Court Ordered Rehab Centers in Maryland

Court ordered rehab in Maryland usually begins in a criminal case. The order can come from a sentence, a probation condition, a problem-solving court docket, a DUI conviction, or a commitment for treatment under Health-General 8-507. The programs on this page are ones whose providers say they accept people referred by a court, and each listing shows level of care, payment options and accreditation.

Listing details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send us. Just over half of these programs are in urban areas, 37 percent are in towns and 9 percent are rural. Frederick, Salisbury, Columbia and Westminster appear most often.

Common questions about Court Ordered Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are court ordered rehabs in Maryland?

Court ordered rehab listings in Maryland cluster in Frederick, Salisbury, Columbia, Westminster and Hagerstown, making those cities a sensible starting point for anyone comparing programs across the state.

People living near Baltimore, Waldorf or Washington can also find programs within reach. Before choosing one, ask the court or a probation officer whether it meets the terms of the order, then ask intake staff whether they can send attendance reports.

Rehab Centers in Frederickhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maryland/frederick/
Is court ordered rehab covered by Maryland Medicaid?

Carelon Behavioral Health runs the Maryland Public Behavioral Health System for Maryland Medicaid, and specialty substance use disorder care is handled through that system. Nearly all of the court ordered rehab programs in Maryland record accepting Maryland Medicaid.

Members enrolled in a HealthChoice plan such as Priority Partners, Maryland Physicians Care or MedStar Family Choice still have their addiction treatment managed through Carelon. Ask the admissions team how they bill before intake begins.

Rehab Centers in Maryland That Accept Maryland Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maryland/maryland-medicaid/
Are there court ordered rehabs near a river in Maryland?

Within 25 miles of nearly all of the court ordered rehab programs in Maryland is a river, with a median of about 10.3 miles to the closest one. The most-named are the South Branch Patapsco River, the Middle Patuxent River and the Monocacy River. Miles are counted from each court ordered program's listed address.

How does a court order someone into treatment in Maryland?

A Maryland court can require treatment through four main routes: sentencing or probation, a problem-solving court, a DUI conviction, or a commitment under Health-General 8-507. Treatment is often a condition of probation, and some cases are handled through pretrial diversion. Diversion terms are set case by case, so eligibility and outcomes are not the same for everyone.

Maryland’s problem-solving courts are run through the Problem-Solving Courts office in the Administrative Office of the Courts. These programs operate in 23 of the state’s 24 jurisdictions. The types of dockets differ from county to county, so a court clerk or defense attorney can tell you which ones run locally.

Health-General 8-507 lets a judge commit a criminal defendant with an alcohol or drug dependency to the Maryland Department of Health for treatment. The commitment can last from 72 hours up to one year. For DUI cases, a conviction under Transportation Article 21-902 can lead to an order under Criminal Procedure 6-219 to attend a DUI Education Program licensed under COMAR 10.63.05.05. That program runs at least six weekly two-hour sessions and requires a substance use assessment unless you had one in the previous 45 days. Programs offering this are on the Maryland DUI and DWI programs page.

Is civil commitment the same thing?

Civil commitment is a separate legal process from any order made in a criminal case. State sources used for this page did not show a Maryland civil commitment law specific to substance use. Health-General 8-507 applies to criminal defendants, so it should not be read as a civil option for a family member. An attorney can explain what applies in a particular situation. The national guide to court ordered treatment covers the general differences.

Will a Maryland court accept any licensed treatment program?

A license alone does not settle it. The judge, the probation agent or the problem-solving court team decides which programs satisfy an order, so ask them before you enroll. RehabSeekers.com cannot say whether a court will accept a given program.

The Behavioral Health Administration in the Maryland Department of Health licenses community-based behavioral health programs under COMAR 10.63. It issues both accreditation-based and non-accreditation-based licenses. Ask the admissions team for its license type and number, then pass those details to your attorney or supervising officer.

Court reporting needs your written consent. Federal confidentiality rules at 42 CFR Part 2 require a signed form before a program can send attendance or progress information to a judge or officer. The form names who receives the information and what can be shared. Ask intake staff whether they send reports to courts, how often, and in what format.

What levels of care can a Maryland court require?

A Maryland order often calls for an assessment first, followed by a named level of care and sometimes a minimum length. The wording depends on the judge and the case.

Level of careWhat it usually means
DetoxMedically monitored withdrawal. Withdrawal can be medically serious, especially from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids.
ResidentialLiving on site, with treatment through the day
PHPMost of the day, most weekdays, sleeping at home
IOPSeveral sessions a week, a few hours each
OutpatientScheduled counseling, often weekly

Can you take medication for opioid use disorder under a court order?

Ask the problem-solving court team or your supervising officer directly. A court or agency source on Maryland’s rule for its specialty courts was not available for this page. Opioid treatment programs in Maryland are regulated by the State Opioid Treatment Authority within the Behavioral Health Administration. Programs offering this care are on the Maryland methadone clinics page.

How do you pay for court-ordered treatment in Maryland?

Court-ordered treatment in Maryland can be paid for through Maryland Medicaid, state-funded openings, sliding-scale fees or private insurance, depending on the program. Each listing shows the options its provider accepts.

Maryland Medicaid is also called Medical Assistance, and the state expanded it in 2014. Physical health care runs through HealthChoice managed care plans. Specialty behavioral health care, including substance use treatment, is administered separately by Carelon Behavioral Health within the Public Behavioral Health System. Programs that take it are on the Medicaid rehab page.

The Behavioral Health Administration also oversees federal block grant funding for substance use services. Ask about publicly funded openings through state-funded rehab in Maryland, or look at sliding-scale programs if you have no coverage.

What happens if you miss sessions on a Maryland treatment order?

The judge decides what follows a missed session, and the response varies by case and by court. If you know you will miss a session, tell your attorney or supervising officer before it happens and ask what to do. Keep any attendance records the program gives you.

For support at any hour, call or text 988. The Behavioral Health Administration’s help page lists 988 and the Maryland Department of Health general line, 410-767-6500. The national treatment referral line can also suggest programs near you.

When comparing listings, filter by accreditation, languages spoken and populations served. Location may also matter for regular attendance. In Maryland, 96 percent of these programs sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the South Branch Patapsco River. Baltimore/Washington International is the most common nearest airport, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 12.2 miles. For every program type in the state, start from the Maryland rehab directory.
