Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in South Dakota

An intensive outpatient program, or IOP, offers structured substance use treatment several days a week while you keep living at home. In South Dakota, IOP is listed in Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Madison, and also in smaller places such as Pierre, Huron and Hot Springs.

RehabSeekers.com builds these listings from government treatment registers, state licensing and accreditation records, accreditor listings, and information the providers send in themselves. Six in ten South Dakota IOP listings are in towns and four in ten are in rural areas. For many people, the drive to sessions matters as much as the schedule.

Common questions about IOP

Answered from what is listed here.

Which South Dakota cities have IOP programs?

Clustered first in Rapid City, then Sioux Falls, Madison, Hot Springs and Pierre, intensive outpatient listings in South Dakota sit in a mix of larger cities and smaller towns. Rapid City and Sioux Falls are the two biggest population centers where these programs appear on the directory.

Hot Springs and Pierre give people outside the two largest cities another option. Madison, in turn, is among the larger nearby towns where intensive outpatient schedules are listed.

Rehab Centers in Rapid Cityhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/south-dakota/rapid-city/
Is intensive outpatient treatment covered by South Dakota Medicaid?

No managed care plans take part in South Dakota Medicaid, so coverage for intensive outpatient treatment does not depend on choosing a plan, and most of the intensive outpatient programs in South Dakota record accepting it. Payment is fee-for-service under a primary care case management model.

Rehab Centers in South Dakota That Accept South Dakota Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/south-dakota/south-dakota-medicaid/
Which intensive outpatient programs in South Dakota are near mountains?

The nearest mountain feature lies a median of about 4.7 miles from listed intensive outpatient programs in South Dakota, and about half of the intensive outpatient programs in South Dakota have one within 25 miles. The most-named are Cactus Hills, the Seven Sisters Range and Verendrye Hill.

What is an intensive outpatient program for substance use in South Dakota?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) in South Dakota is a scheduled outpatient level of care for substance use disorder. Under Level 2.1 in The ASAM Criteria, third edition, from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, it runs at least 9 hours a week for adults and at least 6 hours for adolescents.

Sessions combine group counseling, individual counseling and education, and you go home between them. A common pattern is three sessions of roughly three hours each, and the number of weeks follows the assessment rather than a fixed calendar, with a move to standard outpatient care once the person and clinical team agree.

South Dakota accredits substance use disorder programs through the Office of Licensing and Accreditation in the Department of Social Services, under Administrative Rules of South Dakota Article 67:61. Ask each program how its weekly schedule fits those standards, and whether its intensive outpatient track treats addiction or mental health conditions only.

Intensive outpatient care fits people who are medically stable, safe at home between sessions and in need of more structure than weekly counseling. Because alcohol, benzodiazepine or opioid withdrawal can turn dangerous, a clinician may suggest withdrawal management first.

Level of careASAM levelAdult hours per weekSetting
Outpatient1Fewer than 9Clinic visits, home between
IOP2.19 or moreSeveral sessions a week, home between
PHP2.520 or moreMost of the day, home at night

The hours in the table come from the third edition of The ASAM Criteria. A newer edition updates these levels, so South Dakota programs may describe their schedules in different terms. Some IOPs treat mental health conditions only. When a listing uses the term, ask whether the program treats substance use. You can compare standard outpatient care in South Dakota and partial hospitalization programs in South Dakota.

How many hours a week does IOP take, and how long does it last?

Adults in IOP spend at least 9 hours a week in treatment, and the number of weeks depends on the assessment, not a fixed calendar. A common pattern is three sessions of about three hours each. The program reassesses you as you go and may move you to standard outpatient care when you and the clinical team agree you are ready.

South Dakota also supports Intensive Methamphetamine Treatment. This is a longer outpatient program that uses the Matrix Model for adults with moderate to severe methamphetamine use disorder. State-funded providers are in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Rapid City, Rosebud and Aberdeen. See meth treatment in South Dakota.

Is IOP the right level of care, or is PHP or residential needed?

IOP suits a person who is medically stable, can stay safe at home between sessions, and needs more structure than weekly counseling. An assessment is how that decision gets made. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids can be dangerous, so a clinician may recommend withdrawal management in South Dakota before IOP starts. If home is not a safe place to recover, the clinician may recommend residential care in South Dakota instead.

Under SDCL 34-20A-50, a minor with an alcohol or drug problem may apply to an accredited program for voluntary treatment, and so may a parent or guardian. Families can compare options on the teen treatment page.

Does South Dakota Medicaid or private insurance cover IOP?

South Dakota Medicaid pays for substance use disorder agency services, but you should ask each program whether it bills Medicaid for its IOP. The Department of Social Services runs the program, and coverage expanded to more adults on July 1, 2023. South Dakota Medicaid pays providers directly through primary care case management rather than through managed care plans, so you do not choose a plan. See programs that accept Medicaid.

If you have no coverage, the Division of Behavioral Health funds contracted providers. See state-funded treatment in South Dakota. If you have Medicare, ask intake staff whether the program bills Medicare for IOP, and compare options on the Medicare page. If you have private insurance, call your insurer to ask about IOP benefits and any prior authorization.

Veterans can ask about care at the VA in Sioux Falls, Fort Meade and Hot Springs, or browse veterans programs. Tribal members may also be served by the Indian Health Service Great Plains Area, which includes service units at Pine Ridge, Rosebud and Cheyenne River.

Can I attend IOP in the evenings or online in South Dakota?

Evening and daytime tracks differ from program to program. Check the format details in each listing and confirm the schedule with the admissions team. South Dakota Medicaid covers certain substance use disorder services by video. Audio-only sessions are covered only when you have no video access and the provider records the reason. See telehealth treatment in South Dakota.

Travel distances in South Dakota are measurable. For half of the IOP listings, the nearest airport is Sioux Falls Regional. For three in ten, it is Rapid City Regional. The median distance to the nearest airport is 8.2 miles. Sixty-five percent of the listings are within 25 miles of a river, most often the East Fork Vermillion River. Elevations range from 1,170 to 1,480 feet.

Checking a program’s accreditation

The Office of Licensing and Accreditation in the Department of Social Services publishes its accredited behavioral health providers on its public website. Search for the program by name before you enroll.

Help by phone or text

Calling 988 connects you, at any hour, to the South Dakota Resource Hotline, which the Helpline Center runs with the state. Care Coordination is available on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central. You can also text “opioid” to 898211. To browse every treatment type, start from the South Dakota treatment page.
