Outpatient Rehab Centers in Massachusetts

Outpatient treatment for substance use lets a person live at home while attending counseling, group sessions and medication visits on a set schedule. Programs listed across Massachusetts range from a weekly therapy appointment to day programs that fill most of a weekday.

RehabSeekers.com draws these listings from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and information the providers send us. Each listing shows the levels of care, payment types, insurers, languages and groups a program says it serves. You can compare options around Worcester, Springfield, Lowell or Greater Boston before you call.

Common questions about Outpatient Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Massachusetts cities have outpatient rehabs?

Outpatient rehab listings in Massachusetts gather most heavily in Worcester, Springfield, Roxbury Crossing, Fall River and Pittsfield. Anyone attending weekday sessions while living at home can start the search in whichever of those places sits closest to work or family.

Larger cities such as Boston, Lowell and Springfield also sit near outpatient listings. Because outpatient care means traveling to appointments and returning home the same day, a short commute often matters more than the town name itself.

Rehab Centers in Worcesterhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/worcester/
Do outpatient rehabs in Massachusetts take MassHealth?

Nearly all of the outpatient rehabs in Massachusetts record accepting MassHealth. Coverage works through the plan a member is enrolled in, such as WellSense Essential MCO, Fallon 365 Care or the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership, so confirming the plan name with the admissions team before a first appointment is sensible.

Rehab Centers in Massachusetts That Accept MassHealthhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/masshealth/
Are there outpatient rehabs near a river in Massachusetts?

Nearly all of the outpatient rehabs in Massachusetts have a river within 25 miles, and the median distance to the nearest one is about 2.3 miles from each listed facility. The most-named rivers are the Muddy River, Middle River and Westfield River.

Outpatient sessions run during the day or evening, with clients returning home afterward. A river nearby describes location only, not the clinical program or its schedule.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What does outpatient treatment for substance use look like in Massachusetts?

Outpatient treatment for substance use disorder in Massachusetts is scheduled care for alcohol or drug use that you attend while living at home, starting with an assessment. After that, a program may offer individual counseling, group sessions, family meetings and medication visits. This page is not about physical therapy after an injury or surgery.

Most outpatient listings in Massachusetts sit in town settings rather than dense city cores. They cluster in Worcester, Springfield, Fall River, Pittsfield and Lowell as well as around Boston. For a general overview of the treatment type, see outpatient programs nationwide.

Getting to appointments matters when you go several times a week. All of the listed outpatient programs in the state are within 25 miles of a river, at a median of 2.3 miles, and the Muddy River is the one most of them are near. Listed programs sit a median of 12.4 miles from the nearest airport.

Nearly all of these programs are within 30 miles of an airport, and Boston Logan, Worcester Regional and Hanscom Field are the ones closest to the largest groups. MassHealth, the Massachusetts Medicaid program, pays for outpatient addiction treatment, as do Medicare and most private plans, and standard outpatient care runs under 9 hours a week for adults.

Medications offered in outpatient settings

Some outpatient programs in Massachusetts prescribe medication for opioid or alcohol use disorder alongside counseling. Buprenorphine and naltrexone can be prescribed in an office setting. Methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed only through licensed opioid treatment programs. For alcohol use disorder, prescribers may discuss naltrexone, acamprosate or disulfiram. Listings for Suboxone clinics in Massachusetts show which providers say they offer buprenorphine. Many counseling visits can also happen by video or phone through telehealth programs.

How many hours a week is outpatient care compared with IOP and PHP?

Standard outpatient care is under 9 hours a week for adults. Intensive outpatient care is 9 hours or more, and partial hospitalization is 20 hours or more. These figures follow the national ASAM level definitions.

Level of careTypical weekly hours (adults)
Standard outpatient (ASAM 1)Fewer than 9
Intensive outpatient, IOP (ASAM 2.1)9 or more
Partial hospitalization, PHP (ASAM 2.5)20 or more

Thresholds for adolescents are lower in the ASAM definitions. Massachusetts licenses treatment programs under 105 CMR 164.000, and each program sets its own schedule within those rules. Ask the admissions team how many days and hours they expect. You can compare IOP in Massachusetts with PHP in Massachusetts.

Does MassHealth or private insurance pay for outpatient treatment?

MassHealth, the Massachusetts Medicaid program, pays for outpatient substance use treatment, and so do Medicare and most private plans. Which network you use depends on your MassHealth plan. PCC Plan and Primary Care ACO members get behavioral health care through the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership. Accountable Care Partnership Plans use their own networks, including the WellSense, Fallon and Tufts Health Together plans. MassHealth pays for live video and audio-only telehealth at the same rate as in-person care. More on Medicaid coverage is on our Medicaid page.

Federal parity law means private plans that cover substance use care cannot limit it more strictly than comparable medical care. Each listing shows which insurers the program says it accepts. Confirm your plan with intake staff before your first visit. People without coverage can look at state-funded options or sliding-scale programs. For publicly purchased services from July 1, 2026, the state’s set rate for outpatient individual counseling is $33.10 per 15 minutes. That is the rate the state pays providers, not a patient bill.

How can I check that an outpatient program in Massachusetts is licensed?

The Bureau of Substance Addiction Services, part of the Department of Public Health, licenses substance use disorder treatment programs in Massachusetts. The same bureau also licenses individual Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors. Ask a program for its license details and check them on the bureau’s licensing page on mass.gov. Joint Commission or CARF accreditation is another credential to look for. A listing on this site shows what a provider reports and is not an endorsement.

Some groups have their own rules. Massachusetts law lets a person aged 12 or older consent to treatment without a parent if two physicians find them drug dependent. Methadone maintenance is not covered by that rule. Pregnant and postpartum women are a priority population with faster access to all levels of care. The Pregnant Women’s Access Line helps with referrals. Listings for programs serving pregnant women show who offers this care.

When is outpatient care not enough?

Outpatient care may not be enough when withdrawal could be medically risky, when health or mental health needs require closer watch, or when home is not a safe place to stay sober. Stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids after heavy use can cause dangerous withdrawal. Get an assessment before you stop on your own. A clinician may suggest medically managed detox or residential care first, with outpatient sessions afterward.

You can call or text the Massachusetts Substance Use Helpline at 800-327-5050 for help finding the right level of care. To text, send HOPE. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988. For local services, dial 211. Call 911 in an emergency. To see every treatment type across the state, start from the Massachusetts treatment page.
