Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in New York City

Intensive outpatient programs in New York City let a person with a substance use disorder live at home while attending structured treatment several days a week. Listings cluster around Gramercy Park and Times Square, with others in Harlem, East Harlem, Roosevelt Island and Tribeca, and draw people from Astoria, Woodside and Jersey City.

Every IOP listing here is in an urban setting. LaGuardia Airport is the nearest major airport for all of them, a median of 6.0 miles away. Entries come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and what providers report about themselves.

Common questions about IOP, New York City

Answered from what is listed here.

Which New York City areas have IOP programs?

Intensive outpatient treatment in New York City clusters around Gramercy Park, Times Square, Harlem, Roosevelt Island and East Harlem. Because intensive outpatient schedules mean returning to a clinic on a regular weekly timetable, a program near home, work or a dependable commute is often easier to keep attending.

Rehab Centers in Harlem, New Yorkhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-york/new-york-ny/harlem-new-york/
Do IOP programs in New York City take New York Medicaid?

New York Medicaid is recorded as accepted by most of the intensive outpatient programs in New York City, so members can usually find a listed option. Before starting, confirm with the admissions team that the program bills your specific Medicaid coverage and whether any prior authorization is needed first.

Members enrolled in a managed care plan should also check with the plan, since each one keeps its own provider network and may set its own rules for outpatient care.

Treatment Centers in New York City That Accept New York Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-york/new-york-ny/new-york-medicaid-nyc/
Are there IOP programs near the beach in New York City?

Listed facilities sit a median of about 4.9 miles from the nearest beach, and nearly all of the intensive outpatient programs in New York City have one within 25 miles. Among the most-named beaches are Hazard Beach and Bloomer Beach. For weekly sessions, the commute usually matters more than the beach.

Rehab Centers Near Beacheshttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/beaches/

What is an intensive outpatient program, and how many hours does it take?

An intensive outpatient program, or IOP, is scheduled addiction treatment of at least nine hours a week for adults while the person lives at home, and New York City programs follow the same floor. The ASAM Criteria, published by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, call this Level 2.1, placing standard outpatient care below nine hours and partial hospitalization (Level 2.5) at 20 or more.

In New York, the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports certifies outpatient programs under 14 NYCRR Part 822. A program may schedule more hours than the ASAM floor. Length is set by ongoing assessment rather than a fixed calendar, so ask intake staff how progress is reviewed.

Some New York City IOPs treat mental health only, so confirm that a program treats addiction before you enroll. Schedules vary as well, with daytime groups at some programs and evening tracks at others for people who work or care for family, and state telehealth standards allow remote sessions.

An assessment weighs withdrawal risk, health and support at home before IOP begins. Coming off alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids may be medically risky, so some people start with detox and step down. Coverage depends on the plan, so check with both the insurer and the program that IOP is covered and in network.

Day, evening and online IOP

Manhattan IOP schedules vary by listing. Some programs run daytime groups and others run evening tracks for people who work or care for family. OASAS Telehealth Standards, updated August 2023, let certified programs deliver services by video. They also allow services by phone when that is clinically appropriate and the patient consents. Programs offering remote sessions appear under telehealth rehab in New York City.

Is IOP the right level of care, or is detox or PHP needed first?

An assessment decides the right level of care. The assessment looks at withdrawal risk, physical and mental health, and support at home. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids can carry medical risk. A clinician may recommend starting with detox in New York City and stepping down to IOP afterward. A person who needs more daily structure may be referred to a partial hospitalization program first. Listings also note populations served, such as adolescents, women and veterans. In New York, Mental Hygiene Law Section 22.11 lets a physician treat a minor without parental consent in limited, documented situations.

Does New York State Medicaid or private insurance cover IOP?

Coverage depends on the plan, so ask both the insurer and the program whether IOP is covered and in network. New York State Medicaid is delivered largely through managed care plans and Health and Recovery Plans (HARPs). In the city these include MetroPlus Health Plan, Healthfirst PHSP and Fidelis Care, though plans vary by county. Medicare and private insurers set their own terms. People without coverage can look at state-funded rehab in New York City or Medicare-accepting programs. Listings also show accepted insurers and languages spoken.

Checking a license and getting help now

New York addiction programs need an operating certificate issued by OASAS under 14 NYCRR Part 810. Ask the admissions team for the certificate number and check it with OASAS. For support at any hour, call or text 988. You can also call the NYS HOPEline at 1-877-846-7369 or text HOPENY (467369).

Most IOP listings in the city sit a median of 3.1 miles from the nearest river, most often the Harlem River. For lower-intensity care, see outpatient rehab in New York City. For IOP across New York, see IOP in New York State, or return to all New York City treatment listings.
