Outpatient Rehab Centers in New York City

Outpatient care on this page means treatment for substance use in New York City, not physical therapy after an injury or surgery. Outpatient programs in the city are listed most often in Harlem, Times Square, Gramercy Park, East Harlem and Chinatown, with Mott Haven in the Bronx close behind. A weekly session can often fit around work, school or family.

Listings on RehabSeekers.com draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details providers send in themselves. Every outpatient listing sits within 25 miles of a river, most often the Harlem River, a median of 3 miles away. LaGuardia Airport is the nearest major airport for nearly all of them, a median of 5.2 miles off.

Common questions about Outpatient Rehab, New York City

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are outpatient rehabs in New York City?

Harlem leads the neighborhoods where outpatient rehab listings in New York City cluster, followed by Times Square, Gramercy Park, East Harlem and Mott Haven. Choosing a clinic close to home, work or school can make sessions easier to keep, since outpatient care means repeated visits each week rather than an overnight stay.

Rehab Centers in Harlem, New Yorkhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-york/new-york-ny/harlem-new-york/
Does New York Medicaid cover outpatient rehab in New York City?

Nearly all of the outpatient rehabs in New York City record accepting New York Medicaid, so coverage is commonly available across the city's outpatient programs. Members should ask the clinic to confirm their enrollment, and the plan it runs through, before a first appointment.

Members enrolled through a managed care plan should check that the program is in that plan's provider network, since coverage follows the plan the member holds.

Treatment Centers in New York City That Accept New York Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-york/new-york-ny/new-york-medicaid-nyc/
Are there outpatient rehabs near the beach in New York City?

Beaches lie a median of about 3.7 miles from outpatient rehabs in New York City, and nearly all of the outpatient rehabs in New York City have one within 25 miles. Hazard Beach and Bloomer Beach are most-named. Clients go home after sessions, so a beach is part of the neighborhood.

How many hours a week is outpatient care compared with IOP and PHP?

In New York City, as elsewhere, standard outpatient care for adults means fewer than nine hours of treatment a week under the level definitions of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Intensive outpatient (IOP) means nine hours or more, and partial hospitalization (PHP) means 20 hours or more. For adolescents, the intensive outpatient threshold starts at six hours.

In New York, outpatient programs work under New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports rules in 14 NYCRR Part 822 and need an operating certificate issued under Part 810. City listings may show intensive outpatient programs in NYC or partial hospitalization in NYC alongside weekly counseling.

The state office’s telehealth standards allow video sessions, and audio-only sessions when clinically appropriate and the patient consents. The telehealth listings for NYC show which programs offer remote care. Medications for opioid or alcohol use disorder can be part of outpatient care in the city, with buprenorphine and naltrexone prescribed in other outpatient settings.

Methadone is given only through opioid treatment programs certified under Part 822 with federal authorization, and those programs must admit pregnant women with opioid dependency on a priority basis. See methadone clinics in NYC. Under state law a physician can treat a minor without parental consent in limited situations, such as when parental involvement would harm treatment.

Does New York State Medicaid or private insurance pay for outpatient treatment in NYC?

New York State Medicaid can pay for outpatient substance use treatment, usually through a managed care plan such as Healthfirst, Fidelis Care or MetroPlus Health Plan. Several of these insurers also run Health and Recovery Plans (HARPs). Plan options vary by county, so ask the plan which programs are in its network, or see programs listing Medicaid. Medicare and private insurance can also cover outpatient care. Federal parity rules generally limit insurers from treating substance use care more restrictively than medical care. Each listing shows the payment types and insurers the program reports, including sliding-scale fees and state-funded options where a provider offers them.

When is outpatient care not enough?

Outpatient care may not be enough when withdrawal could be medically dangerous, when someone cannot stay safe between sessions, or when home life makes stopping very hard. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be serious, which is a good reason to get an assessment before choosing a level of care. Intake staff can recommend medically managed withdrawal in NYC or a residential stay first.

Looking up a program’s license and accreditation

New York outpatient programs need an OASAS operating certificate. Ask the admissions team for the certificate details and contact OASAS to look it up. Joint Commission or CARF accreditation is also worth asking about. A listing on RehabSeekers.com does not mean a program holds either one.

For urgent help, the NYS HOPEline answers around the clock at 1-877-846-7369, or text HOPENY (467369). You can also call or text 988, or dial 211 for local services. To compare outpatient care across New York, see outpatient rehab in New York State. For other kinds of treatment in the city, browse all New York City listings.
