Common questions about Outpatient Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Nebraska cities have outpatient rehabs?

Listings for outpatient rehab in Nebraska cluster in Lincoln first, then Omaha, Norfolk, North Platte and Columbus, in that order, across the entire state of Nebraska.

Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island are the larger cities near these listings. Regular weekly outpatient sessions mean regular travel, so the distance between home and a provider is worth weighing early, especially outside those cities.

Rehab Centers in Lincolnhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/nebraska/lincoln-ne/
Do outpatient rehabs in Nebraska accept Medicaid?

Nebraska Medicaid is accepted by nearly all of the outpatient rehabs in Nebraska. Coverage is delivered through Heritage Health, a single arrangement that combines physical and behavioral health with dental and pharmacy benefits for each member.

Each member is assigned to one of Nebraska Total Care, Molina Healthcare of Nebraska or UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Before a first appointment, asking intake staff whether they work with your specific plan can prevent billing surprises.

Rehab Centers in Nebraska That Accept Nebraska Medicaid (Heritage Health)https://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/nebraska/nebraska-medicaid-heritage-health/
Are there outpatient rehabs near a river in Nebraska?

Nearly all of the outpatient rehabs in Nebraska have a river within 25 miles, with a median of about 13.6 miles from listed facilities. West Fork Big Blue River is the most-named, followed by the Platte River and the Elkhorn River. Outpatient clients return home after sessions.

What does outpatient treatment for substance use look like in Nebraska?

Outpatient treatment in Nebraska is counseling, group therapy and, where offered, medication for substance use, delivered in scheduled visits with no overnight stay. Public services are organized through six behavioral health regions, from Region 1 in the Panhandle to Region 6 in metro Omaha. The Division of Behavioral Health at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) oversees the regions. Options cluster around Omaha and Lincoln and thin out farther west, so some providers offer sessions by video. For those options, see telehealth rehab in Nebraska.

Location data for Nebraska’s outpatient listings shows a spread of settings. About 45 percent of programs are in urban areas, 16 percent are in towns and 39 percent are in rural areas. About 91 percent sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the West Fork Big Blue River. Lincoln Airport is the most common nearest airport, and the median distance from a program to its closest airport is 8.2 miles.

Medications for opioid or alcohol use disorder are part of care at many outpatient programs, alongside counseling. Buprenorphine and naltrexone can be prescribed in office-based settings. Methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed only through licensed opioid treatment programs. To find buprenorphine prescribers, see the listings for Suboxone clinics in Nebraska.

Nebraska listings also note the populations a provider serves, such as adolescents, veterans or pregnant women, and any languages other than English. Nebraska treats anyone under 19 as a minor unless they have married. No state law lets a minor consent alone to substance use treatment, so a parent or guardian generally signs. Pregnant women get admission priority at programs funded by the federal block grant.

How many hours a week is outpatient care compared with IOP and PHP?

Standard outpatient usually means fewer than 9 hours of treatment a week for adults. Intensive outpatient (IOP) means 9 or more hours, and partial hospitalization (PHP) means 20 or more, based on the ASAM level definitions. For adolescents, the thresholds are lower: under 6 hours a week for standard outpatient and 6 or more for IOP.

Level of careASAM levelTypical weekly hours
Standard outpatient1Under 9 (under 6 for teens)
Intensive outpatient (IOP)2.19 or more (6 or more for teens)
Partial hospitalization (PHP)2.520 or more

Schedules differ from one Nebraska program to the next. Ask intake staff how many hours and days a week the plan involves and how long it is expected to last. You can compare the more structured options on the IOP in Nebraska and PHP in Nebraska pages.

Does Nebraska Medicaid or private insurance pay for outpatient treatment?

Nebraska Medicaid pays for behavioral health care, including substance use treatment, through its Heritage Health managed care program. Heritage Health combines physical health, behavioral health, dental and pharmacy coverage. The plans are offered by Nebraska Total Care, Molina Healthcare of Nebraska and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Adults who qualify under the Medicaid expansion that began October 1, 2020 are covered through Heritage Health Adult. To find providers that take Medicaid, see programs accepting Medicaid.

Nebraska Medicaid does not require in-person contact for covered services. State law also requires it to pay for telehealth at least at the in-person rate. Medicare covers outpatient substance use treatment for people who are eligible; see Medicare rehab in Nebraska. Most private health plans must cover substance use care on terms comparable to medical care under the federal parity law.

People in Nebraska without insurance can ask their behavioral health region about publicly funded care. Listings for state-funded rehab and sliding-scale programs show providers that report these options. Each listing names the insurers a program reports accepting. Before starting, call both your plan and the admissions team to ask about coverage.

How can I check that an outpatient program in Nebraska is licensed?

The DHHS Division of Public Health Licensure Unit is the office to ask about a Nebraska provider’s license status. The unit issues Mental Health Substance Use Treatment Center licenses under the Health Care Facility Licensure Act and 175 NAC 18, and residential programs must hold one. Providers paid through the six behavioral health regions must also meet the standards in 206 NAC chapter 4.

Accreditation from the Joint Commission or CARF is another credential to look for, and a listing shows it when a provider reports it. RehabSeekers.com does not rank or recommend the programs it lists. Ask the admissions team directly about licenses and accreditation.

When is outpatient care not enough?

Outpatient care may not be enough in some situations, and a clinical assessment is the way to sort out which level fits. Those situations include withdrawal that could be medically risky, use that continues despite outpatient support, or a home that is not a safe place to recover. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be dangerous without medical support. Nebraska programs offering detox or residential rehab are listed separately.

Families in Nebraska worried about a young person’s behavior, including substance use, can call the Nebraska Family Helpline at (888) 866-8660, any hour. The state also lists the Rural Response Hotline at (800) 464-0258. For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988. Dial 211 for local services, or call the national treatment referral line.

Nebraska listings can be browsed by city on the Nebraska rehab page. For background on outpatient care in general, see the outpatient programs overview.
