Alcohol Rehab Centers in Massachusetts

Alcohol rehab in Massachusetts ranges from short, medically managed withdrawal care to residential programs, partial hospitalization and weekly outpatient counseling. The Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS), part of the Department of Public Health, licenses treatment programs in the state and funds care for people who qualify.

Listings on this page draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details sent in by providers. Use them to compare levels of care, payment options, languages and the populations each program serves.

Common questions about Alcohol Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Massachusetts cities have alcohol rehabs?

Alcohol rehab listings in Massachusetts cluster in Worcester, Roxbury Crossing, Lowell, Fall River and Pittsfield, so the places where programs gather are spread across the state rather than sitting in a single city.

Boston, Worcester and Lowell are the larger cities nearby, and communities around them offer a wider spread of options. Program types, admission rules and payment routes vary from one provider to the next, so intake staff can explain what a particular listing offers.

Rehab Centers in Worcesterhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/worcester/
Do alcohol rehabs in Massachusetts take MassHealth?

Nearly all of the alcohol rehabs in Massachusetts record accepting MassHealth. Fallon 365 Care, WellSense Essential MCO and the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership are among the MassHealth plans members may carry.

Coverage runs through whichever plan a member is enrolled in, so networks can differ. Calling the admissions team with the plan name and member ID ready is a quick way to confirm whether a specific program is in network.

Rehab Centers in Massachusetts That Accept MassHealthhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/masshealth/
Are there alcohol rehabs near a river in Massachusetts?

Nearly all of the alcohol rehabs in Massachusetts sit within 25 miles of a river, at a median of about 2.5 miles from listed facilities. The Middle River, Muddy River and Whitman River are the rivers named near these programs, so river towns are common settings for treatment across the state.

Is it safe to stop drinking without medical help in Massachusetts?

Stopping heavy daily drinking suddenly can be medically dangerous, so get a clinical assessment before you make any plan to quit. Some people have seizures or delirium tremens, a state of severe confusion. A clinician looks at how much and how long you have been drinking, any past withdrawal and other health conditions. From that, the clinician decides between medically managed inpatient care, a residential setting or outpatient withdrawal management with regular visits. Programs offering withdrawal care appear on the Massachusetts detox listings.

Chapter 258 of the Acts of 2014 requires MassHealth, the Group Insurance Commission and state-regulated insurers to cover acute treatment services and clinical stabilization services for substance use disorder without prior authorization.

Call 911 for a seizure, hallucinations or confusion during withdrawal. For an emotional crisis, call or text 988. The Massachusetts Substance Use Helpline, 800-327-5050 (or text HOPE), can talk through options and referrals.

What types of alcohol treatment are available in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts listings for alcohol treatment cover withdrawal management, residential care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, standard outpatient and telehealth.

Level of careWhat it usually involves
Withdrawal managementMedical monitoring while you stop drinking
ResidentialLive-in treatment with daily counseling
Partial hospitalizationMost of the day, several days a week, home at night
Intensive outpatientSeveral sessions a week, a few hours each
Outpatient and telehealthWeekly visits, in person or by video or phone

You can compare programs by level on the residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, outpatient and telehealth pages. Under All Provider Bulletin 374, MassHealth pays for live video and audio-only telehealth at the same rate as in-person care.

Alcohol programs in Massachusetts are concentrated in Greater Boston and the eastern part of the state. Worcester, Roxbury Crossing in Boston, Lowell, Fall River, Pittsfield and Brockton come up most often. About two in three listed programs are in town settings, and 64 percent sit within 25 miles of the coast. Every listed program is within 25 miles of a river, at a median of 2.5 miles, most often the Middle River or the Muddy River. Boston Logan International is the most common nearest major airport, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 11.9 miles.

Are there medications for alcohol use disorder, and where can I get them in Massachusetts?

Yes. Naltrexone, acamprosate and disulfiram carry FDA labeling for alcohol use disorder, and a licensed prescriber can provide them in outpatient care as well as in residential programs.

  • Naltrexone comes as a daily tablet or a monthly injection. It blocks opioid receptors, so it is not used by people taking opioids.
  • Acamprosate is a tablet, usually started after drinking has stopped.
  • Disulfiram causes an unpleasant physical reaction if alcohol is consumed.

When a program reports offering these medications, its listing says so.

How do I pay for alcohol treatment in Massachusetts?

Most people in Massachusetts pay for alcohol treatment through MassHealth, Medicare, private insurance or state-funded care arranged through BSAS.

MassHealth, the state Medicaid program, covers adults with low incomes under Medicaid expansion. Where you get behavioral health care depends on your plan:

  • PCC Plan and Primary Care ACO members use the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership.
  • Accountable Care Partnership Plan members use their plan’s own network.

Programs that take Medicare are on the Medicare rehab page.

People without coverage can ask the helpline about BSAS-funded treatment. Programs reporting public funding appear under state-funded rehab in Massachusetts.

For a sense of cost, the state sets rates for publicly purchased programs under 101 CMR 346.00. From July 1, 2026, those rates are $196.24 per day for residential rehabilitation, not including room and board, and $33.10 per 15 minutes of individual outpatient counseling. Listings also note cash, sliding-scale and private insurance options where providers report them.

What Massachusetts rules and support options affect alcohol treatment?

Massachusetts has its own rules for drunk driving offenses, court-ordered treatment and overdose emergencies.

Drunk driving, courts and emergencies

Massachusetts runs several programs for alcohol-related driving offenses, all licensed by BSAS:

  • First offenders who receive a 24D disposition under M.G.L. c.90 s.24D attend the Massachusetts Impaired Driving Program, formerly Driver Alcohol Education.
  • People convicted of certain alcohol-related offenses must complete an assessment under M.G.L. c.90 s.24Q.
  • Second offenders are served by Second Offender Aftercare and a 14-day residential program.

You can browse DUI programs in Massachusetts. The Trial Court’s Specialty Courts Department also runs Recovery Courts, formerly called drug courts. Programs that take court referrals are on the court-ordered rehab page.

The Massachusetts Good Samaritan law, M.G.L. c.94C s.34A, protects a person who seeks help for an overdose, and the person overdosing, from possession charges. The law is written around controlled substances, but any medical emergency involving alcohol still warrants a 911 call.

Helping a family member

Families worried about someone’s drinking can start with the Massachusetts Substance Use Helpline for referral options. When drinking creates a likelihood of serious harm, Section 35 (M.G.L. c.123 s.35) lets a court commit a person to inpatient treatment.

Peer support is available in many Massachusetts communities through Alcoholics Anonymous, SMART Recovery and recovery community organizations.

For background on alcohol use disorder nationally, see the alcohol addiction page. Every treatment type in the state is linked from the Massachusetts rehab directory.
