Outpatient Rehab Centers in Minnesota

Outpatient rehab in Minnesota means treatment for alcohol or drug use that you attend while living at home, keeping up with work, school or family. These listings cover substance use programs only. They do not cover physical therapy or rehabilitation after an injury or surgery.

Minnesota outpatient programs range from a weekly counseling session to structured day programs, and all are licensed through the state’s Department of Human Services. Listing details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send us. Before you go, ask the program about its services, hours and payment.

Common questions about Outpatient Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are outpatient rehabs in Minnesota?

Minneapolis leads the list of Minnesota places where outpatient rehab listings cluster, followed by Rochester, Duluth, Richfield and Saint Paul. People in rural parts of the state often look toward Minneapolis, Duluth or Saint Cloud, the larger cities within reach, when weekly appointments closer to home are hard to find.

Rehab Centers in Minneapolishttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/minnesota/minneapolis/
Does Minnesota Medical Assistance cover outpatient rehab in Minnesota?

Nearly all of the outpatient rehabs in Minnesota accept Minnesota Medical Assistance, the state's Medicaid program. Coverage usually runs through a health plan such as Blue Plus, HealthPartners, Hennepin Health, Medica or UCare, so intake staff ask which plan is on your member card.

Certain UCare plans continue under the UCare name in 2026 while Medica acquires UCare contracts. Before a first appointment, ask the program to confirm it is in network with your specific plan.

Rehab Centers in Minnesota That Accept Minnesota Medical Assistancehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/minnesota/minnesota-medical-assistance/
Are there outpatient rehabs near a river in Minnesota?

Nearly all of the outpatient rehabs in Minnesota sit within 25 miles of a river, with a median of about 7.2 miles from listed facilities to the nearest one. The rivers named near these programs are the Minnesota River, Credit River and Rum River, for anyone who wants appointments near water.

What does outpatient treatment for substance use look like in Minnesota?

Outpatient treatment for substance use disorder in Minnesota means scheduled counseling, group sessions and, at some programs, medication, while you keep living at home. For adults, standard outpatient care usually runs under 9 hours a week, a lighter schedule than intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization.

Listed programs lean toward the Twin Cities. Urban settings hold the largest share of the outpatient listings, followed by towns and then rural areas, and Minneapolis, Rochester and Duluth have the most. Nearly all of these programs sit within 25 miles of a river, and the Minnesota River is the one most of them are near.

Travel from Greater Minnesota or another state is usually manageable. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International is the nearest major airport for about half of the outpatient programs listed, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 14.1 miles. For a national overview, see outpatient programs across the US.

Each listing shows the groups a program serves, such as adolescents, veterans or pregnant women, and the languages its staff speak. Some groups have added rights: a Minnesota minor of any age may agree to alcohol and drug services on their own, and programs funded by the federal block grant give pregnant women preference at admission.

  • Minors: Minnesota law lets a minor of any age consent to alcohol and drug services without a parent’s consent. See teen programs in Minnesota.
  • Pregnant women: programs funded by the federal block grant must give pregnant women preference at admission.
  • Veterans: veterans can also ask the VA medical centers in Minneapolis and St. Cloud.
  • American Indian families: tribal health programs within the Indian Health Service Bemidji Area also offer care.

Which medications are offered in outpatient settings?

Some Minnesota outpatient programs prescribe or coordinate medications for opioid or alcohol use disorder alongside counseling.

  • Opioid use disorder: buprenorphine, often found through Suboxone clinics in Minnesota; naltrexone; and methadone. Methadone is given only through opioid treatment programs licensed under chapter 245G (see methadone clinics in Minnesota).
  • Alcohol use disorder: prescribers may use naltrexone, acamprosate or disulfiram.

Whether any medication fits is a decision for you and a prescriber.

How many hours a week is outpatient care compared with IOP and PHP?

The American Society of Addiction Medicine sets the usual hours for each level of care. For adults, standard outpatient is usually under 9 hours a week, intensive outpatient (IOP) is 9 or more, and partial hospitalization (PHP) is 20 or more.

Level of careTypical adult hours per weekWhat it involves
Standard outpatientUnder 9Individual and group counseling on a set schedule
Intensive outpatient (IOP)9 or moreSeveral group and individual sessions spread across the week
Partial hospitalization (PHP)20 or moreDay-long programming with closer medical and psychiatric support, home at night

Hours for adolescents are lower: under 6 hours a week for standard outpatient and 6 or more for IOP. Minnesota licenses these programs under the same state chapter, but each one sets its own schedule, so ask intake staff how many days and hours they expect. Compare options at IOP in Minnesota and PHP in Minnesota.

Does Minnesota Medicaid or private insurance pay for outpatient treatment?

Yes. Minnesota’s Medicaid program, Medical Assistance, pays for outpatient substance use treatment, and Medicare and private insurance can also cover it. From January 1, 2026, Medical Assistance pays programs these rates:

  • Comprehensive assessment: $162.24
  • Individual counseling: $86.53 an hour
  • Group counseling: $42.04 an hour

These are payments to the program, not your bill. Medical Assistance covers adults without children as well as families.

Many Medical Assistance members get care through a health plan, and the choices depend on your county. Plans the state has listed include Blue Plus, HealthPartners, Hennepin Health, Medica, PrimeWest Health, South Country Health Alliance and UCare. See programs that accept Medicaid.

Other ways to pay:

  • Private insurance: federal parity law generally bars health plans from limiting substance use benefits more strictly than medical benefits.
  • No insurance: look at state-funded rehab in Minnesota and sliding-scale programs.
  • Telehealth: Minnesota Health Care Programs pay for substance use treatment by live video, and audio-only sessions are covered until July 1, 2027 under set conditions. See telehealth options.

Each listing shows the payment types and insurers the program reports accepting.

How can I check that an outpatient program in Minnesota is licensed?

Ask the program for its license and look it up with the Minnesota Department of Human Services, which licenses substance use disorder programs under Minnesota Statutes chapter 245G. A licensed program should be able to give you its license details without hesitation.

Accreditation is a separate, voluntary credential. The two main ones are The Joint Commission and CARF, and you can ask the admissions team whether the program holds either. RehabSeekers.com does not rate, rank or vouch for programs. A listing reflects what the sources report.

When is outpatient care not enough?

Outpatient care may not be enough if withdrawal could be medically risky, if you have returned to use during earlier outpatient care, or if home is not a stable place to recover. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or other sedatives can cause seizures and may need medical supervision. Opioid withdrawal can also be severe. A comprehensive assessment is the usual first step in Minnesota and helps you see whether medically managed detox in Minnesota or another level of care fits better. You can browse every type of care at treatment across Minnesota.

Where can I find urgent help?

  • Call 911 for any emergency.
  • Call or text 988 for a mental health or substance use crisis.
  • Dial 211 to reach local services.
  • Call the national treatment referral line for help finding a program.
  • Use Fast-Tracker, a free statewide online search, to see current mental health and substance use treatment openings.

Minnesota has no statewide substance use phone line.
