DUI and DWI Programs in Maine

Maine law uses the term OUI, operating under the influence, for what many states call DUI or DWI. The program required after an OUI is run by the state. Driver Education and Evaluation Programs, known as DEEP, sit within the Office of Behavioral Health at the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. DEEP combines education with evaluation and, where needed, treatment.

RehabSeekers.com lists Maine providers that report serving people referred after an OUI, from weekly counseling to residential care. In this group, 60 percent are in rural areas and 40 percent in towns. Every one is within 25 miles of a river, a median of 3.5 miles away.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about DUI and DWI Programs

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are DUI programs in Maine?

DUI and DWI programs in Maine are listed most heavily in Lewiston, Brewer, Belfast, Ellsworth and Portland. Drivers asked by a court or the state to complete an evaluation or treatment can start their search in whichever of those towns sits closest to home.

Portland, Bangor and Lewiston are the larger cities nearby. Drivers in rural counties often look toward one of them for added choice, especially when appointments have to fit around work and travel.

Rehab Centers in Lewistonhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maine/lewiston-me/
Do DUI programs in Maine take MaineCare?

MaineCare is accepted by nearly all of the DUI and DWI programs in Maine, according to their listings. Because MaineCare pays providers directly on a fee-for-service basis rather than through managed care plans, no separate health plan needs checking. Members can confirm coverage for an evaluation or treatment before the first appointment.

Rehab Centers in Maine That Accept MaineCarehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maine/mainecare/
Are there DUI programs near a river in Maine?

Stillwater River leads the rivers named near Maine DUI and DWI program listings, ahead of the Little Androscoggin River and the Passagassawakeag River. Programs sit a median of about 3.5 miles from the nearest river, and nearly all of the DUI and DWI programs in Maine have a river within 25 miles.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What DUI or DWI program does Maine require, and who runs it?

Maine requires DEEP for people with an OUI. State law sets DEEP up as an OUI countermeasure program (5 MRSA chapter 521), and the Maine DHHS Office of Behavioral Health runs it. DEEP offers education, treatment and counseling, including the Risk Reduction Program.

The education course and clinical treatment are different things. The course teaches about alcohol, other drugs and driving. Treatment is care for a substance use disorder. In Maine it comes from programs licensed by the DHHS Division of Licensing and Certification as Substance Use Disorder Treatment Agencies. A RehabSeekers.com listing does not show whether a provider takes part in DEEP, so ask DEEP or the program directly.

Hour counts for first and repeat offenses on older websites may be out of date. Ask DEEP which track applies to you and how many hours it requires.

How does a DEEP evaluation decide which program or treatment you need in Maine?

The DEEP evaluation looks at how alcohol or other drugs affect your life, and its result points to the next step. That step may be education alone, or education followed by treatment. Ask DEEP who does the evaluation in your area, what it costs, and how the recommendation will be shared with you and the court.

When treatment is recommended, Maine providers in these listings report several levels of care:

Level of careWhat it usually involves
OutpatientScheduled counseling while you live at home
Intensive outpatientSeveral sessions a week, several hours each
ResidentialLiving on site for a period of care
MedicationMedication for alcohol or opioid use disorder alongside counseling

Medication and counseling for drinking are listed on the alcohol rehab in Maine page.

A judge can also order treatment as part of a sentence. The Maine Judicial Branch reported Adult Drug Treatment Courts in 15 of 16 counties as of January 2022. Providers that work with these referrals appear under court-ordered rehab in Maine.

Can you complete a DUI or DWI program online in Maine?

Check with DEEP before paying for any online OUI course. An internet course sold for general use may not count in Maine, and the court or DEEP has the final say on what satisfies your requirement.

Treatment is a separate question. MaineCare covers telehealth visits, including substance use disorder treatment, and phone appointments can count at the provider’s discretion. Providers offering remote care are on the telehealth rehab in Maine page. Confirm first that remote sessions meet your court or DEEP terms.

How do you pay for a DUI program or court-ordered treatment in Maine?

DEEP sets the course and evaluation fees, so ask DEEP for the current amounts rather than trusting older quotes online. Treatment costs are billed separately.

MaineCare, the state Medicaid program, expanded to more adults in 2019. The federal Medicaid listing puts the adult income limit at 133 percent of the poverty level. Providers that take it are on the Medicaid rehab page.

Other options include private insurance, sliding fee scales in Maine and state-funded rehab in Maine. Each listing shows the payment types the provider reports. Many listings also note Spanish-language or interpreter services, so ask about language support when you call.

What happens after you finish the program, and how do you get your license back?

Finishing DEEP is one part of getting a Maine license back, not the whole process. Ask DEEP how completion is reported toward reinstatement. Also ask whether your case carries other conditions, such as an ignition interlock, and confirm the remaining steps with the state motor vehicle office. Nothing on this page is legal advice, and completing a program does not promise any outcome in court.

What to bring and ask when you call a provider

Bring your court paperwork, your DEEP evaluation results and any deadline you were given. Ask the admissions team whether it sends proof of completion to DEEP or the court, and how quickly. Ask about cost, insurance and language services too.

Where to get help now

The national treatment referral line is free and confidential. 2-1-1 Maine connects callers to treatment by dialing 211, or 1-877-463-6207 from out of state. In a crisis, call or text 988.

Maine’s OUI-related listings sit close to water and travel links. Most are within 25 miles of the coast, a median of 16.9 miles away. Augusta State Airport is the most common nearest airport, ahead of Presque Isle International and Portland International Jetport, at a median of 11.9 miles. The rivers nearby, most often the Stillwater and the Little Androscoggin, are on the rivers page.

Listing details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send us. Contact each program to confirm what it offers. You can browse all rehab programs in Maine, with Lewiston, Brewer, Belfast, Ellsworth and Portland among the towns that appear most often.
