Inpatient Rehab Centers in Maine

Inpatient rehab on this page means 24-hour treatment for drug and alcohol use in Maine. It does not cover physical rehabilitation after a stroke, surgery or injury. Searches for inpatient rehab often return rehabilitation hospitals, so it helps to know the difference before you make a call.

Listings on RehabSeekers.com draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details sent in by the providers themselves. Each listing shows the levels of care, payment types, insurers, accreditation, languages and populations a program reports. You can use these details to compare inpatient options across Maine side by side.

Common questions about Inpatient Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are inpatient rehabs in Maine?

Bangor leads the list of Maine places with inpatient rehab listings, followed by Portland, Rockport, Brunswick Station and Fort Kent. Bangor, Portland and Rockland are the larger cities closest to these programs. Knowing which hub sits nearest a listing can help families plan visits, overnight stays or travel on admission day.

Rehab Centers in Bangorhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maine/bangor-me/
Does MaineCare cover inpatient rehab in Maine?

MaineCare members find it accepted by nearly all of the inpatient rehabs in Maine, and because the program runs on fee-for-service rather than managed care, there is no separate health plan to choose. Intake staff can confirm whether a particular stay qualifies under the state program.

Rehab Centers in Maine That Accept MaineCarehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maine/mainecare/
Are there inpatient rehabs near a river in Maine?

Rivers sit close to inpatient programs in Maine: a median of about 3.2 miles separates a program from the nearest river, and nearly all of the inpatient rehabs in Maine have one within 25 miles, measured from each program's own location.

The Stillwater River, the Stroudwater River and the Megunticook River are the most-named rivers near inpatient programs in Maine. Travelers can ask admissions teams which river lies nearest a given listing.

What does inpatient treatment for substance use look like in Maine?

Inpatient treatment in Maine is round-the-clock care with nursing and medical staff on site, in either a hospital unit or a program built for medically monitored care.

Listed inpatient programs in Maine sit in towns (57 percent) or rural areas (43 percent), and none are classed as urban. Every listed program lies within 25 miles of a river, at a median of 3.2 miles, and the Stillwater River near Bangor is the most common. Most listed programs (86 percent) are within 25 miles of the coast.

Bangor International Airport and Portland International Jetport are the most common nearest airports, at a median of 5.9 miles from a listed program. That matters for families coming from Aroostook, Washington and other far-off counties. You can browse all care types on the Maine treatment page.

Maine DHHS licenses substance use treatment programs through the Behavioral Health Program in its Division of Licensing and Certification. The license is titled Substance Use Disorder Treatment Agency. Before admission, ask intake staff which license the program holds, then check it with the division directly. Statewide treatment policy is set by the Office of Behavioral Health in Maine DHHS.

Program listings show whether a provider reports:

  • hospital-based withdrawal management
  • psychiatric care
  • medications for opioid or alcohol use disorder, such as buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone

For more on each, see detox in Maine, dual diagnosis programs and opioid treatment in Maine.

How is inpatient care different from residential treatment?

Inpatient care is medically managed or medically monitored 24-hour treatment. Residential care is a live-in setting with clinical staff and usually less medical oversight.

The ASAM Criteria are the placement framework most US programs use. They put hospital-based, medically managed care at the highest intensity level, with medically monitored care just below it. Some providers use “inpatient” and “residential” as if they mean the same thing, so ask what level of care a stay is billed as.

SettingMedical staffingUsual focus
Medically managed inpatient (hospital)Physicians and nurses around the clockSevere withdrawal, medical or psychiatric complications
Medically monitored inpatient24-hour nursing, physician availableWithdrawal and early stabilization
ResidentialClinical staff on site, lighter medical coverStructured treatment and daily routines

Residential listings have their own page: residential rehab in Maine.

Will Medicare, MaineCare or private insurance pay for an inpatient stay?

Coverage depends on your plan and on medical necessity. No insurer pays every inpatient claim automatically.

Medicare Part A is Medicare’s hospital insurance. It can cover a medically necessary inpatient hospital stay for substance use or psychiatric care, with its usual deductible and limits. See Medicare rehab in Maine for more.

MaineCare is Maine’s Medicaid program, run by the Office of MaineCare Services. It covers adults with incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level. In 2025 legislative testimony, MaineCare was described as one of five state Medicaid programs still paid fee-for-service, so claims go to MaineCare itself rather than to a managed care plan. You can compare programs that list Medicaid.

Private plans and MaineCare often require prior authorization for inpatient days. Approval may come in short blocks that are reviewed as treatment goes on, so ask the admissions team to check your benefits before you arrive.

If you have no insurance, you have a few options:

  • Ask about state-funded or grant-funded beds overseen by the Office of Behavioral Health.
  • Dial 211 to reach 2-1-1 Maine for help finding one.
  • Browse state-funded rehab in Maine.

Pregnant women get admission preference at programs funded by the federal block grant.

How long does an inpatient stay for substance use usually last?

An inpatient stay is usually measured in days, sometimes a week or two. That is shorter than most residential programs, and medical need sets the length rather than a fixed calendar.

Listings show length of stay where a provider reports it. Your insurer’s authorization may shape the stay as well.

Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures. Anyone who uses either regularly needs a medical assessment before stopping suddenly. In an emergency, call 911. For a mental health or suicidal crisis, call or text 988.

Maine law lets a licensed hospital or treatment program treat a minor for substance use without a parent’s consent. If a hospitalization lasts more than 16 hours, the program must notify a parent and get consent.

What happens after an inpatient stay ends?

Discharge planning starts during the stay and arranges the next level of care before you leave.

Common next steps after an inpatient stay include:

Recovery residences in Maine must be certified by the Maine Association of Recovery Residences. They must also accept people taking medication for opioid use disorder. See sober living in Maine.

To get the most from these listings, filter by payment type, insurer, accreditation, language and the populations each program reports serving. Then call to confirm current openings and level of care. For background on how inpatient care works nationally, see the inpatient treatment guide.
