Treatment Centers in Rhode Island That Accept UnitedHealthcare

UnitedHealthcare pays for drug and alcohol rehab in Rhode Island through three routes: UnitedHealthcare Community Plan’s Medicaid plans, including UnitedHealthcare RIte Care and Rhody Health Partners, its Dual Special Needs Plans, and employer coverage. Optum Behavioral Health manages the substance use benefit on each, and Medicaid members pay no copay for covered behavioral care.

Listings on this page come from government treatment registers and Rhode Island licensing records, and each shows the program’s phone number, the levels of care offered and any accreditation. Filters narrow programs by city, setting and medication. Keep the UnitedHealthcare card handy when calling, since the plan name on it decides which rules apply.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Rehab in Rhode Island?

Yes. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan is one of three health plans in Rhode Island Medicaid, and its handbook lists detoxification, acute residential treatment, intensive outpatient care and methadone among covered services. Employer plans add a second route, and Optum Behavioral Health, a UnitedHealth Group sister company, manages the substance use benefit in both lines.

UnitedHealthcare’s Rhode Island Medicaid products are UnitedHealthcare RIte Care for families and children, Rhody Health Partners for adults 21 and older with disabilities, Rhody Health Partners ACA Adult Expansion for adults 19 to 64, and a plan for Children with Special Health Care Needs. Dual Special Needs Plans serve members with both Medicare and Medicaid.

How long has UnitedHealthcare served Rhode Island Medicaid?

UnitedHealthcare has held a Rhode Island Medicaid managed care contract since 1994. The state named UnitedHealthcare of New England a winner of a new five-year award in July 2024, then cancelled that procurement in February 2025 and extended the existing contracts with all three plans to June 30, 2026.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Inpatient Rehab in Rhode Island?

Yes. The Rhode Island Community Plan handbook lists acute inpatient care and acute residential treatment, and Rhode Island Medicaid’s waiver funds short-term residential and inpatient substance use stays in institutions for mental disease. Inpatient rehab programs and long-term rehab taking Medicaid both fall under Optum’s review.

How does Optum decide a residential stay in Rhode Island?

Optum Behavioral Health uses The ASAM Criteria for substance use disorder services in every state since November 13, 2021, unless state or contract rules override. Rhode Island is one of the states where Optum publishes separate state-specific clinical criteria, and the state requires ASAM-based placement for Medicaid substance use care.

Does UnitedHealthcare need prior authorization for rehab in Rhode Island?

Some services, yes. The Medicaid handbook says certain services need the provider to get permission from UnitedHealthcare Community Plan first and states no referral requirement for behavioral health. On one 2025 Choice Plus employer certificate, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient need prior authorization, as do scheduled out-of-network admissions.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Detox in Rhode Island?

Yes. Detoxification and observation or crisis stabilization are listed services in UnitedHealthcare’s Rhode Island Medicaid handbook, and the state’s substance use benefit covers medically supervised withdrawal management. Medical detox taking Medicaid and residential detox programs appear among the filters for both Medicaid and employer members.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Outpatient Rehab in Rhode Island?

Yes. The Rhode Island handbook lists partial hospital programs, day programs, intensive outpatient treatment and Assertive Community Treatment. On Community Plan pages for Rhode Island, required behavioral health care, including testing, behavioral therapy and medication, is covered in full with no copay, which includes intensive outpatient through Medicaid.

UnitedHealthcare Medicaid members in Rhode Island also get the Calm Health app at no cost and behavioral support through Optum’s liveandworkwell.com. Employer members can request teletherapy by phone or video, with coverage depending on the plan, and partial hospitalization with insurance appears on that 2025 Choice Plus certificate.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications in Rhode Island?

Yes. The Rhode Island Medicaid handbook lists community-based narcotic treatment and methadone, and the Community Plan pages include medication within required behavioral care at no copay. Optum Rx is the pharmacy benefit manager on the UnitedHealth Group side, while each employer plan’s drug list sets tiers.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover methadone in Rhode Island?

Yes. Methadone is a listed Rhode Island Medicaid service through community-based narcotic treatment, and methadone maintenance programs serve UnitedHealthcare dual plan members too, since Medicare covers methadone at enrolled opioid treatment programs and Medicare Advantage plans must match Original Medicare, which charges no copay for those services after the Part B deductible.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover Suboxone in Rhode Island?

Yes. On UnitedHealthcare’s national commercial drug list effective September 1, 2026, generic buprenorphine is Tier 1 and buprenorphine-naloxone film and tablets are Tier 2, each with a quantity limit and no prior authorization flag. Suboxone and buprenorphine through Medicaid falls under the no-copay Community Plan benefit.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover naltrexone and acamprosate?

Yes, on the national September 2026 commercial list: oral naltrexone is Tier 1 with a quantity limit, and acamprosate and disulfiram are Tier 1. Naltrexone treatment with insurance and naloxone nasal spray, also Tier 1, round out the medication options for Rhode Island employer members.

UnitedHealthcare Rehab Centers by the Ocean, on Greenwich Bay and Near Rhode Island Waterfalls

UnitedHealthcare’s Rhode Island Medicaid plans are offered in all five counties, so setting never limits plan choice for Community Plan members. Employer members follow their own network instead. Each listing shows how far a program sits from the coast, the bay or a river valley.

UnitedHealthcare rehab near Newport and Middletown beaches

Newport County’s Atlantic beaches stretch from Easton’s Beach in Newport to Second and Third beaches in Middletown. Rehab centers near beaches and Newport East treatment listings fall in a county where UnitedHealthcare’s Medicaid plans are offered, with Optum handling authorization.

UnitedHealthcare rehab on Greenwich Bay

Greenwich Bay forms the waterfront of Warwick and East Greenwich, opening into Narragansett Bay below Apponaug Cove. Treatment centers near bays and Apponaug recovery programs sit in Kent County, another county on UnitedHealthcare’s Rhode Island Medicaid service list, and Optum reviews residential requests there exactly as it does in Providence.

UnitedHealthcare rehab near Stepstone Falls and Pawtucket Falls

Stepstone Falls lies in the Arcadia woods of West Greenwich and Exeter, while Pawtucket Falls drops through the center of Pawtucket. Rehabs near waterfalls and Downtown Pawtucket rehab options take UnitedHealthcare RIte Care on the same no-copay terms as anywhere in the state.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts UnitedHealthcare in Rhode Island?

Browse the listings on this page first. Each program listing carries its phone number, levels of care and accreditation, and filters narrow results by city, setting and medication. Programs in other states appear on the rehabs that accept UnitedHealthcare page, and rehabs that accept Medicaid span every state plan.

Admission under UnitedHealthcare starts with the program asking Optum Behavioral Health for any authorization the plan needs. Medicaid members can call Optum around the clock at 1-800-435-7486 with benefit questions, and member services answers at 1-800-587-5187, TTY 711. The table shows UnitedHealthcare’s Medicaid offer by county.
