Common questions about Alcohol Rehab, New York City

Answered from what is listed here.

Which New York City areas have alcohol rehabs?

Start by searching the neighborhoods where alcohol rehab listings in New York City cluster: Times Square, Gramercy Park, Harlem, East Harlem and the East Village, in that order of how often they appear.

Families comparing Harlem and East Harlem can weigh programs in both neighborhoods. Asking a program about its closest subway stop and its visiting hours is useful when relatives plan to come in person.

Rehab Centers in Harlem, New Yorkhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-york/new-york-ny/harlem-new-york/
Do alcohol rehabs in New York City take New York Medicaid?

Most of the alcohol rehabs in New York City record accepting New York Medicaid, so coverage is a reasonable first question for an admissions team. Have the member's Medicaid ID ready, and ask whether the specific level of care being considered is covered before intake is booked.

Treatment Centers in New York City That Accept New York Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-york/new-york-ny/new-york-medicaid-nyc/
Are there alcohol rehabs near the beach in New York City?

Within 25 miles of nearly all of the alcohol rehabs in New York City there is a beach, with a median of about 4.2 miles from listed facilities to the nearest one. Hazard Beach and Bloomer Beach top the most-named list.

A nearby beach says nothing about schedule, cost or level of care. Asking intake staff how often residents spend time outdoors gives a clearer picture of a typical day.

Rehab Centers Near Beacheshttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/beaches/

Is it safe to stop drinking without medical help in New York City?

Stopping drinking suddenly after heavy, long-term use can be medically dangerous, so anyone in New York City should get a clinical assessment first. Withdrawal can bring seizures, hallucinations or delirium, and the risk is hard to judge from the outside.

Intake staff use the assessment to choose between medically managed inpatient withdrawal, a residential setting, or outpatient withdrawal management with close follow-up. The New York City detox listings show where withdrawal management is offered. After withdrawal, prescribers can offer medications for alcohol use disorder such as naltrexone, acamprosate or disulfiram.

Call 911 for a seizure, confusion or someone who cannot stay awake. For a mental health crisis or one involving alcohol or drugs, call or text 988. The national treatment referral line can also point callers to local intake.

New York’s HOPEline, run by the state Office of Addiction Services and Supports, answers around the clock at 1-877-846-7369 or by text to HOPENY (467369). Since New York expanded Medicaid in 2014, many low-income adults qualify for state Medicaid coverage of alcohol treatment.

What alcohol treatment is listed in New York City?

New York City listings cover withdrawal management, residential stays, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, standard outpatient and telehealth. OASAS certifies addiction programs in the state, with residential rules in 14 NYCRR Part 820 and outpatient rules in Part 822. Outpatient programs in the city let people keep a work or school schedule. Under OASAS telehealth standards, some sessions can be held by phone when clinically appropriate and the patient agrees.

Medications for alcohol use disorder

Three medications are FDA-approved for alcohol use disorder: naltrexone, acamprosate and disulfiram. Naltrexone comes as a daily pill or a monthly injection. Acamprosate is taken by mouth several times a day, and disulfiram causes an unpleasant reaction if alcohol is consumed. A prescriber can start any of them in outpatient care. Ask the admissions team which medications the program prescribes.

Mutual-support groups meet across the five boroughs, including Alcoholics Anonymous, SMART Recovery and peer-run recovery community organizations. Some people use more than one alongside treatment. Programs built on the steps are grouped under 12-step rehab in New York City.

How do I pay for alcohol treatment in New York City?

New York State Medicaid covers alcohol treatment, and the state expanded Medicaid in 2014, so many adults with low incomes qualify. Managed care plans in the city include Healthfirst, Fidelis Care, MetroPlus Health and HIP of Greater New York. Some of these plans also run Health and Recovery Plans (HARPs). Medicaid-accepting listings are grouped by coverage.

People without coverage can ask OASAS-certified programs about funded care, or browse state-funded rehab in New York City. Medicare can cover alcohol treatment for adults 65 and older. The state’s posted downstate rate for the stabilization phase of residential treatment was $231.01 a day as of April 2023, for treatment only, with room and board billed separately.

When a court or DWI case is involved

New York courts may order alcohol screening or a formal assessment after an impaired driving charge, under Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1198-a. Whether a court orders one depends on the charge, the blood alcohol level and any prior convictions. OASAS approves the screening and assessment providers. Options appear under DUI and DWI programs in New York City.

Penal Law Section 220.78, the state’s 911 Good Samaritan law, protects a person who calls for help during an overdose, and the person overdosing, from certain possession charges, including under-21 alcohol possession. For alcohol programs across New York, see alcohol rehab in New York State, or browse every listing in New York City.
