Court Ordered Rehab Centers in North Dakota

North Dakota courts send people to treatment through several routes: a DUI sentence, a probation condition, a treatment court docket, or a civil commitment petition under state law. Each route sets its own terms, so the program you pick has to fit what the judge or supervising officer wrote in the order.

The listings here show North Dakota programs that accept court-ordered clients, with levels of care, payment options, accreditation and languages where providers have shared them. Our information comes from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details sent in by the providers themselves.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about Court Ordered Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which North Dakota cities have court ordered rehabs?

North Dakota court ordered rehab listings cluster around Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, Williston and Minot, in that order. Bismarck, Fargo and Grand Forks are also the larger cities nearby, so people in smaller towns often weigh travel to one of these hubs against any closer option a court will accept.

Rehab Centers in Bismarckhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/north-dakota/bismarck/
Can I use North Dakota Medicaid for court ordered rehab?

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, as the managed care organization for Medicaid Expansion members, handles their care benefits. Most of the court ordered rehab programs in North Dakota record accepting North Dakota Medicaid.

Members can ask the plan and the program's admissions team whether the court-required level of care is covered and whether prior approval is needed before the first scheduled session.

Are there court ordered rehabs near a river in North Dakota?

Rivers sit within 25 miles of most of the court ordered rehab programs in North Dakota, with a median of about 5.5 miles from listed facilities to the nearest one. The Heart River, the Maple River and the Red Lake River are the most-named rivers.

How does a court order someone into treatment in North Dakota?

A court in North Dakota can order someone into treatment as part of a criminal sentence or probation, through a treatment court, or through a separate civil commitment case. Each route has its own rules, and an order usually calls for an assessment before a level of care is set.

Under North Dakota Century Code section 39-08-01, every DUI sentence, at any offense level, includes an addiction evaluation by a licensed addiction treatment program, and the judge can order treatment when that evaluation shows a need. Our North Dakota DUI and DWI program listings cover that route.

Judges in other criminal cases can attach treatment to probation or pretrial release conditions. North Dakota’s treatment courts operate under the North Dakota Supreme Court, and each docket sets its own entry rules, so eligibility is not the same everywhere. Ask your defense attorney which dockets run in your judicial district and who they take.

Civil commitment is a different path: a civil matter with its own petitions and hearings, used when a person with a substance use disorder poses a serious risk of harm. Whichever route applies, a program sends attendance or progress reports to the court only after you sign a written consent.

Civil commitment is a separate route

North Dakota’s commitment law, NDCC chapter 25-03.1, covers a person requiring treatment. That definition includes someone with a substance use disorder who poses a serious risk of harm. A commitment case is a civil matter, not a criminal charge, and it has its own petitions and hearings.

Will a North Dakota court accept any licensed treatment program?

A North Dakota court won’t accept every program automatically, because the judge or supervising officer decides, and most orders call for a state-licensed program. The Behavioral Health Division of the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services licenses all substance use treatment programs under NDAC chapter 75-09.1 and NDCC chapter 50-31. The division also publishes a list of licensed addiction treatment programs, and the current edition is dated April 2026. Opioid treatment programs hold a separate license, and DUI seminar programs have a license type of their own.

Show the order to intake staff before you enroll, and ask your probation officer or the court coordinator whether the program meets its terms. RehabSeekers.com can’t say whether a court will accept a given program.

Getting reports to the court

Attendance and progress reports reach a North Dakota court or supervising officer only after you sign a written consent. Federal confidentiality rules (42 CFR Part 2) protect substance use treatment records, so a program can’t send reports without that consent. Ask the admissions team what the release covers, who receives the reports, and how often they go out.

What levels of care can a North Dakota court require?

A North Dakota treatment order usually requires an assessment first, then names a level of care and sometimes a minimum length, based on what the evaluation recommends. The table below shows how common order wording lines up with the levels of care in our listings.

Order wordingListing to look at
Medically supervised withdrawalDetox
Inpatient or residential treatmentResidential
Day treatmentPartial hospitalization
Intensive outpatientIOP
Outpatient counselingOutpatient

Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids can be medically serious, so detox belongs under medical supervision even when a court sets the start date. Medication for opioid use disorder is a question for your treatment court team, because we found no published North Dakota court rule on it. Opioid treatment programs in North Dakota are licensed through the State Opioid Treatment Authority within the Behavioral Health Division. Our North Dakota Suboxone clinic listings show where buprenorphine is offered.

How do you pay for court-ordered treatment in North Dakota?

Court-ordered treatment in North Dakota is paid for the same ways as other care: Medicaid, state-funded slots, sliding-scale fees or private insurance. North Dakota Medicaid expanded to adults on January 1, 2014, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota manages benefits for Medicaid Expansion members. Programs that take Medicaid say so on their listings.

The Behavioral Health Division uses federal block grant funds for treatment. That money supports state-funded rehab in North Dakota for people without coverage. Some providers offer sliding-scale fees based on income.

The state’s Recovery Housing Assistance Program pays up to 12 weeks of living expenses at participating recovery residences. Veterans can also ask the Fargo VA Medical Center about care. Who pays under a specific order depends on the case, so ask your attorney.

What happens if you miss sessions on a North Dakota treatment order?

A North Dakota judge decides what happens after missed sessions, and the response depends on the case, the order and the court. If travel, work or cost is getting in the way, tell your attorney or supervising officer early, before the program files its next report.

Distance is a real issue across North Dakota. Of the listed programs that take court-ordered clients, 72 percent sit in towns and 28 percent in rural areas. Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, Williston and Minot lead the list. Most of these programs, 86 percent, are within 25 miles of a river, most often the Heart River. Bismarck Municipal Airport is the most common nearest airport, a median of 4.7 miles away.

Recovery Talk, North Dakota’s free 24/7 peer support line, answers at (701) 291-7901. You can call or text 988 in a crisis, and the national treatment referral line is 1-800-662-4357.
