Teen Rehab Centers in Maryland

Maryland law treats a teenager’s request for drug or alcohol treatment much like an adult’s, and that changes how many families begin the search. Teen programs listed here range from weekly outpatient sessions to residential stays. Most cluster around Baltimore and the Washington suburbs, with thinner options on the Eastern Shore and in western Maryland.

Listings draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and information the providers send in themselves. Each listing shows the levels of care, ages accepted, payment options and family services a provider reports, so families can compare programs and then call intake staff with their own questions.

Common questions about Teen Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are teen rehabs in Maryland?

Teen rehab listings in Maryland cluster in Frederick, followed by Westminster, Salisbury, Glen Burnie and Lake Arbor, in that order. Families can start with the place nearest home or school.

Baltimore, Waldorf and Washington are larger cities nearby, and families willing to drive a little farther can check those areas too, weighing travel time for family sessions and school schedules against the program features they want.

Rehab Centers in Frederickhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maryland/frederick/
Is teen rehab covered by Maryland Medicaid?

Nearly all of the teen rehabs in Maryland record accepting Maryland Medicaid, which covers children and teenagers in eligible households. Families can confirm acceptance with intake staff before a first appointment.

Addiction and mental health care for Medicaid members is handled outside the HealthChoice health plans, through Carelon Behavioral Health, which administers the Maryland Public Behavioral Health System under Maryland Department of Health regulations.

Rehab Centers in Maryland That Accept Maryland Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maryland/maryland-medicaid/
Are there teen rehabs near a river in Maryland?

Nearly all of the teen rehabs in Maryland sit within 25 miles of a river, and the nearest one lies a median of about 10 miles from listed facilities. The most-named rivers are the South Branch Patapsco River, the Middle Patuxent River and the Hawlings River.

Can a teen get substance use treatment without a parent’s consent in Maryland?

Yes, a teen in Maryland can get treatment for drug or alcohol use without a parent’s consent: a minor has the same legal capacity as an adult to consent, and the statute sets no minimum age. The rule appears in Health-General 20-102(c).

The same law also limits a teen’s choice in the other direction. Under 20-102(c-1), a teen cannot refuse certified inpatient or intensive outpatient treatment that a parent has consented to, so in practice a teen can seek outpatient help alone while a parent can still arrange a more intensive certified program.

Federal confidentiality rules for substance use disorder treatment records add a second layer for Maryland families. When a minor consents to care alone, those rules generally give the teen a say over what is shared, including with parents, though how they apply depends on the case.

Admissions teams can explain what parents are told, what needs the teen’s written permission, and what staff do if they believe a teen is in danger. For eligible teens, public coverage comes through Maryland Medicaid, known as Medical Assistance, and school counselors, pediatricians and juvenile courts are common starting points for a referral.

What kinds of treatment programs are there for teens in Maryland?

Maryland teen listings cover outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential care and detox. Each provider sets its own age range, so read the ages field on every listing before calling.

Level of careWhat it usually involves
OutpatientScheduled counseling, often after school
Intensive outpatientSeveral sessions a week while living at home
Partial hospitalizationMost of the day, home at night
ResidentialLiving on site with daily structure
DetoxMedical support during withdrawal

Teen programs in Maryland lean urban. Of the listings, 53 percent are in urban areas, 37 percent in towns and 10 percent in rural places, and Frederick, Westminster and Salisbury come up most often. Almost all of them, 97 percent, sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the South Branch Patapsco River. For four in five, the nearest airport is a major one, usually BWI. The median distance to the nearest airport is 12.7 miles, which helps when family visit from out of state.

Family involvement and languages appear on Maryland listings when a provider reports them. Look for family therapy, parent sessions or family weekends. Programs that serve Spanish speakers are gathered on the Spanish-speaking rehab page. Teens with a mental health condition alongside substance use may fit a program on the dual diagnosis list.

Will my teen keep up with school during treatment in Maryland?

Schooling during residential or partial hospitalization care depends on the program, so ask before admission. Useful questions include whether teachers work on site, whether staff coordinate with the teen’s home school district, and how credits carry over afterward. Where a provider lists academic services, the listing shows it.

Does Medicaid or CHIP pay for teen treatment in Maryland?

Maryland Medicaid, also called Medical Assistance, is the public coverage route for eligible teens, and its managed care program is HealthChoice. Specialty substance use and mental health care runs separately from the HealthChoice plans. Carelon Behavioral Health administers the Maryland Public Behavioral Health System, so treatment questions often go to that system rather than to the plan named on the card. Eligibility for children’s Medicaid and CHIP-funded coverage depends on household income and size. The Maryland Department of Health can tell a family whether a teen qualifies.

Programs that take public coverage are listed under Medicaid rehab. Families with private insurance can ask intake staff to run benefits before the first visit. Families without coverage can look at sliding scale programs in Maryland, where fees follow income.

How can you tell if a teen program in Maryland is licensed?

Maryland’s Behavioral Health Administration, part of the Maryland Department of Health, licenses community-based behavioral health programs under COMAR 10.63, so ask any teen program for its license. The administration issues both accreditation-based and non-accreditation-based licenses. Ask which type the program holds and whether it covers the ages and level of care your teen needs. Certification also matters because the parental consent rule in 20-102(c-1) applies to certified programs.

Wilderness programs and therapeutic boarding schools are a different category from licensed treatment. Some hold a behavioral health license and some do not. A program based outside Maryland answers to another state’s rules, or sometimes to none. Ask who licenses the program, whether licensed clinicians provide the treatment, and how often families can speak with their teen.

Who can help a Maryland family find a teen program?

School counselors, pediatricians and juvenile courts are the usual starting points for a teen referral in Maryland. A pediatrician can screen a teen and suggest a level of care. The Maryland Judiciary’s Problem-Solving Courts office oversees programs in 23 of the state’s 24 jurisdictions, and a court contact can say what options exist for young people locally. Maryland has no separate state substance use helpline. The Behavioral Health Administration points families to 988 and to its Maryland Behavioral Health Connect directory.

If a teen talks about self-harm or may have overdosed, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988. Maryland’s Good Samaritan law, Criminal Procedure 1-210, protects people who seek help in good faith during an overdose from arrest or prosecution for listed violations. Under a statewide standing order, naloxone is also available at any Maryland pharmacy without a prescription.

To compare options, start with the Maryland treatment overview, or see teen rehab nationwide. Then call two or three programs with your questions about consent, school and payment.
