Methadone Clinics in Massachusetts

Methadone for opioid use disorder in Massachusetts comes from opioid treatment programs, not from a regular pharmacy. The listings on this page cover programs from Greater Boston and the North Shore to Worcester, Fall River and the Springfield area. Each listing notes hours, medications and payment.

Below you’ll find how intake works, when take-home doses become possible, how MassHealth and Medicare handle methadone, and which state office oversees treatment programs. Listing details come from public treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send us. Ask the program about hours and insurance before your first visit.

Common questions about Methadone Clinics

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Massachusetts cities have methadone clinics?

Massachusetts methadone treatment listings cluster most heavily in Roxbury Crossing, followed by Worcester, Millbury, Danvers and Weymouth. Location matters, since early treatment usually means daily dosing visits.

People living near Boston, Lowell or Worcester can compare clinics around those cities by travel time, dosing hours, parking and transit access. A clinic close to home or work is often easier to reach every morning.

Rehab Centers in Roxbury Crossinghttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/roxbury-crossing/
Does MassHealth cover methadone treatment in Massachusetts?

Nearly all of the methadone clinics in Massachusetts record accepting MassHealth. Intake staff can usually confirm coverage on the first call, before an assessment or a first dose is scheduled at the clinic.

Which network applies depends on the member's own plan. PCC Plan and Primary Care ACO members get behavioral health through the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership, while WellSense Essential MCO members use that plan's providers.

Rehab Centers in Massachusetts That Accept MassHealthhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/masshealth/
Which methadone clinics in Massachusetts are close to a river?

Nearly all of the methadone clinics in Massachusetts sit within 25 miles of a river, at a median of about 2.6 miles from listed facilities. The most-named rivers are the Muddy River, Middle River and Bass River. Because dosing visits are frequent early on, a nearby riverside path can fit into a daily route.

How do methadone clinics work in Massachusetts?

Methadone clinics in Massachusetts are opioid treatment programs, which need federal certification and a registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration to dispense methadone for opioid use disorder. You can’t fill methadone for this purpose at a retail pharmacy. Staff measure each dose and give it at the program, usually as a liquid, along with counseling and regular medical visits.

Many Massachusetts programs also offer buprenorphine, and some offer naltrexone. Treatment programs in the state are licensed by the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services in the Department of Public Health under Title 105 of the Code of Massachusetts Regulations, section 164.000. The bureau’s opioid treatment page names the State Opioid Treatment Authority as the state contact.

A methadone program here therefore answers to federal rules and state oversight at the same time. Getting started usually involves calling or walking in while intake is open, then a medical exam and assessment, and some programs can give a first dose the same day or the next, depending on staffing and policy.

Take-home doses depend on federal rules and clinical judgment, with staff weighing attendance, stability and safe storage at home. Most people pay with MassHealth, a private plan or Medicare Part B, while uninsured patients can ask about a weekly self-pay fee or publicly funded slots.

How do you start methadone treatment, and can you begin the same day?

Starting methadone usually begins with a phone call or a walk-in during intake hours, followed by an assessment and a medical exam. A clinician asks about your opioid use, other medications and health conditions before setting a first dose. Some programs can give that first dose the same day or the next day, but timing depends on staffing and each program’s policies. Dosing windows at many programs open early in the morning, so intake often happens then too.

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, a list of current medications, and any records from a previous program. Federal rules and BSAS guidance treat pregnant and postpartum women as a priority population with faster access to care. The state’s Pregnant Women’s Access Line helps with referrals and interim services, and our programs for pregnant women in Massachusetts list more options. Massachusetts law lets some people as young as 12 consent to drug treatment, but that rule does not cover methadone maintenance.

When can you get take-home doses of methadone in Massachusetts?

Take-home doses depend on federal rules in 42 CFR Part 8 and on the judgment of the program’s clinical staff. The 2024 revision of those rules allows a limited number of take-home doses in the first weeks and larger supplies after the first month. Staff consider attendance, stability, safe storage at home and any recent return to use. A Massachusetts program can set stricter policies than the federal rules, so ask intake staff how their schedule works.

Staying safe with methadone

Methadone builds up in the body over the first several days, so early doses start low and any change is supervised. Combining methadone with alcohol, benzodiazepines or other sedatives raises the risk of slowed breathing. Keep take-home bottles in a locked box, away from children and visitors. Under a statewide standing order, any Massachusetts resident can get naloxone at a pharmacy without a prescription, and MassHealth members pay no copay.

Does MassHealth, Medicare or private insurance pay for methadone?

Payment for methadone in Massachusetts usually runs through MassHealth, Medicare Part B or a private plan. Some programs also list state-funded or reduced-fee options for people without coverage. Billing rules differ by plan, so ask the admissions team which plans the program bills.

PayerWhat to know
MassHealthPCC Plan and Primary Care ACO members get behavioral health through the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership. Accountable Care Partnership Plans use their own networks. The Tufts Health Together MCO ended January 1, 2026.
MedicarePart B has covered opioid treatment program services, including medication and counseling, since 2020.
Private insuranceCopays and limits depend on the plan. The program’s billing office can look up your benefits.
No insuranceMany programs charge a weekly self-pay fee. Ask for the current rate, and look at state-funded options in Massachusetts.

Where are methadone clinics in Massachusetts, and how do you use these listings?

Massachusetts methadone programs cluster in the eastern half of the state, with others around Worcester, Fall River and Springfield and fewer in the Berkshires and on Cape Cod. By our measurements, 62 percent sit in town settings, 27 percent in urban areas and 11 percent in rural places. Every listed program lies within 25 miles of a river, at a median of 2.6 miles, most often the Muddy River in Boston. About a third have Boston Logan as their closest airport, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 11.8 miles.

Daily dosing makes distance matter more than it does for most care. If you plan to travel, ask your home program to arrange guest dosing at another OTP ahead of time; moving to a new program works the same way. Some people discuss buprenorphine from an office-based or telehealth prescriber with a clinician instead. Those options appear on our Suboxone clinics in Massachusetts page.

Each listing shows OTP certification as listed, medications offered, payment types and insurers, hours, languages, populations served and location. The Massachusetts Substance Use Helpline, 800-327-5050, can also help you find openings. For other care, browse detox, outpatient programs, opioid rehab, or all Massachusetts treatment.
