Court Ordered Rehab Centers in Maine

A Maine court order for treatment can come from a sentencing judge, a probation condition, an Adult Drug Treatment Court, or an OUI case sent through the state’s Driver Education and Evaluation Programs. Each route sets its own terms, so start with the order itself: the level of care, the start date and who receives progress reports.

Listings on this page show Maine programs that say they accept court-referred clients. The details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and the providers themselves. RehabSeekers.com cannot say whether a court will accept a given program. The judge, your attorney or the supervising officer decides that.

Common questions about Court Ordered Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Maine cities have court ordered rehabs?

Bangor, Portland, Brewer, Ellsworth and Lewiston are where court ordered rehab listings in Maine cluster, in that order. Portland, Bangor and Lewiston are also the state's largest nearby cities. Because courts often set conditions on attendance and reporting, asking a program early whether it sends progress reports to probation or the court is useful.

Rehab Centers in Bangorhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maine/bangor-me/
Does MaineCare cover court ordered rehab in Maine?

Ask the program to confirm MaineCare enrollment before intake, since nearly all of the court ordered rehab programs in Maine record accepting it. MaineCare runs on a fee-for-service basis rather than through managed care plans, so no separate health plan needs checking; coverage depends on eligibility and the services the court requires.

Rehab Centers in Maine That Accept MaineCarehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maine/mainecare/
Are there court ordered rehabs near a river in Maine?

River settings lie close to court ordered rehab in Maine: nearly all of the court ordered rehab programs in Maine sit within 25 miles of one, at a median of about 5.3 miles. The most-named are Stillwater River, Little Androscoggin River and Fore River.

For someone on a court order, schedule and reporting matter as much as setting, so checking travel time from each program to required court dates and sessions is worthwhile.

How does a court order someone into treatment in Maine?

A court in Maine can order someone into treatment through a criminal case, a treatment court, an operating under the influence (OUI) conviction, or a separate civil hospitalization process. Within a criminal case, treatment can be attached to a sentence, to probation terms or to a pretrial deal agreed by both sides.

Treatment courts are one common route. As of January 2022, Adult Drug Treatment Courts were operating in 15 of the state’s 16 counties, according to the Maine Judicial Branch, and a court clerk or defense attorney can say whether one runs locally now. People convicted of OUI follow their own track through a state-required education and treatment program run by the Office of Behavioral Health.

Civil involuntary hospitalization is a different matter. Maine has no commitment law written only for substance misuse; instead, its involuntary hospitalization law counts the effects of drugs or alcohol within its definition of mental illness, making this a civil mental health process rather than a criminal sentence. A lawyer can explain how it applies.

Whether a program meets the terms of an order is for the court or supervising officer to decide, and holding a state license is only a first test. Under federal confidentiality rules, a program generally needs your signed consent before reporting attendance or progress to a judge, so ask the admissions team what letters and reports they send and how often.

Criminal cases, treatment courts and OUI

A judge may make treatment a condition of a sentence, of probation, or of a pretrial agreement between the prosecution and the defense. As of January 2022, the Maine Judicial Branch reported Adult Drug Treatment Courts in 15 of the state’s 16 counties. The court clerk or your attorney can tell you whether one runs in your county now.

Maine OUI cases follow their own track. State law (5 MRSA chapter 521) requires the Driver Education and Evaluation Programs, or DEEP, for OUI offenders. DEEP is run by the Office of Behavioral Health in Maine DHHS and offers education, treatment and counseling, including the Risk Reduction Program. Programs listing OUI services appear under DUI and DWI programs in Maine.

Civil involuntary hospitalization

Maine has no separate civil commitment law written only for substance use. Instead, the involuntary hospitalization law in Title 34-B, chapter 3 defines a mentally ill person to include someone suffering effects from drugs, narcotics, hallucinogens or intoxicants, including alcohol (34-B MRSA 3801). That route is a civil mental health process, not a criminal sentence, and a lawyer can explain how it works.

Will a Maine court accept any licensed treatment program?

Not automatically. The court or supervising officer decides which programs satisfy an order, and a state license is only the starting point. The Maine DHHS Division of Licensing and Certification issues the Substance Use Disorder Treatment Agency license, and the Office of Behavioral Health oversees treatment statewide. Before you enroll, ask the program for its license details and pass them to your attorney or probation officer.

Reporting to the court needs your written consent. Under the federal confidentiality rules known as 42 CFR Part 2, a program generally cannot share your attendance or progress with a judge or officer unless you sign a consent that names who receives what. Ask the admissions team whether they send attendance letters and progress reports, and how often.

Medication for opioid use disorder is worth raising early. Each Maine treatment court sets its own rules on methadone or buprenorphine, so ask the court coordinator or your attorney. Office of Behavioral Health policy requires certified recovery residences to accept people receiving medication. Listings, including Suboxone clinics in Maine, show accreditation, languages and populations served where providers supply them.

What levels of care can a Maine court require?

A Maine court can require any level of care. Many orders call for an assessment first, then treatment at the recommended level for a minimum period.

Level of careWhat it usually means
DetoxSupervised withdrawal; withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be medically serious
ResidentialLiving on site for a set number of weeks
Partial hospitalizationTreatment most of the day on weekdays, sleeping at home
Intensive outpatientSeveral sessions a week around work or family
OutpatientRegular counseling, often as a step down

Each level has its own Maine listings: detox, residential rehab, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient rehab.

Getting to sessions across Maine often means driving. Of the listed court-referral programs, 53 percent sit in towns and 45 percent in rural areas. Every listing lies within 25 miles of a river, a median of 5.3 miles, and the Stillwater River is the one most often nearest. The median distance to an airport is 7.1 miles. Portland International Jetport is the most common nearest airport, and 84 percent of listings are within 30 miles of one.

How do you pay for court-ordered treatment in Maine?

Court-ordered treatment in Maine is paid much like voluntary care: through MaineCare, state-funded services, private insurance or a sliding fee. MaineCare is run by the Office of MaineCare Services. It covers adults up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level under the expansion that began covering new enrollees in January 2019. MaineCare also covers telehealth for substance use treatment. You can find programs that take Medicaid on a separate page.

If you have no coverage, look for state-funded rehab in Maine or sliding scale fees. Federal block grant rules give pregnant women preference in admission to block-grant-funded programs. Veterans can ask the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta about care. Whether you or the court pays depends on the order.

What happens if you miss sessions on a Maine treatment order?

The judge decides what happens after missed sessions, and the response varies by case and by court. Ask your attorney or supervising officer what your order allows. If you have a transport or scheduling problem, tell them before a session is missed.

2-1-1 Maine connects callers with treatment: dial 211, or 1-877-463-6207 from out of state. You can call or text 988 in a crisis, and the national treatment referral line can point you to local services. More options are on the Maine locations page and in the national court-ordered rehab guide.
