State Funded Rehab Centers in Louisiana

State-funded rehab in Louisiana means drug and alcohol treatment paid for with public money, meant for residents who have no insurance or not enough of it. The Office of Behavioral Health, part of the Louisiana Department of Health, directs that money to licensed providers. Much of the work runs through the regional human services districts and authorities that serve each parish.

Below you’ll find how the funding works, how to get in, who is seen first when there is a wait, and when Louisiana Medicaid makes more sense as a first step. Listings draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details providers send us. Call any program to confirm what it offers today.

Common questions about State Funded Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Louisiana cities have state-funded rehabs?

State-funded rehab in Louisiana is listed most heavily in Bossier City, New Orleans, Lake Charles, Slidell and Baton Rouge. People living outside those communities may still find publicly funded programs within reach of Baton Rouge, New Orleans or Slidell, which act as wider hubs for travel and services across the southern part of the state.

Rehab Centers in Bossier Cityhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/louisiana/bossier-city/
Do state-funded rehabs in Louisiana take Healthy Louisiana?

Healthy Louisiana is recorded by most of the state-funded rehabs in Louisiana, so people eligible for Medicaid may be able to use that coverage instead of relying on public grant funds alone. Asking the admissions team which payment routes a program accepts is a useful start.

Plans include AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana, Humana and Louisiana Healthcare Connections. Coverage runs through whichever plan the member is enrolled in, so confirming that plan with intake staff first is sensible.

Rehab Centers in Louisiana That Accept Healthy Louisianahttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/louisiana/healthy-louisiana/
Are there state-funded rehabs near a river in Louisiana?

The Comite River, Prairie River and River aux Chenes are the most-named rivers near state-funded rehab in Louisiana. A river lies within 25 miles of most of the state-funded rehabs in Louisiana, and the median distance from listed facilities to the nearest one is about 9.7 miles.

How does state-funded addiction treatment work in Louisiana?

Louisiana’s Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) pays licensed providers to treat residents who can’t cover the cost, using a mix of federal and state money. The largest federal source is the Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services Block Grant, which OBH administers. State funds add to that grant. Community programs are run by local governing entities, the human services districts and authorities that cover groups of parishes. You can read more about this payment type on our national state-funded treatment page.

Opioid settlement money is a separate stream. The Louisiana Opioid Abatement Task Force advises on how those funds are spent across the state, parishes and sheriffs. Settlement funds are not something an individual applies to.

Public and private programs in Louisiana follow the same licensing rules. The Louisiana Department of Health’s Health Standards Section licenses behavioral health service providers under LAC 48:I, Chapters 56 and 57. Where a listing reports accreditation, you’ll see it on the listing.

How do I apply for state-funded treatment in Louisiana?

The Louisiana Substance Use Helpline at 877-664-2248, listed by the Office of Behavioral Health, is the simplest first call for an uninsured resident. Staff can point you to the human services district or authority for your parish.

Louisiana does not publish a single statewide income limit for state-funded treatment in the sources we read. Each program and local entity applies its own rules on residency, income and insurance status. Intake staff may ask for:

a photo ID; something showing a Louisiana address; recent pay stubs or benefit letters; any insurance or Medicaid card; a list of current medications; and court papers, if a judge referred you.

Young people in Louisiana can seek drug treatment without a parent’s signature. Under La. R.S. 40:1079.2, a minor of any age who is, or believes they are, addicted to a narcotic or other drug can consent to care from a hospital, public clinic or physician.

Is there a waitlist, and who gets priority in Louisiana?

Waits for publicly funded care can happen, and federal block grant rules set who moves to the front. OBH lists the order of priority as follows:

  • pregnant women who inject drugs
  • other pregnant women with substance use
  • other people who inject drugs

Programs that can’t offer care within 48 hours must provide interim services while you wait. These include counseling, education on infection risks and, for pregnant people, referral to prenatal care. Programs focused on this group appear on our rehab for pregnant women in Louisiana page.

Callers can reach 988 by call or text at any hour. The national treatment referral line can suggest other open programs in Louisiana.

What if I qualify for Louisiana Medicaid instead?

Louisiana expanded Medicaid in 2016, so many uninsured adults now qualify and should apply first. Expanded benefits began July 1, 2016. Healthy Louisiana, the Medicaid managed care system, covers specialized behavioral health services, including treatment for substance use.

The 2026 plans are Aetna Better Health, AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana, Healthy Blue, Humana and Louisiana Healthcare Connections. Healthy Blue leaves at the end of 2026. State funding generally fills the gap for people who don’t qualify for Medicaid or whose coverage falls short. Programs that take Medicaid are listed under Medicaid-accepted treatment.

Fees based on income are listed on our sliding scale rehab in Louisiana page. Programs that report no-cost care are on the free rehab in Louisiana page.

Where are state-funded programs in Louisiana, and how do I read the listings?

Louisiana listings that report state funding lean toward towns rather than big cities. Our mapping puts 65 percent in town settings, 21 percent rural and 14 percent urban. Bossier City, New Orleans, Lake Charles, Slidell and Baton Rouge show up most often. Close to three in four, 73 percent, sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the Comite River near Baton Rouge. The median distance to the nearest airport is 15.6 miles, and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International is the airport nearest to the largest share.

Levels of care listed alongside state funding in Louisiana include detox, residential care, outpatient programs and opioid treatment programs. In Louisiana, opioid treatment programs answer to OBH as the State Opioid Treatment Authority.

Recovery housing

The Office of Behavioral Health points Louisiana residents to Oxford House homes, which residents run themselves. We did not find a state certification program for recovery residences in the sources we read. Options appear under sober living in Louisiana.

Recovery court referrals

Louisiana’s district courts run drug divisions under La. R.S. 13:5301 and the sections that follow. The Louisiana Supreme Court Drug and Specialty Court Office sets the measures these divisions use. Programs that take referrals are on our court-ordered rehab in Louisiana page. Every treatment type in the state is in the Louisiana treatment directory.
