State Funded Rehab Centers in Montana

Publicly funded substance use treatment in Montana runs through the Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Division (BHDD) of the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS). BHDD pays approved providers to serve residents who cannot cover the full cost themselves. The listings here are programs that report state funding or other public payment.

Montana’s state-funded programs sit mostly in small towns and rural areas: 57 percent rural and 43 percent town, with none in a large urban core. Nearly three in four lie within 25 miles of a river, most often the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River. Billings, Helena and Great Falls appear most often.

Common questions about State Funded Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Montana cities have state-funded rehabs?

Start by looking in Billings, Helena, Great Falls, Orchard Homes and Kalispell, where Montana listings for state-funded rehab cluster. Billings, Helena and Bozeman are the larger cities nearby for anyone weighing a longer drive. Before intake, ask each program whether public funding is open to new clients and which residents it serves.

Rehab Centers in Billingshttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/montana/billings/
Do state-funded rehabs in Montana accept Medicaid?

Montana Medicaid is accepted by nearly all of the state-funded rehabs in Montana. The program has no managed care plans and pays fee-for-service, and Passport to Health, a primary care case management program, enrolls the bulk of its members.

Before admission, intake staff can confirm whether a program bills Montana Medicaid directly and what paperwork, such as a member ID card, the admissions team needs on the first day.

Rehab Centers in Montana That Accept Montana Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/montana/montana-medicaid/
Which state-funded rehabs in Montana are near mountains?

About half of the state-funded rehabs in Montana have a mountain feature within 25 miles, at a median of about 14.8 miles from listed facilities. The most-named features are the Spokane Hills, the Bridger Range and the South Hills. Each listing's address shows which range or hills lie closest to a given clinic.

How does state-funded addiction treatment work in Montana?

In Montana, state-funded addiction treatment operates through the Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Division, which authorizes treatment providers and pays some or all of the cost of care for residents who qualify. Most of that money comes from the federal Substance Use Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Services Block Grant, which the division administers, combined with state dollars.

More funding layers on top. A State Opioid Response grant pays for medication for opioid use disorder, peer support and recovery housing, while opioid settlement money goes to the Montana Opioid Abatement Trust for prevention, treatment and recovery projects in regional abatement areas. A grant award does not mean a program has an open slot, so ask what it can cover now.

Residents without insurance, or whose plan leaves the needed care unpaid, are the main group this funding serves. No single statewide income limit is published, so each provider screens finances on its own terms, often with a sliding fee. Intake staff usually want photo identification, proof of a Montana address, proof of income and any insurance card you carry.

Pregnant women move to the front of the line at block grant programs under federal rules, and people who inject drugs also receive priority. Because state money is meant to fill gaps, admissions teams may ask uninsured applicants to apply for Montana Medicaid, which opened to many low-income adults under the HELP Act in 2016.

Are public and private programs licensed the same way?

Public and private programs in Montana follow the same licensing rules. The DPHHS Office of Inspector General licenses substance use disorder facilities through Health Care Facility Licensure. Separately, the BHDD Treatment Bureau grants state approval to treatment programs under 53-24-208 MCA. A state contract does not make a program better or worse than a private one. Listings show license and accreditation status as the provider or public records report them.

Who qualifies for publicly funded treatment in Montana?

State-funded care in Montana is mainly for residents who are uninsured, or whose coverage does not pay for the care they need. BHDD does not publish a single statewide income limit in the sources we used, so each approved provider runs its own financial screening, often with a sliding fee. We also found no dedicated state treatment helpline. In most cases, the first call goes straight to a program’s intake staff. Programs commonly ask for:

a photo ID; proof of a Montana address; pay stubs or other proof of income; and any insurance card you hold. Ask the admissions team which items they need before your appointment.

Is there a waitlist, and who gets priority in Montana?

Publicly funded programs in Montana can have waitlists, and federal block grant rules decide who moves to the front. Under 45 CFR 96.131, programs that receive block grant money must admit pregnant women first. If no bed is open, the program must offer interim services within 48 hours. Federal rules also give priority to people who inject drugs, with interim services such as counseling, education and referral while they wait.

Montana law adds a safe harbor for pregnant women. Under 50-32-609 MCA, the listed drug statutes do not apply to a pregnant woman who is seeking or receiving evaluation or treatment for a substance use disorder. Programs that serve pregnant clients are gathered at rehab for pregnant women in Montana.

Should I apply for Montana Medicaid before state funding?

Applying for Montana Medicaid first often makes sense. Montana expanded Medicaid under the HELP Act, effective January 1, 2016, so many adults with low incomes now qualify. State funds are meant to fill gaps, and intake staff may ask uninsured applicants to apply for Medicaid as part of admission.

Montana Medicaid has no managed care plans. Most members are enrolled in Passport to Health, a primary care case management program. Through the HEART waiver, Medicaid pays for short-term residential stays in larger treatment facilities, plus contingency management and reentry services. It also covers telehealth by live video or phone when medically necessary. You can browse programs that accept Medicaid.

What care and other options do Montana listings show?

Montana listings that report state or public funding cover several levels of care. The mix varies from program to program, so check each listing.

Level of careWhere to look
Withdrawal managementDetox in Montana
ResidentialResidential rehab
OutpatientOutpatient rehab
Opioid treatment programsMethadone clinics

Some programs offer reduced or free care through sliding fees or payment assistance. See sliding scale rehab and low-cost rehab in Montana.

Recovery housing, courts and backup lines

Montana does not require a state license for recovery housing. Residences may instead be certified by an organization DPHHS recognizes, and Recovery Access Montana is the state affiliate of the national recovery residence association. Since 2023, judges may not refer people to uncertified residences, and the Department of Corrections must prefer certified ones. Housing options are listed at sober living in Montana.

Montana’s court system runs 36 drug courts in district, municipal and justice courts, plus 8 Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts, coordinated by the Office of Court Administrator. Programs that take court referrals appear under court-ordered rehab. If you are in crisis, call or text 988. The national treatment referral line can also point you to programs by area.

Each listing shows what the program reports. Our information comes from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and the providers’ own submissions. The typical program sits about 5.8 miles from its nearest airport, most often Billings Logan International, at a median elevation of 3,275 feet. Browse all Montana programs, or read how state-funded treatment works nationwide.
