Inpatient Rehab Centers in Massachusetts

Inpatient listings on this page are for alcohol and drug treatment in Massachusetts, not physical rehabilitation after a stroke, surgery or injury. Inpatient care for substance use means round-the-clock treatment with medical staff on hand. It usually takes place in a hospital unit or a medically monitored program, for people who need withdrawal care or close psychiatric attention.

Massachusetts inpatient listings cluster in Greater Boston, with Jamaica Plain and Roxbury Crossing among the most common addresses, and smaller groups around Worcester, Fall River and Northampton. Listing details draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers supply themselves. For every kind of care in the state, see treatment in Massachusetts.

Common questions about Inpatient Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are inpatient rehabs in Massachusetts?

Inpatient rehab listings in Massachusetts cluster in Jamaica Plain, Roxbury Crossing, Tewksbury, Worcester and Fall River. People coming from Boston, Lowell or New Bedford can start with those places when comparing options. Each listing gives the address, so families can weigh travel time for visits and discharge planning alongside the level of care.

Rehab Centers in Jamaica Plainhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/jamaica-plain/
Do inpatient rehabs in Massachusetts take MassHealth?

Nearly all of the inpatient rehabs in Massachusetts take MassHealth. Coverage flows through whichever plan the member is enrolled in, for example the Community Care Cooperative, a Primary Care ACO, the Mass General Brigham Health Plan with Mass General Brigham ACO, or Fallon 365 Care.

Behavioral health for Primary Care ACO members is handled by the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership. A quick call to the plan before admission confirms network status and any approval needed for the stay.

Rehab Centers in Massachusetts That Accept MassHealthhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/masshealth/
Are there inpatient rehabs near a river in Massachusetts?

Rivers sit close to inpatient rehabs in Massachusetts: nearly all of the inpatient rehabs in Massachusetts have one within 25 miles, with the nearest a median of about 2.7 miles away from listed facilities. Named most frequently near inpatient rehabs in the state are the Muddy River, Middle River and Aberjona River.

What does inpatient treatment for substance use look like in Massachusetts?

Inpatient treatment for substance use disorder in Massachusetts is 24-hour care with physicians and nurses available, aimed at getting someone through withdrawal or a medical or psychiatric crisis safely. Massachusetts law also uses the names acute treatment services and clinical stabilization services for short medical stays of this kind.

The national placement standard from the American Society of Addiction Medicine describes two such levels. Medically monitored intensive inpatient services sit at level 3.7, while medically managed intensive inpatient services, which are hospital-based, sit at level 4. Residential care, by comparison, lasts longer and centers on therapy and daily structure, with less medical coverage.

Massachusetts listings show levels of care, payment types, insurers taken, accreditation, languages and populations served. Many note withdrawal management, psychiatric care for co-occurring mental health conditions, or medications for opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder, such as buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone. Ask the admissions team which of these are offered on site.

State law has required MassHealth and state-regulated insurers to cover acute treatment and clinical stabilization services without prior authorization since 2015, though hospital stays and longer admissions may still need sign-off from the plan. Stays are usually measured in days rather than months, and planning for residential, partial hospitalization or outpatient care begins during the stay.

Who licenses inpatient programs?

The Bureau of Substance Addiction Services, part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, licenses substance use disorder treatment programs under 105 CMR 164.000. To look up a license, search the bureau’s program licensing page on mass.gov or ask intake staff for the license number. Hospital-based units can explain how their substance use services are licensed.

A note on withdrawal safety

Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be dangerous and needs a medical assessment before anyone stops suddenly. In an emergency, call 911. For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988. The Massachusetts Substance Use Helpline, 800-327-5050 (or text HOPE), can help locate open beds.

How is inpatient care different from residential treatment?

Inpatient care is short and medically driven, while residential treatment is a longer stay built around therapy and daily routines, with lighter medical coverage. Many people move from one to the other. Massachusetts publishes a public rate for residential rehabilitation of $196.24 per day without room and board under 101 CMR 346.00, effective July 1, 2026. That figure is a state purchasing rate, not a price quote. Residential programs in Massachusetts have their own listings.

LevelMedical coverageMain focus
Hospital-based inpatient (ASAM 4)Physicians daily, nursing around the clockSevere withdrawal, medical or psychiatric instability
Medically monitored inpatient (ASAM 3.7)24-hour nursing, physician oversightWithdrawal care and stabilization
Residential (ASAM 3.1 to 3.5)Staff on site, less medical intensityTherapy, skills and recovery routines

Will Medicare, MassHealth or private insurance pay for an inpatient stay?

Coverage depends on the plan and on medical need, but Massachusetts law removes prior authorization for two common short inpatient services. Under Chapter 258 of the Acts of 2014, MassHealth, the Group Insurance Commission and state-regulated insurers must cover acute treatment services and clinical stabilization services without prior authorization. That rule has applied since October 1, 2015. Hospital stays and longer admissions may still need approval, and self-funded employer plans can follow different rules, so ask the insurer before admission when possible.

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care, including substance use and psychiatric stays, when the stay is medically necessary. Deductibles and coinsurance apply. See programs listing Medicare. MassHealth members in the PCC Plan or a Primary Care ACO get behavioral health care through the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership. Accountable Care Partnership Plan members use their plan’s own network. See programs that take Medicaid. Uninsured residents can ask about care paid through the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services, listed under state-funded rehab.

How long does an inpatient stay for substance use usually last?

Massachusetts inpatient stays are usually measured in days rather than months, with the length set by medical need instead of a fixed calendar. Withdrawal care and stabilization often end once symptoms settle and a next step is in place. Pregnant and postpartum women are a priority population for the state, with expedited access to every level of treatment. A Massachusetts court can also order inpatient treatment under Section 35 when substance use creates a likelihood of serious harm. Programs that accept those referrals appear under court-ordered rehab.

What happens after an inpatient stay ends in Massachusetts?

Discharge planning in Massachusetts starts during the stay. A written plan typically covers the next level of care, continued medication and a first follow-up appointment. Step-down options include residential care, a partial hospitalization program and outpatient counseling. Some people also move into sober housing. State agencies and their contracted providers may refer only to sober homes certified through the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing. Planning ahead helps lower the chance of a return to use in the weeks after discharge.

Families planning visits may find location details useful. Every inpatient program listed in Massachusetts sits within 25 miles of a river, a median of 2.7 miles away, most often the Muddy River. Nearly three in four are within 25 miles of the coast. Boston Logan International is the most common nearest airport, and the median distance to the closest airport is 9.2 miles.

When comparing listings, filter by your insurer and the language spoken at home first. Then ask each program about withdrawal care, medications and discharge planning. The national inpatient programs page covers options beyond Massachusetts.
