana, going by their records, so calling a home to ask about plan participation is a good first step.

Medicaid generally pays for treatment services rather than rent, so a resident may still owe a weekly or monthly housing fee even when counseling or outpatient care is billed to a Healthy Louisiana plan.

Rehab Centers in Louisiana That Accept Healthy Louisianahttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/louisiana/healthy-louisiana/
Which sober living homes in Louisiana are close to a river?

Rivers lie within 25 miles of nearly all of the sober living homes in Louisiana, with a median of about 13.3 miles from listed facilities to the nearest one. The most-named rivers near these homes are the Comite River, the Prairie River and the Raccourci Old River.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home, also called a recovery residence, is shared housing in Louisiana and elsewhere where residents agree to stay free of alcohol and drugs, and unlike rehab it is not a treatment program. Residents pay rent, do chores and attend house meetings.

Any counseling or medical care happens elsewhere, often at outpatient programs in Louisiana or intensive outpatient programs. Residential rehab works differently: a licensed program provides clinical treatment around the clock, and the stay is built around therapy rather than housing.

A correctional halfway house is another arrangement again. A corrections agency sets placement there as part of a sentence or release, and the resident does not choose it. Louisiana does not seem to have any state certification program or public registry for recovery residences, so claims about standards come from the operator.

Residents usually pay the rent themselves, and no Louisiana source confirms that Medicaid or private insurance covers it. Before moving in, ask for house rules in writing, how drug testing works, what happens after a return to use, and whether people on buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone can live there.

Are sober living homes in Louisiana certified or regulated?

Louisiana does not appear to have a state certification program or public registry for recovery residences. We also found no state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) listed for Louisiana. In other states, NARR affiliates certify homes against shared standards. Without a Louisiana affiliate, there is no official certified list to check a home against.

The Louisiana Department of Health licenses behavioral health service providers through its Health Standards Section. If a house says it offers counseling or other clinical services on site, ask whether that program holds a department license. The department’s Office of Behavioral Health points residents toward Oxford House homes, which the people living in them run themselves. Treat any claims about standards as the operator’s own description.

What do the NARR levels of support mean?

Many homes describe themselves using four NARR levels. The levels show how much staffing to expect, not how good a home is.

LevelWho runs the houseWhat to expect
I, peer-runResidents, by group decisionShared rules and house meetings, no paid staff
II, monitoredA house manager or senior residentHouse rules, drug testing, some structure
III, supervisedPaid staffScheduled life skills and recovery support
IV, service providerStaff within a licensed organizationHousing linked to that organization’s clinical services

How much does sober living cost in Louisiana, and who pays?

Residents of a Louisiana sober home usually pay the rent themselves. No state source we found sets typical prices, so ask each home for its rate in writing. Also ask whether the fee covers utilities, food, drug tests, transport or a deposit.

No Louisiana source we found confirms that Medicaid or private insurance pays sober home rent. Check with your plan and the home before counting on coverage. Treatment you receive while living in the house is a separate question. A Medicaid plan may cover outpatient care, and state-funded treatment is another route.

Louisiana’s opioid settlement funds are overseen by the Louisiana Opioid Abatement Task Force, though we found no statewide sober housing voucher tied to them. If you are in a district court drug division program, ask the court team whether housing is part of your plan. See the court-ordered rehab listings for related programs.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Ask for the house rules in writing before you sign anything or pay a deposit. Useful questions include:

  • How often is drug testing done, and who pays for it?
  • How long can residents stay?
  • What is the refund policy if you leave early?
  • What leads to discharge?

Ask what happens after a return to use. Some homes require residents to leave right away. A safer policy includes help reaching care, a place to go, and naloxone on departure.

Medication policy deserves a direct question. Ask whether the home accepts residents taking buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone for opioid use disorder, because rules vary from house to house. If you already get care from Suboxone clinics or methadone clinics in Louisiana, ask how residents travel to dosing and store medication.

What rights and safety protections apply?

Federal fair housing law generally protects people in recovery who are not currently using illegal drugs from housing discrimination. A local fair housing organization or the federal housing department can explain how to file a complaint.

Lowered tolerance after time without opioids raises overdose risk if use returns, so ask whether naloxone is kept in the house. Under a statewide standing order dated January 1, 2026, any pharmacy licensed by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy can dispense naloxone to residents, family and friends, with training. Louisiana’s Good Samaritan law, La. R.S. 14:403.10, protects people who seek medical help in good faith for an overdose from possession charges.

How do you find a sober living home in Louisiana?

Start with the listings below and filter by gender, medication policy, populations served, location and languages. Separate options exist for men and women who also need treatment.

Sober living listings in Louisiana sit close to water. Of the listings, 93 percent are within 25 miles of a river, most often the Comite River, at a median of 13.3 miles. Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport is the nearest airport for two in five listings, and the median distance to the closest airport is 9.4 miles. Elevations are low, with a median of 70 feet.

The Louisiana Substance Use Helpline, 877-664-2248, can help with housing and treatment questions. For other care types across the state, browse the Louisiana page. To learn how recovery housing works nationwide, read the sober living homes guide.
