Rehab Centers in Minnesota That Accept Medicare

Medicare can pay for several kinds of substance use treatment in Minnesota. What it covers depends on which part of Medicare applies and where the care takes place. Hospital-based withdrawal management, outpatient counseling, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, opioid treatment programs and prescriptions each fall under a different part, with different costs and limits.

The listings on this page are Minnesota programs that report accepting Medicare. They are drawn from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send in about themselves. Medicare acceptance can change, so ask the admissions team whether a program is enrolled in Medicare before you plan around it.

Common questions about Medicare Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Minnesota cities have Medicare rehabs?

Start by checking listings in Minneapolis, Rochester, Duluth, Richfield and Mankato, where Medicare-accepting rehabs in Minnesota cluster, in that order. Minneapolis, Duluth and Rochester are also the biggest cities near these programs, so people outside the Twin Cities are not limited to the metro area when looking for Medicare-covered treatment.

Rehab Centers in Minneapolishttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/minnesota/minneapolis/
Do Medicare rehabs in Minnesota take Minnesota Medical Assistance?

Minnesota Medical Assistance is accepted by nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Minnesota, which matters for people enrolled in Medicare and Medical Assistance at once. Dual coverage can reduce what a patient owes, since Medical Assistance may pick up costs Medicare leaves behind.

Asking the admissions team to confirm that Medicare and Medical Assistance will be billed together before treatment starts is a sensible step, as is asking whether any copay or deductible remains.

Rehab Centers in Minnesota That Accept Minnesota Medical Assistancehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/minnesota/minnesota-medical-assistance/
Are there Medicare rehabs near a river in Minnesota?

Rivers lie within 25 miles of nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Minnesota, at a median of about 7 miles from each listed facility. The Minnesota River, the Rum River and the Credit River are the rivers that come up nearby, which suits anyone who wants a riverside setting.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

Does Medicare pay for addiction treatment in Minnesota?

Yes, Medicare pays for medically necessary substance use disorder care in Minnesota when the provider is enrolled in Medicare and the service fits a covered benefit. Original Medicare is a federal program, so the rules are the same in Minneapolis, Rochester and small towns across the state.

Programs are licensed separately by the Minnesota Department of Human Services under state law. Since 2024, licensed professional counselors and marriage and family therapists can also enroll as Medicare providers, which widens who can bill Medicare for counseling. Part A covers inpatient stays, Part B outpatient services, and Part D most prescriptions.

Residential treatment outside a hospital is generally not covered by Original Medicare, a common surprise for families. Medical Assistance, Minnesota’s Medicaid program, does pay for residential care, so people enrolled in both programs may be able to fill that gap.

Minnesota listings that report Medicare acceptance cluster in Minneapolis, Rochester and Duluth, with urban areas holding the largest share, then towns, then rural places. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International is the nearest major airport for about half of them, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 14.5 miles, which helps when family members fly in for visits.

Which parts of Medicare cover detox, outpatient care and medications?

Medicare splits substance use care across three parts: Part A for inpatient stays, Part B for outpatient services and Part D for most prescriptions. The table below shows where each common service falls.

PartWhat it covers for substance use care
Part AInpatient hospital care, including medically managed withdrawal, and psychiatric hospital stays. Stays in a freestanding psychiatric hospital have a 190-day lifetime limit.
Part BOutpatient counseling and therapy, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care (a benefit added in 2024), and opioid treatment program services, including methadone (covered since 2020).
Part DPrescriptions such as buprenorphine and naltrexone tablets, with a yearly cap on out-of-pocket drug costs.

Each part has its own costs. Part A has a deductible for each benefit period. Part B coinsurance is usually 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount after the yearly deductible. Medicare.gov posts the current year’s amounts. You can find Minnesota listings for detox, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, methadone clinics and Suboxone clinics. Many of these programs also report care for co-occurring mental health conditions.

Does Medicare cover residential rehab, and what are the options if it does not?

Original Medicare generally does not pay for residential treatment outside a hospital, and it does not pay for sober living. This is the biggest gap between what many people expect from “rehab” coverage and what Medicare actually pays for.

Minnesota’s Medicaid program, Medical Assistance, does pay for residential care. From January 1, 2026, the state rate paid to providers is $400 a day for clinically managed residential care and $515 a day for medically monitored residential care. People enrolled in both programs, called dual-eligible members, can have Medical Assistance cover residential programs that Medicare will not pay for. More on Medicaid acceptance is on the Medicaid page. Other options are state-funded rehab and sliding scale programs.

Who else is on Medicare in Minnesota?

Medicare is not only for adults 65 and older. People under 65 usually qualify after receiving Social Security disability benefits for 24 months, and people with end-stage renal disease or ALS can qualify too. Medicare Savings Programs, run through the Department of Human Services, can help people with limited income pay Part B premiums and, in some programs, deductibles and coinsurance.

How do Medicare Advantage plans in Minnesota handle substance use treatment?

Medicare Advantage plans in Minnesota must cover everything Original Medicare covers, but they use provider networks and often require prior authorization. Prior authorization means the plan must approve care in advance, which is common for inpatient stays, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care. Going out of network can cost far more or not be covered at all, so look up the program in your plan’s provider directory before you call. Dual-eligible seniors may be enrolled in Minnesota Senior Health Options, which combines Medicare and Medical Assistance in one plan. Plan choices changed for 2026 after UCare’s version of that program ended on December 31, 2025.

What to ask before admission

Ask the admissions team four questions:

  • Is the program enrolled in Medicare?
  • Which of its services does it bill to Medicare?
  • What will you likely owe out of pocket?
  • Are telehealth visits available?

Medicare pays for substance use counseling by video, including at home. Minnesota telehealth programs are listed separately.

Where can people on Medicare in Minnesota get free help comparing coverage?

Minnesota’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as SHIP, offers free and unbiased Medicare counseling. Calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) is a simple way to reach it. SHIP counselors can compare Medicare Advantage and Part D plans, explain dual eligibility and help with Medicare Savings Program applications. For help finding treatment, the national treatment referral line at 1-800-662-4357 is free and open around the clock. In a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988.

Minnesota listings can be sorted by level of care, setting and location. Almost every program that reports Medicare acceptance sits within 25 miles of a river, most often the Minnesota River, with a median distance of 7 miles. The national Medicare guide covers the federal rules in more detail, and the Minnesota overview brings together every program type listed in the state.
